    Forteo Side Effects (new user)

    Hello to all -
I've just had my first injection of Forteo today. Almost immediately after the injection I felt light headed, sort of disconnected from my surroundings, but that subsided in about an hour. After two hours - I started to feel terribly ill - very, very sick to my stomach. That too subsided after a while (with crackers and 7up).

Is this normal? Should I expect this everyday? I was told about leg cramps being a side effect and that the cramping is a temporary side effect. I'm wondering if the nausea is a temporary side effect as well.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Hi,
I hope your side effects are temporary also. I was so afraid that I would get dizzy after the injection but I didn't. The first week or so I did my inject while laying down just in case. Once in a great while I feel sort of nauseated but I'm not sure it's even caused by the Forteo. What activity are you doing right after the injection? Forteo raises the calcium level or keeps the calcium level in your blood high enough for bone to grow. If your blood calcium gets too high it can make you feel sick to your stomach. That's what my specialist told me. He also said that if that happens he would just adjust the amount the calcium supplements I was taking along with the Forteo until we got it correct. The information says that the medication takes about 30 minutes to completely absorb and about 4 hours before it goes out of your system. I don't kinow if I need to but I don't take the bulk of my calcium supplements within the first 4 hours. It might not make any difference but I just have the idea that my calcium level might get too high. There's plenty of time in the day to get in all the calcium in divided doses. Let us know how your next injection goes.

Thank you for the reply and for the information. So far so good this morning! I'll hold off taking the calcium supplement until this afternoon. Yesterday I took it within an hour of the injection. I'll keep you posted!

On a more personal note, I'm so thankful for this healthboard and to everyone who shares their experiences, thoughts and feelings. I no longer feel alone with this disease. It is empowering to be able to reach out and discuss treatments and issues with people who are going through the same experience.

Wishing all of you abundant health.

Re: Forteo Side Effects (new user)

I have been on Forteo for almost two months now. Fortunately, I have had no side effects from it so far. I understand that the side effects you are having are not uncommon but usually go away after you're on the medication for a little while. I was concerned about leg cramps since I am somewhat prone to them anyway, but I haven't had any problem with that that I can attribute to the Forteo. When I started on Forteo I injected it in the evening just before bedtime just in case I did feel lightheaded or nauseous. I have continued with that routine since it seems to be a little more convenient for me. I hope your side effects diminish soon and that the Forteo works for you and for all of us.
    Take care.

    Calcium supplement and Forteo

    Newbones,
Out of curiousity, when do you take your calcium supplement? Per Taape's message, I have held off taking my calcium supplement (normally taken each morning) and I've not felt terribly ill today. All in all, I feel pretty good. I may try taking the injection at night too - it may fit into my routine more easily as well.

Yes, I hope the Forteo works for all us. Have a good day.

The literature from Lilly says that most side effects are mild and include dizziness and leg cramps. It says, "If you become lightheaded or have fast heartbeats after your injection, sit or lie down until you feel better. If you do not feel better, call you health care provider before continuing treatment."

It also says, "Contact your health care provider if you have continuing nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy or muscle weakness. These may be signs there is too much calcium in your blood."

My doctor sent me for a blood and urine test within a week of starting Forteo to make sure it didn't spike my calcium. He also told be if I felt queasy or like my brain was blurry, that I probably would need the Forteo adjusted to less frequent doses. Anyway, nothing like that happened, and I sometimes take a calcium supplement right around the time I take the injection, which I do at night.

My doctor also wanted me to repeat blood and urine tests after 3 months on Forteo. I am just at that point, and will have the tests done next week. I believe he will be able to tell from these tests something about my bone metabolism and whether the Forteo is working, but believe me, I can't understand how. I'll certainly keep everyone posted if I learn what he can tell from the tests.

Best of luck to you with the Forteo. I brought my husband with me to the doctor's office for the first shot because I was worried that I'd feel faint. So far, I've had no bad reaction to it that I can tell. I hope the upset stomach passes as you adjust to the drug.

Re: Forteo Side Effects (new user)

I am a 52 yr old male on Forteo. I had been using miacalcin, but my Dr. did not think I was getting good results. I cannot take the other types of drugs because of a hiatial(sp?) hernia.

I had been on it for about 8 days until I started having a bad reaction. Since I started, I had joint and muscle pains for a couple of hours after injection. For the entire time, i felt weak and tired, with no energy. On the last night I vomited and then broke out with hives all over my body. I have been off of the medicine for two days. Due to the holiday weekend, I have not been able to contact my Dr.

I don't know if we will take me off of Forteo altoghether, or adjust the dose. Anyone else with these symptoms?

Re: Forteo Side Effects (new user)

The cancer risk was found in the trials with mice. Mice bones grow throughout their entire life. Human bone plates close sometime in our late teens or very early adulthood. It was at these growth plate areas that the mice cancers occurred. In addition the mice were on the drug from birth or w/in a few days of birth their entire life span. The mice were also on much higher doses than would be the equivalent in humans. Forteo is only recommended for use for 24 months because that was the longest of the clinical trials. After searching on the net and reading the clinical trial results and research, frankly, the cancer risk was a lesser worry to me than the possibility of bone aches, etc.

I'm have been on Forteo for three months now. If it makes you feel any better, my doctor told me that it was tested on larger animals like monkeys and dogs and there was no increased cancer risk. He told me the same thing about the rat bones and dosage that CrohnieToo told you - rat bones are different from human bones. I decided to take the risk and hopefully stave off deterioration of my spine. It's something everyone has to decide for themselves. I find it comforting to read the posts of all of the others here who are using it. We are all in this together and we keep each other informed of all new research and information we come up with. So far, I've had no discernable side effects. I was a real needlephobe but have managed to do this with a minimum of fear and loathing.

I have been on Forteo for almost 3 months now..I had the lightheadedness for the first two weeks with the leg cramps, then it subsided..Now I have problems with swelling in the abdomen and pain in my back. Is anyone else having this..I am only 4ft.9inches tall, and am beginning to feel like an acordian. I contacted Eli Lilly and they say this is not a symptom of Forteo

    BelindaG,
Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been away for the past three weeks. I usually take a calcium supplement in the morning and again at lunchtime. Taking the Forteo injection at night seems to be working well for me. I've finally gotten pretty comfortable with it and overcome my needle phobia somewhat. Take care.

I have been on Forteo for about 8 months now with no side affects. When I read all your post I feel very fortunate. I will be going for my dexa scan in October. I'm hoping to see a differance.

I have been on Forteo for 2 days now. Believe me it is a miracle drug compared to the others I've tried! Just took calcium supplements and exercised for 10 years and my bone mass got steadily worse. The Doctor put me on Actinel and then Fosomax. Both gave me terrible side effects. I get absolutely no side effects from Forteo and hope to get good results for a change with my next bone density test. It's a little inconvenient but the daily injections don't hurt a bit and it's supposed to be the only drug that actually BUILDS bone in the spine where I am especially deficit. Would highly reccomend it to all us menopausal mommas!!

    Menopaulsalmomma,
I agree with you - the inconvenience of the injections is way better than having a burnt out stomach from Fosamax or Actonel. You'll get used to the injections like everyone else. After 10 months the skin on my belly area is not broken down as I envisioned. But the question remains - why can't medication in pill form be developed that doesn't cause major stomach problems.
