Unhappy Sick of being sick (tonsils?)

For the past year and a half , I've been getting sick a lot more often than usual. I guess it's somehow related to the other problems I've came across during this time period: panic disorder, depression, and subsequent IBS. I currently take Prozac which seems to alleviate my anxiety and depression (and the stomach upset as well), but like I said, I get sick a lot more often.

I've taken probably 15 or 20 courses of antibiotics during this time period, as opposed to the way things used to be--taking antibiotics maybe once a year. I've been to my family doctor, an ENT specialist, and an infectious disease specialist. I've had extensive bloodwork done. Immune system okay, thyroid okay, diet okay... everything seems to be okay. But I'm not okay. I'm sick of being sick!

And when I say "sick", I'm referring to a very unique collection of symptoms. I've only actually had a fever maybe 5 times during this time period which isn't great but it isn't unbearable either. My real complaint is my sinuses and my tonsils (I think):

    1) I have constant Post Nasal Drip--I can't remember the last time I went through the day without hocking up phlegm at least a handful of times. It often feels like there is mucus dripping down from my nose into my throat. Its color is usually a whitish/yellow. I've had sinusitis a few times over this time period. I think it's somehow inter-related with my Post Nasal Drip and my tonsil problems.

    2) My tonsils are way abnormal-looking and have all sorts of holes, craters, and scarring. Little white things get caught in them which smell terrible--I think they're called tonsil stones. Very often, one of my tonsils will become sore (either the right or left tonsil, but not both at the same time), at which point: it hurts to swallow, my phlegm darkens (yellow, green, brown, bloody even), and sometimes i experience malaise. (Like I said, normally this is NOT accompanied by a fever, and it DOES go away without antibiotic treatment. The last time I tried to treat this type of problem with antibiotics was when I was under the care of my ENT, who is not any good in my opinion. I wound up taking 2 courses of antibiotics to get rid of this tonsil soreness, with no success. Finally went to infectious disease specialist who instructed me to take NOTHING and I got better on my own fairly quickly.)

Here's a more current status update: About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I got a lot of canker sores after kissing some girl (I think she gave me Herpes or something). A little while after, I started getting really tired, fatigued, etc. Wound up with a fever. Took antibiotics for 5 days, fever went away. Today marks about 1 week from fully recovering from the fever/malaise. And already, my left tonsil is sore, I have a bad taste in my mouth, and I just feel like general ****. I don't have a fever, and I probably won't get one. I'll just feel like **** for a week or so, and it'll eventually clear up on its own. The doctors seem to think this is "okay". They don't want to give me a tonsillectomy unless I've had full blown tonsilitis like a million times in a row.

Someone told me that Prozac could be causing this type of problem, which is interesting because I didn't have any tonsil problems when I took a 5 month break from it starting August 2003--only a small cold and bronchitis once.

Someone else told me that my body has changed, and that it's just a phase I'm going through and it'll stop after a while. I just turned 20 years old... has anyone experienced something similar as a "phase"?

Someone else told me that it's because I have porous tonsils and that they need to shrink. (?)

The bottom line, however, is that no one and nothing is helping me. I don't want to be this way anymore. I want to go back to my normal sick-only-once-a-year self. I just don't know what to do anymore. I have no idea what is causing all of this.

    What can I do?

Re: Sick of being sick (tonsils?)

I think that we are going through the same thing, from the sounds of it.
I too have a strange tonsil problem. They are constanly infected. My ears hurt all time and have off and on sore throats. I too occasionally get a mild fever that comes and goes. Constantly congested. but have not have a sinus infection for quite awhile.
I have had numerous cultures on my throat, blood work, thyroid testing, blood sugar, liver tests. All come back normal. Antibiotics do nothing to get rid of the throat problem. I cant sleep at night, and am tired through out the day because of it.
And as you, things will get better for a week or two only to return and cause a week of suffering.
I have IBS, runs in my family, and have been on antidepressants in the past.

So i know where you are coming from, and i feel bad for you cause its no fun. Im 31 and wish that i never had tonsils, because i feel that they are at the root of my problem.
I think that you need to go to another ENT, heck i need to go to another ENT, but as of yesterday have lost insurance. SO when i get the insurance back ( my company stinks,,,,,,long story) i will be finding a new ENT, and will search for an ENT that will take them out.

Qualtiy of life should be considered when it is obvious what the problem is, tonsils are not working, nothing is helping them, take them out!!!!!

    Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for replying. It's relieving that I'm not the only one. I am going to talk to my doctor tomorrow. I'll post what she tells me.

    Hi.
I have about 90% of your symptoms.
First of all, I have constantly excessive phlegm, which worsens right after eating. Don't have a cough but I feel it dripping into my lungs very scary. All days long I find myself clearing my throat.
I think it must be related to my tonsils. They aren't extremely big but they look worser then the moon. Full of holes which are full of white foul smelling debris. I could live with them if I would get the white stuff once every so months but mine are every day full of that crap. Squeeze it out. 2 hourers later new ones are forming again already.
I also have a sore throat often too and a lump feeling in that tonsil. It often feels like the PND is coming out of that tonsil. But could be from squeezing too. My other tonsil isn't that bad but about once a week that one is full of white stuff too.
I also have often colored phlegm. Sometimes dark yellow/brown or bloody. Bloody often during the winters. Is your very sticky too and has it a foul odor?

I think it's all related to the tonsils. Should get them out better soon then late.
The person who says that tonsil stones are normal can get mine tonsils.
    All the best.

You hit the nail on the head -- this is exactly the way I feel.

And that's why I had mine removed four years ago at the age of 34. I haven't had sinus problems since. I'm not self-conscious about stinky tonsil breath. I'm not tired all the time. I don't get headaches anymore...

    Rat,

I've been spitting up tonsil stones for the last 5 months! Along with the horrible breath I have been feeling spaced out and dizzy! Did you have any symtoms like this? What was the recovery time for your tonsilectomy?

How long did you wait it out until you had surgery? My ENT is willing to remove my tonsils for me but I don't want to rush into surgery!

    Thanks.
