Unhappy I'm having severe chest pain

O.K. I just got out of the emergency room the doctor took chest x rays and found that I have pnemonia in both lungs. I have been having alot of back pain but now I'm having a really bad sharp pain under my left breast when I breathe or when I move. I've been having this for about 4 hours. Can chest xrays tell you if you have a pulmonary embolism or something serious I was a smoker for 17 years (I quit last year) and I also have asthma I have been on a nebulizer on and of for a year. should I call my doctor or wait? what are the symptoms of a PE please let me know.

    Hello
I am sorry to hear you sound quite sick. The back pain is in keeping with the pneumonia since the lungs take up quite a large area inside the chest.

Signs and symptoms of an embolism are ~sudden shortness of breath, either when you're active or at rest, ~chest pain that can feel like a heart attack (as well as the sweaty clammy feeling a heart attack will give) ~ rapid heart beat, ~ blood stained sputum on coughing.
Symptoms are not limited to that, nor may all of them be present. It is just a brief "overview".

I doubt very much if an x-ray would show an embolism when you already have pneumonia. It "normally" does not show it in every instance let alone when there are shadows there already .
There are some blood tests that can be done to determine the likelihood of a blood clot, though I do not know if the pneumonia would "cloud" results. Another way to check for an embolism is a pulmonary angiogram where dye is used to outline you lung. It's extremely unlikely that would be done while you are sick already.

You must have a reason to consider an embolism, but I would not rule out the strong possibility of pleurisy. It also typically causes sharp pain, almost always during the act of breathing and can come together with pneumonia. . The dr can hear the grating sound of the pleurisy (though again the pneumonia may well interfere with the sound).

Yes I would call your dr again since it is an added symptom and new development when you are already quite ill. I am sure he/she would like to know about it and it will set your mind at rest too.
It is possible that you need to go to hospital (for example) for observation.

I hope you get better soon. Make sure you get plenty of rest and lots of fluids.

It sounds to me like you have Pleuricy, an infection in the lining of the lungs. It is very painful, and feels almost like a heart attack. It is often brought on by pneumonia, and is something that shouldn't be left alone...

You poor thing...Since PE has been addressed, I want to focus on what's been happening with you since November. Only a doctor who examines you can distinguish if your back and chest pains are secondary to pneumonia or caused by something else. The Avonex you were taking is a broad spectrum drug that is also used to treat different types of uri, rti, pneumonia etc while the Sudal is not meant to treat chronic cases...Viral pneumonia may not respond to treatment. You most definitely need to follow up with your doctor & specialist-keeping them in the loop so you can be treated properly. If you were initially treated for sinus infection and it progressed to pneumonia it needs attention-you may need different treatment or stronger medication taken for a longer period, but the doctor makes the call but he has to know as things happen, week by week, month to month what is working and what isn't and if they want you to follow up do it. I gather, from November to present you have not been well from a respiratory standpoint. Have you been to a pulmonologist? Mention to the doctor the bout of swelling behind your head. Getting oxygen to your cells and ridding your body of infection is important. If the infection is not properly treated & controlled it can spread to other parts of the body.

You must be coughing a lot and in considerable pain. The first year is the hardest with smoking cessation because the lungs are working hard to clear in that first year. Severe bouts of coughing can cause the chest muscles to tighten...If you around second hand smoke at all- make a rule-no smoking indoors or anywhere around you. If you still smoke, your not helping yourself & could lead to COPD, emphysema...To quit is very hard to do and it was the best thing you could have done for yourself. Smokers have been known to smoke right through cancer...Don't be one of them.

A previous poster suggested you need help with the infection. Have you been tested for TB? Don't let this go, your respiratory system needs attention.

Vitamin C, fresh fruits & veggies (raw state or steamed). Limit intake of veggies that are higher in sugar like beets...Drink lots of fluids to help thin out secretions and so on. Fresh lemonade with mint leaf, Green Tea with honey, chamomile tea...To help congested sinus, congested nasal pathways-menthol vapors, euchalyptus... Ask the doctor if deep respirations of steam (steamed bath w/closed door) would help you sinus and lungs. You need to eat foods that build up and improve your immune system, to help you fight infection. It's a process and take time it's worth it. Small, gradual changes can make a big difference over time.
