    A better state than Florida?

I am about to the end of the rope here with getting help for chronic pain, tiredness, and nearly everything else. I am 65 and on Medicare. Part of the problem is that I live in Florida and this is a very nasty state when it comes to pain management. Over the past six months, I have seen 4 doctors, in just trying to find a primary type physician. One of the doctors went into concierge medicine ($1600 a year, plus a copay for each visit), three other doctors joined the practice and all left within three months, and left their patients high and dry. I was referred to a practice which practices adult medicine and told them my problems. They immediately referred me to another specialist. I went to see this specialist, made an appointment, and guess what, they referred me to another specialist, this time a pain specialist. I have xrays to prove the pain in my hands, elbows, and feet. All I asked for is relief for when the pain gets a little bit more than I can handle. I need my hands. I have tried everything from codeine to the usual nsaids with no luck. Many generics just don't work and Medicare drug plans don't want to cover name brands. He would not even give me a cortisone shot in my foot, and he would not prescribe a low dose of morphine which I know WILL work. I have been through EVERYTHING else and nothing works but that. He would not do a thing, except you guessed it, referred me to another specialist for physical therapy in my hands. The cartilage is gone at the base of my thumb, all I want is relief from the pain but he said he can't give me anything until I've visited the rehab specialist. All this is absolutely wearing me down. And all these specialists want to order up expensive tests to put me through and farm me out to another specialist. If I pass the sleep test for example, they get $5,000 and I get absolutely nothing and still fight tiredness. I'm also fighting depression because I am getting nowhere except being sent in circles to see this one, that one, do this test, that test. So the pain specialist won't give me the shot in my foot until my next appointment. Of course not, that's more money for him and I get to go through more agony until then. And of course in Florida, it's hard to see a rehab doctor because they are full. So it's more waiting and waiting and waiting.

Here is the crux of all of this. I want to know if there is any other state that you know of where I don't have to go through all this to get some help. I am being sent from doctor to doctor to doctor to doctor and getting no help whatsoever. Florida really is a terrible state is you are in chronic pain. I'm tired of living with the pain. It's dragging me down, tiring me out, and I'm sick and tired of the runaround with doctors. Please, I am willing to move to get out of this ridiculous loop and get some help. There has to be a more liberal state to live in, one that will help someone in chronic pain without having to send them to hell first. Please help me find it.

Hi Sher and thank you for sharing with us. I would tell each and every doctor/specialist/et al, what you just told us. Additionally, you seem to already have been tested for things so I would definitely bring/provide the evidence to the appropriate people and tell them that a) you are sorry, but you don't have the money to keep paying for referrals/appointments, b) you've already been diagnosed with your conditions and you will show them prove, c) X medicine you took before helped you manage better, and d) whatever they are referring you to didn't help. Maybe find a medical advocate in your area to assist you.

Re: A better state than Florida?

I have no diseases or anything like that, but I am suffering from a lot of pain, one from a previous accident where I dislocated my elbow, the cartilage at the base of my thumbs is gone so it's bone on bone, and there is pain at the top of my left foot. I have suffered with all of these for years. Finally I went to a pain specialist to see if he could give me a low dose of morphine for the days I can't manage it. And I'm stuck in the same loop I can't get out of. They all have gotten paid for their appointments and I am still without nothing. He tried to push me off on celebrex, lyrica, neurontin, motrin, aleve, naproxin, aspirin, soma, muscle relaxers, feldene, lidocaine patches, and all the crap that does nothing. Been there done that with hydrocodone, oxycodone, tramadol, voltaren gen and NONE WORK which is why I went there. Voltaren gel is ridiculously expensive and absolutely does not work which is why my drug plan doesn't cover it. I'm not going to spend money on something that doesn't work and don't want to have to go around that loop again either. Either I have a tolerance to them all or the generics are absolutely useless. The leadership in Florida has made sure that opioid medications are next to impossible to get and I am just worn out from suffering and being sent from one specialist to another. I feel like I'm playing musical specialists. So now I have to go see about occupational rehab in my hands. What the heck is that going to do. I just want something THAT WORKS that will get the edge off the pain before I go nuts. I used to live in the Wash, DC area and they were just as bad, because the daughter of one of the former governor and a famous radio addict made sure that those who need it can't be trusted. Kaiser Permanente is the absolute worst place to go because they don't even believe in pain management. I am terrified to go through surgery because one slip up and my hands are useless. I also have a horrible fear of being put to sleep. I think it's awful that there are medications that do work but doctors are so terrified of the DEA especially in Florida, but they will gladly take your money and give you crap.

I've discussed all these damn expensive tests but have to play their games to be sure they get as much money as they can while I get nothing except sent to another specialist. Please, there have to be other states, or maybe countries not far from here. Are there any doctors left that are willing to help you or is this the new normal, to see as many specialists and have as many tests as possible before you can get medication that works? I would prefer to live in a state that borders an ocean or Canada or Mexico. Possibly Colorado.
