Please help. I don't know what else to do anymore.

I am a relatively healthy young woman. That was, until a few months ago. I have had so many symptoms since the beginning of this summer which are still ongoing. It all started the first week of June. I was going to sleep when the "lump" feeling appeared in the back of my throat, and I began getting short of breath. Naturally I was frightened, so I made a visit to the ER. Said everything looked fine, and was sent home.

Well, everything is not fine. A few days after that, I developed god awful gastro problems. Stomach pain, diarrhea, tons of mucus in stool. I visited a GI, who diagnosed me with post-viral IBS. That took almost a month to resolve. I still have mucus in my stool to this day, but the pain has gone.

The worst symptoms are all on the top-half of my body. I have this terrible heavy feeling in my head, the one you get with your everyday cold. I have a pressure in my ears that won't go away. My tongue feels swollen from the back down, even though there's no swelling at all. My whole throat is red, and I have sticky, thick mucus. It hurts my throat to swallow. My whole mouth is just a mess. My whole jaw and mouth feel tight, although from just viewing it, it looks fine.

I've seen several doctors. My general practitioner, gastroenterologist, otolaryngologist (ENT), and have been to the ER several times. They've done countless blood tests, urine tests, an EKG, all the basic tests. I had a CT scan with contrast done on my throat and abdomen. I've also had an endoscopy and a nasal endoscopy (not sure what it's called). Everything is fine. No one can figure out what's wrong. I have anxiety issues, but I can assure you, that I have never had these problems along with my anxiety in my entire life. I am just at a lose at what to do. I had taken birth control pills for a few years prior to this issue and only recently quit. I don't know if this has any relevance though. If anyone could shed any light on this, it would be much appreciated. I would never get sick before all this started, and if I did, it was a rare occurance. I feel terrible, and don't know what else to do at this point.

Re: Please help. I don't know what else to do anymore.

Oh toyaboo, I'm so sorry that happened to you! Please don't be frightened. This is annoying and interrupting your life, and it needs resolved, but it doesn't seem life-threatening, and from my 68 years on this sod, I believe you can get this figured out and resolved.

I wonder if you are possibly having an allergic or allergic like reaction to something, or if this is environmental in origin? We can go along with no allergy issues until one day they just start. That happened to me. I never had allergic reactions till this year. Where I live is normally a dry climate, but this whole year has been extremely wet, even flooding in the lower areas. There are native plants still blooming that normally bloom a very short time in very early spring then die off back, and all kinds of molds and fungi spores and plant pollens none of us are used to, as well as insects we don't normally notice so much here. So though I never had allergies or reactions in my life, now I feel like I can't swallow, feels like there is a lump at the back of my throat, and it affects my digestion and it's disturbing & exhausting. And I'm not one that likes to take allergy meds or any kind of pill.

Have you been seen by an allergist, or ear nose and throat specialist? I suggest that you always only see doctors that have more experience than 15-20 years. I now seek doctors that have 35 to 40 years of experience, as younger ones simply most often don't have enough life experience to have the knowledge to diagnose. You can look up doctors on the internet and get that info most of the time.

I suggest that you try to figure out what changed. Have you changed location, jobs, or meds or have started any different over the counter drugs or vitamins or food or anything at all that ordinarily you would think would not bother you? Because to me your symptoms seem like your body is reacting to something it's just not used to, and from that we can get secondary symptoms of infections. Some people just cannot digest certain foods without getting reactions. Try to keep track of what you ate or were doing when your symptoms became worse or better. You can start a food and symptom diary.

For your bowels it is harmless to take an over the counter probiotic daily, to help get the digestive system re-balanced with normal beneficial 'bacteria' needed to process food. Also, I suggest that you buy the over the counter vitamin called B 100 (NOT B Complex) and take it once a day in the morning (as B 100 can energize and keep you awake at night, so just take it in the morning). The natural color in B vitamins cause urine to be yellow and that's normal. B vitamins help the body recover from illness as it feeds the nerves.

How is your diet? One of my adult children never could handle grains or yeast or tomatoes, but she loves and is addicted to bread, and she has IBS and digestive issues from it, but never would stop eating bread or tomatoes. In her 40's now she is getting so many symptoms I think she is about ready to change her diet. Of course that's up to her, not me.

My (new for me) daily allergy symptoms of constant fullness in my face are difficult to handle. Let me know if you can see an allergist. One can get secondary infections from allergic symptoms that really are not considered to be a disease, and regular doctors seem to be stumped. You can try to see an allergist. Or a Naturopathic doctor.

No matter what, read up on everything yourself too, as doctors are educated, but still are just people trying things.

How are you doing right now?

Love,

Re: Please help. I don't know what else to do anymore.

Thanks for the reply YaYa. I do suffer from seasonal allergies, but I take an antihistamine daily for them. It has given me absolutely no relief from my current condition though. I've seen an ear, nose, and throat doctor, who told me it must be related to acid reflux, but I find that not to be the answer. For the last few days it's been giving me pain all on the left side of my face from the under part of my tongue, to the back of my throat, all the way to the left ear, and it just feels absolutely awful. I've also noticed several bumps in the back of my throat along with severe redness.

All that I can remember what I've done differently the day it started was eat a new food, which was menudo (Google will help you find out more if you have no idea what it is haha). It gave me no reaction gastro wise though, so I don't believe it caused this. And I've been taking an over the counter probiotic daily for the past few weeks as well, forgot to mention that.

I've been reading up on my symptoms, and all I can think of it being is a salivary gland infection, but I find that odd since I've had all these awful symptoms for at least 1-2 months now, since it should go away on its own. I'll be seeing my GP again this Tuesday to see if they'll send me to another specialist.

Thanks so much for your reply again. I've been doing not so well, due to the pain and pressure all on my upper-half. I'm just hoping I'll get a diagnosis soon as it's affecting daily life.

Re: Please help. I don't know what else to do anymore.

Dear toyaboo,

There are many normal body reactions that doctors cannot diagnose because they are just normal body functions, not a disease. To me the bumps indicate inflammation. I suspect your body may have been reacting to the spices in the menudo. This may have to just wear off as your immune system deals with it.

Some people can eat just about anything, but my body gets reactions, so I try to stay away from heavily spiced foods, esp. spices and herbs I am unfamiliar with. And yes, we can eat something with no problem then suddenly get a reaction. Spices can affect the glands in the mouth. That tells us we need to leave that particular substance alone. If something inflames the glands in the mouth it causes inflammation elsewhere and we may not feel it.

I take vitamin B 100 (not B complex) when my body seems out of whack like you described. B 100 feeds the nerves so they can relax. We don't get the B vitamins from food unless we eat whole raw grains and I don't know anyone who does eat raw grain. B vitamins have to work together so that's the reason to take the B 100, and not single B vitamins. In fact I'm out of B so I need to get to the store and get some.

Let me know how you are doing.

Re: Please help. I don't know what else to do anymore.

Did you get checked for strep throat? That's the only thing I can think of that makes the throat red with mucous. Its easy to get cultures in the mouth areas and see if their are any intruders.

You might try a holistic dr, there's a blood test for IgE (allergy ) and IgG (other immune) checks to see if you've made antibodies to pretty good cross section of foods. The other type of dr is a rheumatologist to check for autoimmune disorders.

Your immune system is probably worked up from the nasty virus you had and will take a while to calm down to normal.

A long time ago I had giardia a GI parasite. It took about 6 months to completely get back to normal, even had diabetes for a short time.

I hope you have been checked for mono, a common viral infection that can last for 2-3 months. It can also cause sinus infections which show up on sinus CT scan. I hope you get to the bottom of this. Not a fun summer to feel so bad.
