Unhappy Hesitant to schedule pttd surgery

I am a 64 year old who has been referred for pttd surgery for level 4 pttd. My orthotics and Arizona brace do not manage my dysfunction. My surgeon is an ankle/foot orthopedic specialist. He will operate on the left foot first and later schedule surgery for the right foot. Is anyone able to encourage this grandmother wanting to remain active?

Re: Hesitant to schedule pttd surgery

ive tried several times to post this...Ill try again!

I had my surgery june 2012... would I do it again?? yes.... Thank the Lord..I dont have to have it on the left foot. Since it was my right... its a life changer. I am a very active mother of a 7 yr old. I am relatively young for this proceedure (40) I have a very physically demanding job in healthcare.. so I knew what i was getting into before. The dr told me it would be more painful than anything else ive experienced...
It affects your lifestyle....things to prepare for.... when NWB you can get a Knee walker/scooter so you can "scoot" to make mobility easier. These are not always paid by insurance but worth the cost of rental so you can feel a little more useful. May have to purchase shower chair, hand held shower to make bathing easier. While you have a cast you will need to get a cast bag... most healthcare places have them. They are a heavy plastic that will stretch over your cast to allow for showering. Mine never leaked.
I couldnt drive for 9 weeks.... I planned this for the summer so I wouldnt have to get help with my daughter as much (im a single mom)

If you do have the to your anesteologist about possible of the 3 day nerve block (Q ball) They offered it to me after I mentioned wanting something more than a normal block. It lasts 3 days... fed by catheter they leave in just above knee on back side of leg. it slowly releases medication to the area around the nerve to provide pain relief... mine leaked...catheter cracked...and had to remove it on day 2 but worth it... (you remove it yourself...doesnt require another visit)

Recovery is a year or so.... so its not like instant satisfaction... Nothing is fast enough for me so im still dealing with that too!!

If you can handle the recovery...the end result is supposed to be worth it... Just be informed on what to expect. It takes a dedicated person to follow the rules...

hope it helped a little....

Re: Hesitant to schedule pttd surgery

Thanks for the encouragement. I will certainly request the Q ball and secure the cast wrap for showers.
I notice you are in the B'ham area. Did you use Hurowitz at St Vincent's?
I will pray for your quick recovery.
