    cryptic tonsillitis?

i went to see an ent yesterday for breathing problems and he told me i have cryptic tonsillitis. i've had this since november.. he said there were 2 things we could do. one is to gargle salt water a rediculous amount of times a day for 6-8 weeks or remove my tonsils. he said to try the first one, then if it doesn't work to go onto removing my tonsils. i have tried gargling salt water, not to that extent although. i'm just wondering how likely this could work and if anyone else has had this. i'm going to wait about 4 weeks, i figure that is sufficent time to wait seeing as i have waited since november, all the while trying a bunch of antibiotics and penecillin and still it didn't get better at all. i'm just more frustrated by this then anything and want it over with. btw, what is this thing really??

    Re: cryptic tonsillitis?

you REALLY need to read about cryptic tonsillitis!!!!!!! I dont know why your ENT didnt tell you this...but it CAN be deadly.....BECAUSE it causes your tonsils to swell...and swell...and swell...which can either A) cause you to choke to death on food or B) cause your tonsils to swell up so bad that it blocks your airway.

I know this, because I had this...I nearly choked to death on a hamburger...after choking on many things, many, many times....(NO sore throats, no other symptoms...as this was early on in the "illness"..this was the thing that sent me running to the ENT. I had my tonsils removed.....no questions...no nothing...they HAD to come out! when he removed them....he said that the tonsils were sooo FULL of pus....that it was just a matter of time before it would have gotten out of hand.

Salt water is a waste of time.......get those tonsils out!!

    Re: cryptic tonsillitis?

ya.. i find that i'm coughing a lot because i can't get a decent breath of air in.. and that sometimes food doesn't go down so well. although i've never actually choaked on food itself. i have these white things on my tonsils. i've had about 6 i'd say in the past 2 weeks. one has been staying there the whole time, so i've had it a good 2 weeks now.. i can't get it out and i'm sure it's making my breath worse then it already is without it,i'm assuming the bad breath is caused by my tonsillitis. i managed to get the others out, took some time and lots gagging and near puking moments but i got them. this one is way too big and too deep to come out, i've only managed to get the tips off but it's still clearly visible. i think that in a few weeks i'll just go back and see him and tell him to remove the stupid things. i've had breathing problems for long enough and i feel like this is just prolonging it.

    Re: cryptic tonsillitis?

those sound like tonsil stones. regardless..it definitely sounds like your tonsils need to be removed before the problem(s) worsen. I was getting to where I choke on my own saliva. It was that bad! i was born with large tonsils....so that didnt help matters in the least when they started swelling. i was 31 when i had my tonsils removed..i am not certain how old you are...but i know they say its harder on adults. but, i didnt really suffer too awful bad. the main keys are....1) to CONSTANTLY keep your throat moist...keep that water bottle in your hand.....because once your throat gets dry....it WILL get sore. keeping it moist is VERY crucial. 2) pain meds--was supposed to take every 4 hours...but i took every 3-3 1/2 hours so that it would never have a chance to run out and cause pain to start!!!! 3).....most definitely...in case no one has ever told you.......narcotic pain meds...such as tylenol with codeine,....WILL most likely cause MAJOR constipation.....so before having surgery...you need to start yourself on high fiber liquids (like metamucil, etc) fiber pills, stool softeners. This was the ABSOLUTE worst part of having the surgery done (no one ever told me that pain meds would cause this!!!...I learned the hard way!!) good luck

    Re: cryptic tonsillitis?

i figured that's what they were. i choke on my saliva as well, and mucous stuff.. it's really nasty. i know that waiting won't make it better, it's liveable although, and getting back in with the ent will probably take an eternity so i'll just give it a little time although i think i'll most likely end up getting them removed. i have always had problems with sore throats since iwas very young. very prone to throat infections.. even in the summer time. it's a bit annoying. thanks for the info btw.. i did try looking it up online but all it told me was about puss being hidding in cripts in the tonsils.. something i already kind of knew lol..
