    throat woes and more

Hi everyone, first off let me start by saying everyone is so wonderful and helpful on this board. Here's my problem. I've had tonsil stones in my throat, right side for two years. Pain always in my right tonsil since July 2002. So technically it has been almost two years with right sided throat pain. I do pick out the stones on ocassion, about 3 times a week with my finger (sorry to graphic). Now, i have been to the end about 9 times since July 2002. I have had 3 scopes (no biopsies as the ent says there is no strange tissue to biopsy), a neck ct and a neck x-ray. The ent does not want to take my tonsils out as he feels it is risky and I should live with this problem. I can eat, swallow, etc without pain, it's just that it is there most of the time.
My problem is that I am terrified I have throat cancer. I am going back to the ent on the 29th of this month to get him to check again. I have had the pain everytime I have seen him, do you think he would have seen something sinister? Do you think I would know after almost 2 years if it were throat cancer? I have heard that type of cancer is very aggressive, are there slow growing types too?

Anyway, thanks again for your time.

I don't think you have to worry about it being the big C. From what I understand it's a chronic infection of the tonsil that goes very deep. At least that's how MY ent explained it to me. Have you considered getting a second opinion or going elsewhere. When I first investigated having a tonsilectomy, I heard about a guy in Texas who does laser surgery on tonsils and people fly in from all over the country to have it done -- even go shopping that day. I had it done the old fashioned way and wish I'd had it done a LOT sooner.

If you really really want to have your tonsils out -- lay it on the line to your doc. Tell him you've tried everything and nothing helps and that you are willing to take the risks.

THank you so much for your reply. You really don't think it sounds like cancer?? What were your symptoms? I am going to talk seriously with my ent. A second opinion here wouldn't do much good I'm afraid, they all work together in the same office. Did you have pain with these stones? How old are you and do you smoke. I am 34 and smoke minimally (5-6 a day) and am in the process of quitting. I hate this stupid addiction.
    Anyway, thank you again.

    Re: throat woes and more

I never really had pain -- irritation, sometimes they'd bleed. I also got really really bad headaches, which I associated with sinus problems. If I had an especially bad headache, the next day my tonsils would be even grosser than usual.

I never smoked in my life. When I was little I had bout after bout of tonsilitis and my ENT said my tonsils were very scarred and full of infection. The infection was so deep that no amount of antibiotics would take care of it. Before I went to an ENT I was always told by the general practitioner that it was food caught in there.
