Unhappy Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

I've had bad breath and post nasal drip for as long as I can remember. I regret waiting so long to take action and seek help from doctors. My life has been filled of frustration, anger and sadness. Im only 22 years old and i feel like im 60 . The only thing that seems to have helped me was Using the Aktiv K12 system of Dr. Katz. It doesnt work anymore. Im seeing an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist for my post nasal drip very soon and I hope to god that I can finally be free of bad breath for good.

Can anybody out there relate ??

My husband suffers from sinus drainage over night. It causes him bad breath. He does not really take anything for the post-nasal drip but he swears by Altoids (just one in the morning lasts him all day) for his breath.

Best of luck! Hopefully the specialist can find something to control it for you.

Re: Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

I had the most pessimistic appointment with my doctor about my post nasal drip today. He even told me that there might not be a way to cure it. Something inside me wanted to smack the heck out of him so badly for not giving me hope.

Im applying for health insurance really soon and hopefully it starts to kick in and I get my card right before I know it. My doctor reccomended that I should get x-rays at a hospital before I go see the ENT. I guess I will since my insurance will cover it. I cant wait !!

So sorry your appointment really did not give you any answers but I have confidence that the ENT will have them for you. X-rays are a good idea in case there is a deviation in your nasal structure that is causing the post-nasal drip.

Hang in there! Congratulations on getting insurance!

Let us know what they find out.

Thank you for your compliments. Not a doctor but a 51 year old lady with a lot of life experience. If I have not had it myself, seems husband, two daughters or son has had it. You learn a lot on the road of life.

Looking forward to hearing what they found!

Re: Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

Im still in the process of getting health insurance. It feels like its taking forever. I just feel that I needed to blog and vent about how this is taking over my life in every single aspect.

Its amazing how many emotions a person can hold in. I've held in so much grief, anger, love, compassion, tears, laughter all these years. All because of the way my breath smells. This truly feels like a nightmare that I cant wake up from.

I cant believe my own therapist told me that he never noticed a bad odor not even when I was really close to him in an elevator. I was seeing him for high anxiety levels I was experiencing. I brought the whole bad breath issue up because it was something that was causing the anxiety. I was on medication and they did not help. How could they help ??? What I need is something to get rid of my bad breath !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg i wanted to shout that at every therpaist and psychologist Ive seen for a very long time I have no history of hallucination and I am definitely not insane. I know when something stinks. I guess he thought lying to me would make me feel better.

The guy would hold his breath at times when I would talk. And he thought I didnt notice.

I know somewhere out there somebody is going through something similar.

I hope that they (we) find help. I really dont know what my future holds in regards to finding a solution. I can say that a force beyond me is what keeps me moving and being able to face people and go to work everyday.

Re: Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

    Hi One,

The PND is likely from LPR, the fumes of the stomach acids inflame the sinus membrane creating the mucus slipping down your throat, now this is a normal defense mechanism from the body against the stomach acids that they not suppose to go that high up. The tissue of the laringo-esophageal area is not equipped to handle the PH of the stomach acids and the mucus will create a barrier between the acid and the tissue.

The bad news...........BB.............perfect scenario for the anaerobic bacteria to overgrow and colonize the throat mouth and even the sinus. The bacteria will feed from the mucus proteins + food particles that get trapped in the thick mucus, degrading the proteins to amino-acids that later will release VSC's compounds.

It gets even worse when you eat or drink milk (everything related to it - specially "whey protein" very rich in cysteine (sulfur amino-acid) eggs, onions, garlic, peppers, coffee......and many more....all those foods are rich in the sulfur amino-acids, perfect food for the bacteria.

I haven't found a simple magic cure that will get rid of the problem, it's more like a multi-approach management strategy.........from rinsing your sinus with chlorine dioxide (add water), brushing your teeth with baking soda, using floss or water pick to really rinse the periodontal areas, scrap your tongue, massage it with hydro peroxide (tongue is the largest bacteria holder below the surface, white or yellow coating), rinse the whole mouth with chlorine dioxide (even swallow a little bit for your throat), get under control the GERD/LPR use PPI's (if severe consider having a Nissen Fundo surgery), Control the breathing (shut your mouth) whatever it takes shut it........the air is not supposed to come in or out of your mouth, it will create a condition of dry mouth or tongue with a very low oxygen environment on which bad bacteria colonies get empowered, make sure that your saliva flow is constant (drink plenty of water and close your mouth) mouth breathing alone can cause multiples issues, even if you constantly exhale from your mouth it will cause your sinus to start pumping mucus because the body thinks there is a major leak of carbon dioxide and it will try to stop it. If you sleep with your mouth open do whatever it takes to maintain it closed (tongue retainers or even tape it), loose weight if overweight, if you smoke quit immediately, careful, very careful with what you eat stay away from dairy foods, spicy foods, coffee, sugarsssss (bacteria thrives on sugars), control your swallowing do not swallow (air) more than twice per minute, it will make you burp and allow the fumes to come right up, give a chance to your saliva and your good bacteria do some work not swallow it right away (saliva rinses and provides oxygen to the friendly bacteria), the only dairy that I take is yogurt (friendly bacteria) but no sugar added no fat, a spoon of olive oil now and then (I don't understand very well how but it sucks the bacteria out of the tongue), If you still have tonsils flush them out, I use water pick and adapted the tip (made it wider) to drop the water pressure since the tonsil tissues are slightly more delicate, tonsils are a breeding ground for bacteria too, and they also might create tonsil stones, flush them every day, .................................So stop being depressed and miserable and start working right away, military discipline.......and may be just maybe.........it will be controlled to a point that you will regain your confidence.

Re: Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

    Hi One,

Boot Camp?........well I consider it an actual war with a worthy enemy capable of overpower your whole life..............extremely dangerous opponent

I have 2 dentists, 2 gastroenterologist, 1 gastro surgeon, 1 ent, 1 general practitioner......so far none of them can put it together. It's a multi-approach (multiple flanks) + I've been in a "breath clinic" which turn out to be just a dentist with the "Halimeter" he obviously had no idea of interpreting the results, he could only confirm that I have BB....(I can do that by just reading people gestures). I'm currently looking for a microbiologist Phd.

Aktiv K12....originally from New Zeland's BLIS Technologies....... I agree with the Harvard and the New Zeland's research is all about the anaerobic bacteria overgrowth, but the key is to find the underlying condition causing it. The Streptococcus Salivarius / Thermophilus is the good bacteria that keeps the balance, apparently not found in those suffering with BB. I'm currently taken it everyday.....still testing, but no that brand (way too expensive) your local GNC shop has a more powerful blend called "Natural Brand Chewable acidophilus" for a fraction of the cost. In fact even the yogurt has higher concentrations of S.Thermophilus / Salivarius. The only little problem is that has milk (that's how the lab is able to culture the S.Salivarius), and for me milk is a killer (lactose intolerant) induces excessive belching.

I'm even going beyond......please don't try it yet....I'm still testing it..... this a secret special commando attack...........first water pick irrigation (medium pressure) with a touch of Hydro Peroxide for gums teeth and tonsils, then brush w/ baking soda, then chlorine dioxide blast rinse...gargle too, a coat of Neosporyn topical triple anti-biotic (OTC) over the tongue wait a couple of hours to sniff out any bacteria standing.......and then 4.5 Billion probiotic chewable friendly bacteria....... now that's war...............

Do you have post nasal drip ?? cause all that wont do any good til you get rid of whats causing the source of food to the bacteria ?

I remember the first day i didn't have BB I couldnt spit out any mucous at all !! i dunno *** happened a week later that it came back. Wow there should be a site dedicated to ppl like us. To Find a cure that is.... I really advise you to go to Dr. katz's website....

Re: Post Nasal Drip/Chronic Bad Breath

Oh !!!! one more thing. If you purchase any of Dr. Katz's products they come with a mini "Bad Breath Bible." it tells you what causes bad breath, how to prevent it etc.

Good luck in all that you do.

And good lord that's a lot of doctors !!!! What the hell are they doing that they cant find a solution ?? wow.

I really strongly urge you to get the aktiv k12 starter kit from the Dr. Katz website. it can be the answer to your prayers !!!

    Hi One,

I'm glad you finally find what works for you......a week ago you sounded pretty frustrated. I 'm doing great with my management strategy (little cheaper). I've noted that the thread has over 600 hits, and increasing in about 100 a day. I'm hoping the info we posted here will really help somebody out there.
