Struggling with Kidney Stones - PLEASE HELP ME

    This is a long story:
I went to the ER this past Monday due to severe pain in my back (left side) and groin area. It was worse than when I had my baby 4.5 months ago! They gave me morphine and did a CT scan, which revealed a kidney stone in the ureter, and another in the other kidney (not bothering me a this time). They sent me home with orders to strain the urine.

I threw up all night (I thought it was from the morphine). I was not really able to urinate because I hadn't been able to hold down any fluids.

I went back to the hospital at the urologist's request, where they did surgery to remove the stone. A stent was placed because my ureter was swollen shut.

The stent was removed two days later. Immediately following stent removal, I had the terrible pain again. I took some vicodin, which seemed to help A LOT. Went back to the doctor and he told me that part of the stone had broken off when he tried to remove it, and I am still trying to pass it.

That was two days ago. I am still in pain and taking the vicodin, which I think is making me feel yucky (I threw up this morning). I had another episode of terrible pain last night until the vicodin kicked in.

The doctor told me yesterday that if I don't pass this thing by Monday, they will do surgery again to remove. I am also scheduled for the shockwave therapy in a couple of weeks.

My question is - is there anything I can do to get this thing to pass? I don't want surgery again, and I hate feeling this way. I have a 4.5 month-old baby that I need to take care of and am really having a hard time. I am depressed and upset (and feeling kind of sorry for myself).

Also, there is blood in my urine still. And sometimes the strainer catches string or clot-like things (red in color).

Can anyone help me, please? I am really having a hard time with this.

Thank you so much for reading.

    Hi Yeltra.

I feel your pain! Last time I suffered renal colic was the beginning of January. Morphine wouldn't touch the pain, but the hospital gave me a wonderful painkiller for renal colic, called Voltarol (generic name, Diclofenac). It's an anti-spasmodic, so stops the painful contractions of the ureter, as it tries to pass the stone.

Did your urologist actually say that the stone is too big to pass naturally? If not, then, unless it's causing blockage and backflow to the kidney (they check for that in a blood test), then maybe there is still a chance you can pass this thing.
As you know, you have to drink, drink, drink, to flush it through.
But if the stone is big, then shockwave sounds like the best solution.

On 2 separate occasions, 2 different people have told me of an alternative way to pass stones. It's sounds too gross to me, so I never tried it...
For the first couple of days, drink a couple of gallons of raw apple juice. The following couple of days, drink a couple of gallons of olive oil. (I know, makes you want to puke, just the thought of it.) But the idea is that the acidic apple juice softens the stones and then the olive oil helps to pass them naturally, although maybe still a bit painfully.

    Keep drinking and good luck.

Hey, thank you so much for your reply.

The doctor did not say that the stone was too big to pass. in fact, the original stone was pretty small - 3mm, I think. And I am only trying to pass part of it right now.

I am feeling better, but the vicodin makes me feel kind of yucky. The pain is bad on and off.

Thanks again for your reply. It's nice to know that I am not alone.

HOw long did it take you to pass your stone(s)?

I will definitely mention that drug to my doctor. Are there side effects?

    Thanks!

Aww.. I can't see why you should be needing surgery for a stone so small. None of my stones have ever been more than 5mm and I've passed them all naturally, although painfully. lol
They say renal colic is the worst pain you can have and after my time in January, when I had it the worst, I agree with that. I had it for 3 weeks at that time! Not constant.. it came and went. 3 weeks of misery, pain and consuming so much water, I thought I'd drown.
I actually made a small error before... Voltarol is an anti-inflammatory. I also have another painkiller for renal colic, called Buscopan and that's the anti-spasmodic. Anyway, do a web search on them and see if you think they are for you. If you are breastfeeding, they may not be suitable.
Morphine is rubbish for that pain. It just made me feel icky.

Hope that helps some. Go and drink loads!! Every 30 mins, drink more!

My daughter found a way to "prevent" future kidney stones by drinking "distilled water" all the time. She lives in an area that has lots of lime in the water.

The source of your water may be causing your kidney stones.

Re: Struggling with Kidney Stones - PLEASE HELP ME

Thanks for the replies. I did pass my stone yesterday (well, one of them). So I am really happy about that!

I still have one in my other kidney, but that one is going to be "blasted" so that I won't be in so much pain, hopefully, when I pass it.

Thanks again for the replies! This was worse than the natural childbirth I had with my daughter!

Ahh.. bet you heaved a big sigh of relief. Congrats on the passing of your stone!
Maybe ask the urologist if there's any dietary changes you could make, to try and help prevent more from building up.

    Good luck!
