Osteoporosis Death from impact?

I hesitate to post this question but I am at my wits end.

This year (2011) my wife passed away, I was laid off from my job and evicted from my home.

Now my 13 year old son and I are living with my mom and my brother.

My brother and I have NEVER gotten along in my 47 years. He (53 yrs old) has debilitating rheumatoid arthritis and advanced osteoporosis.

I try to avoid him and any confrontations but today he became angry with my son for something and in the argument he began hitting me repeatedly.

My years in the EMS field help me maintain calm in face of such situations, but I did ball up my fist for the first time. (this is NOT the first time he has hit me).

YES, I know we need to get out of my mothers house. YES, I know all the usual "avoidance" advice.

My question is this:
If, in the event he is yet again hitting me repeatedly...and I can no longer contain my will power NOT to defend myself against his attacks....considering his advanced osteoporosis, could a hit by me be fatal?

I am wanting to show this question to my mother and to him in hopes it will affect his actions and make him think prior to becoming violent again.

Any advice regarding the medical condition and the risks would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Osteoporosis Death from impact?

Hi Kevin, welcome to the board. Sorry to hear that you and your son have had such a rough year. I don't know if hitting him would be fatal, but it could fracture whatever bone that takes the blow, but then again he could fracture a bone hitting you. Since you are only seeking advice about the medical aspect of hitting, that is all i can come up with. Have either of you thought about talking to someone to help deal with the stress and issues you are both experiencing? Good luck, hopefully 2012 be a better year for all of you. take care...phyllis
