    Fear of Flying OCD

I can not fly without taking loads of Ativan. I am not good in elevators, on boats etc. Flying without Ativan is pure hell, I will literally wet myself with fear and have a full blown panic attack. It is so dangerous that I am scared that it is a danger to me and others on board and am afraid to attempt it again. the problem is flying alone or with my daughter when I need to be aware and not drugged up. I am also very treatment resistant and have to take as much as 10mg of Ativan for a 4 hour flight. Does anyone know of therapy for this? I love to travel but am always obsessing about the trip way in advance as I know how horrible the flight is going to be. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Re: Fear of Flying OCD

Since the problem is not wanting to do something (fly) rather than trying to stop doing some behavior, therapy should work well.
Basically, you approach the fear a little at a time, conquering it in stages.
Like, maybe you start by standing on a step stool in the kitchen for 10 minutes at a time.
Work up to one stop on an elevator.
Then flying, but not until you are okay with elevators to the top of a tall building.
Something like the observation room of the Sears Tower in Chicago would be good practice before actual flying.
Of course, this could take a long time.

    Re: Fear of Flying OCD

I am also terrified of flying and taking Ativan wouldn't help either because it is not just the getting there; I would be a complete mess the whole trip obsessing about having to get back on the plane to get home. My psychiatrist said there are very good programs for people out there who have a flying phobia for when I want to actually deal with the problem. Maybe you could check into it, it might help you.
