How can you know it is rheumatoid arthritis? This is an autoimmune disease..have you had blood work?

Osteoarthritis is very similar, but is not autoimmune. Your appointment is in 2 weeks, try not to worry; you can discuss with your doctor then.

Have you tried any OTC meds - Aleve, etc.? Did they help? And yes, blood work will determine which it is. Are you seeing a rheumatologist?

Sounds like you are having a rough time and waiting this long in pain is difficult. I would first call the Dr office and see if they can move your appointment up, perhaps someone else has cancelled. In the meantime, if you can take Naproxen (generic Aleve) twice a day that may help some. A diagnosis is based on your physical exam, xrays., blood tests and is a process that can take some time and lots of patience. I hope you are seeing a rheumatologist coming up. They should do several blood tests to check for various conditions that cause pain and swelling in joints. RA does not always show up on the blood tests, especially when it first begins. Any family history of autoimmune diseases is important to relay to your Dr. Rest of the painful, swollen joints, as well as ice packs off and on can help calm down the inflammation. Regardless of what is going on, there should be treatments that will help you get out of pain, feel better and be more functional. Let us know how things go.
