    Sick for 6 months

In March I had a kidney infection and sinusitis. I was treated for that and both were cleared up. I then began to have severe back pain and went through many tests including an MRI, CT Scan and x rays... determined I had scoliosis and have been receiving chiropractic care for that. They put me on Soma, Celebrex, Percocet and Oxazepam... I've been able to split my soma dosage in 1/3 and I stopped taking the percocet and oxazepam because I have been feeling better as far as the back pain. After a few weeks I developed a constant fever of around 102-103 and nausea with vomiting. I had another CT Scan, 2 nuclear gallium scans, about 30 different blood tests for lyme, lupus, rheumatoid, hiv, hepatitis, etc etc... all normal. They can't find a single thing wrong with me. I've been to 8 doctors... including an infectious disease specialist, 2 neurosurgeons, a kidney specialist, etc... The fever is now 3-4 times a week between 100 and 102... and the nausea is about 4 to 5 times a week, but i take promethazine, so I have only lost about 15lbs since this started... I'm also on lexapro now because i have PTSD, depression and anxiety... All I know is, I can't work, the doctors have given up and I am completely frustrated because my life has been stolen from me. Anyone have any ideas?

littlefoo, you can't give up and you must remember that you are responsible for your health. That may sound odd, but sometimes doctors are too busy to focus on "you". If you have an ailment that is readily obvious, sure they will cure you if they can. You must be persistant with doctors. If you make one mad, move on to the next until you find someone that is determined to stick with you and go all out to find your problem(s).
Many of the insect bites that cause West Nile virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, etc., cause fever. Most of them can lead to encephalitis, if not treated. Encephalitis causes fever, nausea, vomiting and other serious symptoms. I suspect though, that if you had this, you would have been hospitalized a while back.
Scoliosis can cause neurological problems, due to the spine pressing on the spinal cord.
EAT RIGHT, exercise all that you can, without hurting yourself. Even when you don't feel good, EXERCISE. It benefits the body in so many ways. I have a treadmill and it has saved my life.
I'm sure that it wouldn't surprise you to know that when doctors determine what your problem is, they still need prodding to keep you going. I have heart disease, and I have to do research myself, then talk to my cardiologist about knew meds and treatments. He is too busy to give me the attention that I need, in order to survive. He is the third cardio that I have used. I left each of the first two after seeing the same lack of involvement with my condition. They are used to treating lots of old people that have no questions, are very docile, and are not the least bit proactive in their treatment. Good luck in finding the cause of your bad health. Do not get discouraged

Hi LittleFoo. I am sorry you have been sick, I know it is frustrating trying to find out what is wrong.

I highly recommend that you be checked for Lyme disease. Lyme is a multi-system bacterial infection caused from the bite of an infected tick. It can cause many symptoms. It can be very difficult to diagnose because no test is completely reliable. From what I understand, the ELISA or titer is the one most doctors run first and it is the least reliable test. Many people who have Lyme go through many tests and doctors before getting diagnosed.

It is very important to see a Lyme knowledgeable doctor who can run more extensive tests and who will consider your entire history. Besides Lyme ticks can transmit several co-infections--Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis (HME & HGE), Bartonella, and Mycoplasma. Many people with Lyme are co-infected so it is important to be tested for these.

If you tell me where you live, I will tell you the name of the closest knowledgeable doctor to you that I know of. For more information on Lyme disease, see the "Lyme Disease Information" post on the Lyme board at this site.

    Keep searching--you will find answers.

    Re: Sick for 6 months

I appreciate both of your answers very much. I am glad that I found this message board and that there are people who understand what I am going through. My family has kind of taken the approach that I need to get over it or do something to make myself well. And most of my friends try to be understanding, but don't understand because I don't look sick to them. I hide it well.

I have been tested for Lyme disease, but I did not know that it could perhaps not be reliable. I will mention this to my doctor. I have a great PCP... she is doing all she can. We just don't know where to go from here.

I live in Maine, on the coast.

I have been trying to exercise. I have stretches that my chiropractor gave me that I do every day and I got a personal trainer who is trying to help me with core strengthening.

I found a great psychiatrist who has begun to help me immensely. So I'm getting there with some of my problems. It's just the fever and nauseau I don't know what to do.

Hi LittleFoo. I recommend that you get copies of your test results.

Ask your doctor to test you through IgeneX Lab in Palo Alto, CA. One of their tests is called the Western Blot. They are one of the best Lyme/tickborne labs in the country. You should be tested for the co-infections also. Ehrlichiosis can cause fever and nausea.

Have you been tested for any viral infections such as mononucleosis (mono). I have been sick for the past 7 months with mono. I have not vomited but I do feel sick through out the day. My back will ache, I get really bad headaches. What are all of your symptoms? If you want to know my symptoms, go to general health thread, and look for: anybody have this problem with ebv(mono)Help!. I know how you feel, when there is something wrong and the doctors give up on you. I was severely sick for 3 months befor they did a mono test on me. The only reason they did test me was because I asked the doctor if iit could be a virus.I really hope you find out whats making you sick, my prayers are with you.
