Hey all. I have a few questions about tonsils. I am 23 years old, and have had chronic infections in my throat for the last 7 years. I have had numerous problems, from throat irritations (turning into scarlett fever), bleeding tonsils, including large tonsils, and even more large when swollen!! I went to the Ears Nose and Throat doctor yesterday and they are coming out. Or atleast that is what he wants. I personally see it as a severe sore throat for two weeks or so, as opposed to a sore throats for the rest of my life. Oddly enough one of my biggest fears is people messing with my neck and throat. So this surgery is a really hard decision for me to make. My questions are about the actual surgery and the recovery. I have heard it's extremely painful afterwards. I have heard stories about blood and everything else. I was just interested in hearing what some people had to say about having their tonsils out and their recovery process and maybe a little about the actual procedure. How long was the recovery? I am working on scheduling a date for it. I was thinking as soon as school got out (I am a teacher) But 3 weeks after that I am going on vacation and I was concerned of not being ok to go by then. But at the same time I don't want to put it off, and then ruin the rest of my summer, including my summer job, which I won't be able to work if I get it done after my vacation! I know so complicated right?! If anyone has any insight on this fun fun surgery I would love to hear about it, whether they be horror stories or comforting stories anything will do!!

    Thanks so much!

    Re: Tonsils

I had my tonsils out at the age of 34. I took off two weeks from work. It's not fun recovery, but kept telling myself it's not like brain or heart surgery. It'll get better. I pretty much drank water and chewed on ice constantly for the first few days. Make sure you've got good pain meds. By about day 3 you'll probably lose your voice for a week or so. Food will taste awful for several weeks. Oh, and your ears will hurt really really bad about day 8. I lost about 10 pounds -- gained it all back when I started eating again.

First week you're waking up about every few hours. Your throat gets dried up, so drink lots of water whenever you can. I pretty much lounged in bed and dozed, read magazines, watched bad tv, dozed... But I really wish I'd had my tonsils yanked a LOT sooner. So if you have your tonsils out right away, you should be fine by the time you go on vacation. I think they suggest at least a two week time off from work, school, etc. because when the scabs start to fall off, you run the risk of bleeding. I never had bleeding problems. Just hurled a few hours after surgery from the morphine.

    Re: Tonsils

each person reacts differently. i had mine taken out when i was 31. wasnt that bad. there are a few tricks to keeping it that way. 1st and foremost......the pain meds will most likely be narcotics....they WILL constipate BEFORE surgery, go ahead and get started on LOTS of fiber.....get you something like the metamucil mix, take fiber tabs as well, and stool softeners. TRUST one told me that narcotic pain meds will constipate you!!! So please dont take this lightly!!! secondly.......the way i done it....i was taking tylenol w/codeine....dosage was every 4 hours...HOWEVER...I took it every 3-3.5 that its effectiveness would be constant!! Thirdly.....DRINK DRINK DRINK plenty of water....ALWAYS keep that water bottle in your hand!!! if you allow your throat to get dry....OH MY! It will KILL you to drink something once you allow it to get dry (say like when you are sleeping, and pain meds run out of effectiveness while you are asleep) have to FORCE yourself to get that water in that you can get your throat moistened again. I never lost my voice....the moments right after voice wasnt "normal"...i could only talk in a quiet mode...not a whisper, just not regular tone....but that didnt last but maybe a day or two. will not be able to eat solids for a couple of weeks, and they will have a different taste for a while. definitely no carbonated sodas!!! if you do drink will HAVE to be room temp....because cold carbonated drinks will BURN going down!!!!!

personally.......i dont think it was that big of a deal. bleeding???????????? only if there is a problem!!! i bled for about 2 minutes after waking from a nap the same day of the surgery (i was outpatient) the time hubby called the had stopped. the problem is IF it doesnt stop bleeding...then you will have to go to the doctors office..or ER.....there is a good chance that you will experience no bleeding at all.

i have a friend that SHOULD get her tonsils out...but she is matter what i say.........BECAUSE someone told her that she would bleed for about 2 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO not true!!!

if you are able to get the surgery done right after school ends..during the time you are should be up to par to going on your vacation. may not be able to eat the great foods yet....but energy wise, pain should be fine!
