osteopenia and steroid injections?
I'm 43 years old, and otherwise in good health.

I have a herniated disk at L5-S1 with horrible sciatica and I've had one epidural steroid injection which helped tremendously with the pain. Since then, I've had a diagnosis of Osteopenia with a T-score of -1.9.

I wanted some input on whether another steroid injection is inadvisable, now that it is known I have Osteopenia? Any help would be appreciated.

Also, since it looks like surgery may be unavoidable, in light of the Osteopenia, is the microdiskectomy a better idea, or the more serious removal and fusion? Thank you.

Re: osteopenia and steroid injections?
Those are great questions, but they are probably more than us "amateurs" here can answer - it's a good idea to get the opinion of a couple doctors though! I'm sorry about your diagnosis, and I hope you work out a good treatment plan that helps you improve your bones.

Re: osteopenia and steroid injections?
HI there,
Thanks for your post. I have been trying to find a doctor to prescribe something like that for me. The doctor who ordered the bone density test is out on indefinite leave for family reasons. The Ortho I saw said he can't write the 'scrip, and the Physiatrist who did my steroid injection said he can't. So, I'm waiting to see an Internist on Dec. 23 (first available appointment as of 12/8) and I should be able to get a prescription at that time.

Thanks again, Angel
