I must too add my two penneth! I have never ever heard of this drug being given for short term relief, only for long term pain, You usually have to be titerated up, Plus my freind if you are addicted i would be really careful as at the moment you have become addicted on a really very small dose of oxycontin, Look what it could do to you if they up it slightly OMG!

    take care.

After so much pain, the new meds did make me feel great, because it was the first real pain relief in 3 years. I wouldn't say I was addicted, but I knew that a long acting opiate is what I needed. After the 1st 10 day supply I met with PM Dr. again and he put me on a 30 day supply. I don't know if it's the same situation, but it could be. Actually over the years I have received a 1 week supply of Duragesic, Oxycontin & Kadian. Dr's understand that these are very expensive. Good luck either way
I have to agree with this post. My PCP made me suffer for several months, refusing to prescribe anything stronger than Lorocet. My Ortho switched me to Percocet, which provided very minimual, but noticiable releif. My first PM Dr. gave me a script for 3 Duragesic patches, after realizing that the percocet wasnt cutting it for me. My new PM Dr. started me on a 10 day supply of Oxycontin, just as a trial because it costs so much. After that 10 day trial, he did up my dosage and wrote me for 30 days at a time. We are still titrating my dose because we have been waiting to see what the ESI's will do. I am on OC 20mg 2x per day, with Lorocet+ for breakthru. Problem is, I dont have breakthru. I try to convince my Dr. that I need 3x per day dosing, as the OC only lasts 7-8 hours for me. I got real good releif for 7-8 hrs.the first month and a half I was on the 20mg dose. I became more active and in turn my pain increased. My choices are as I see it, an increased doseing and strength as well as frequency, or become less active again, cut back on my working hours and my family activites. I dont want to do either now that I realize that it is possible to have my life back. (I know I got off topic, sorry.)

2003 February- Orthopeadic Spinal Surgeon said not a candidate for surgery,Percocet 5/325 every 6 hrs.
2003 June-1 month at PM clinic, Percocet 7.5/325 every 4 hrs.
08JULY2003-Had Discogram, comfirmed pain comming from L4-L5 disc.Followup confirms tear at L4/L5, leaking and pushing on a nerve.
JULY2003-Duragesic patch, had allergic reaction, switched to Norco. Norco provides no releif. Dr. wants me to have IDET. NOPE!!
14AUG2003- New PM Dr. switched me to Oxycontin, 20mg/2x a day.
Lorocet+ 2x per day, no releif. Need 3x/day Oxycontin, or ESI's to start to help.
EMG says severe nerve irritation in lower back. Shows legs ok.
06SEPT03-Severe butt/leg/foot pain, suddenly while driveing, feels like constant electrial shock, I am worried about symptom change.
    Sept.12,2003-ESI, no releif.
    Oct.6,2003-ESI, no releif.
Oct.20,2003-Caudal epidural steroid injection. Provided @ 20% reduction in back pain. Nuccloplasty suggested by Dr. if Caudal fails.
Surgery is NOT an option at this time, due to meds working good (better with 3x/day doseing), long recovery time, possible failure/ need to have surgery again in a few years due to DDD.

Re: How long before addicted to Oxy?

    Hi SHMIGELZ,
I am a person with chronic pain and I have just been prescribed Oxycontin and even before my Doctor gave me a script she warned me that this is a long term use medication. I don't understand why your Doctor would only prescribe it to you for 10 days, it does not make sense. I sympathize with you about your pain. Have you been to see a specialist for the injury to see if something can be done other than taking pain meds? I am just curious. I am from Toronto Canada and I have been dealing with specialists and regular Doctors for a very long time now and one thing that I have come to realize is that there are a lot of Doctor's out there that either don't care and will give you anything or there are doctor's that you really have to make them listen to you. Their workload is so heavy now with our declining health care system so it is hard to find a good Doc. My advice to you is to find another Doctor that will actually help you. Take care and good luck.

I must say from my only experience, that I was very happy with the way it worked. I also have IBS so alot of meds mess my my stomach too...

Why do people get addicted to it?? Is it because of the high it gives you??? Also if its such a controlled substance how does some of the people on this board get a hold of so many?????

    Just curious thats all.

    Thanks.
