    pregabalin (Lyrica) or gabapentin (Neurontin)

Hi all. I saw my Pain Doctor for the 1st time on Wednesday and he's suggested a whole bunch of "tools" to keep my pain manageable. One that I'd like advice on is whether to take Lyrica or Neurotin. He said it's up to me and he explained the simple differences. Mainly this is that Neurotin needs to be tappered up and then tappered down, whereas Lyrica can be take to different levels depending on apperent daily needs etc. He also explained the Neurotin is a tried and tested drug, whereas Lyrica is new and hence I'd be a type of Guinee Pig......

My pain is likely Neuropathic, arising in the pathways of the diaphragm and abdominal wall.

So I'm very interested in hearing about peoples good and bad experiences on these drugs. If you have the time to relate and give me your opinion I would appreaciate it.

    Thanks

    Blasterboy

    Hi Blasterboy

I am really curious as to how you go this pain?
I have pain in my left diaphragm and thru my left shoulder back which is neuropathic. I got it after getting my gall bladder removed and had numerous ops such as laparotomy after and feeding tubes
For a lon while they though pancreatitis caused by this now who knows.

I recentky started gabaopentin and have titrated up to 2700 mg a day.I havent heard of the other drug, I am in New Zealand.
I found no side effects it does help me sleep at night which is good.
    talk to you soon

    Hi Debs

My pain sounds similar to yours. It also refers to my left shoulder tip and I got it after laproscopic surgery to cure my cronic reflux problem.

Re: pregabalin (Lyrica) or gabapentin (Neurontin)

    I started Lyrica on Thursday!

My insurance STILL hasn't approved it after 2 weeks of waiting, but I asked my dr. if he had any samples that he could start me on just to see if it was going to work anyway. So, he did! He gavae me 3 MONTHS WORTH! So, Thursday I started taking it. Talk about side effects! I get VERY tired, VERY dizzy (which I JUST got under control with medication for my POTS), some tightness in my chest with a dull ache, and swollen ankles. Oh...and it causes loss of concentration!

Something happened at work too that I cannot fully explain but think I can attribute it to the med. I was sitting in my chair at work, then I just don't remember ANYTHING - it all went blank. I am not sure if I passed out, fell asleep or what. I was turn away from anyone who walked into my cube. All of a sudden I hear "Lisa? Lisa?" A girl I work with is calling my name - and I totally jerked out of whatever is was that happened. I totall apologized and told her I was on some new meds, but didn't know what just happended. She said that she called my name a few other times, and she said my hand was moving on my mouse, so she wasn't sure why I didn't hear her or answer her. So, it was VERY odd. Nothing like that has happen since. Before this happened (or course) I had already called my doc about the chest stuff to see if that was a side effect (I knew about the others).

He said instead of taking it twice a day, only take it at night for the next week until my body adjusts to the meds. I am taking 50 mg at night, on Thursday I increase to twice a day. Then after 45 days, I increase to 75 mg twice a day. My dr. said that it will take about 2 weeks before we will really know if it is going to work or not.

I took Neurontin, but the side effects were so bad I had to go off it (I literally couldn't keep my eyes open, I had stomach pains, dizzy, etc.) I had to taper on to it and unfortunately, had to taper off. I wish I could have just stopped. It really wasn't doing too much either, although I started to taper off at about 3 weeks of being on it.

The Lyrica is supposed to be a "cousin" of Neurontin, not that I know exactly what that means. But so far, I can at least withstand the medication.

Good luck and let us know what you decide!

    ~Lisa

    Hi Blaster

Its interesting my surgery was also laprascopic and mine also radiates to my shoulder blade.I am sure the laprascopic surgery caused my pain
How long ago was your surgery? and did your pain problems start straight after?
Mine was 6 1/2 years ago,and they are doing nerve blocks to locate teh pain source.
I am now using ketamine which gives me some relief

    cheers

    Hi Torley

Certainly is something that many people have suffered since lapro surgery. I saw a pain specialist about it last week and he told me my pain might drag on for a few years and I was gutted!!!!!!!! I only had the surgery 6 months ago and have tried to be optomistic, but the pain seems to be becoming more and more persistent, why is this, any idea???

What I have noticed is the entery scar (that is left of the middle and where the main pain is localised) is a much longer than any of the other 4 and so I presume that the surgeon did most of his manouvering with the instrument put in there!

My pain started right after surgery although it become more obvious about 6 weeks after (when all other pains had healed) and it has got gradually worse. Did you have such a progression? Please tell me more about your situation. I hope I don't ever need Ketamin for this! Has your pain always been that bad?

Look forward to hearing back from you Torley.

    Hi Blaster
ye smy pain started immediately after surgery I cam to recoverey I was screaming
My pain for gB was on right my pain now is on left.
I do think the surgery caused all my problems
after that they did to sphincterotomies via ercp and then I couldnt eat ice so much pain, vomiting and i coudlnt lie down. i was admitted for a month
then they did a laparotomy and placed a feedint tube in I have had 4 of these.
I then had my splanchnic nerves severed, aand that didnt work. I have been on morhine for 6 years, they say it is not effective for me so now the ketamine which does have some effect.
there has been not one day that i have not had this pain.
I hope your pain gets better

    Blasterboy

they can do trigger point injections eg blocks to release scar tissue which may cause you pain,it mat be worth a look at some of these blocks. especially if you can localise the pain.
I have great difficulty pointing to exactly where inside my pain is. I cant as its too deep. If i could then maybe they could localise it

its good talking to you dont be put off that I am have different pain to you we all are here cos we have pain.

Thanks for that Torley. Sometimes I feel in awe of the pain some people suffer like yourself and I feel that I shouldn't be posting here. But as you said we all have pain and I've learnt that this is very relative in so much as the affect it has on our life. I've learnt so much from people on these boards. Stuff that my GP would never have the time or aptitude to explain, so that perspective it helps to read and post.

Re: pregabalin (Lyrica) or gabapentin (Neurontin)

They are both very similar but I am hearing that Lyrica is better than Neurontin. But both are weight gainers . Which with Neurontin I gained 70 lbs , so I dont want either on. A friend of mine just started On Lyrica and as far as her burning pain in her back it relieved it almost instantly. She said she felt a little hyper and couldnt sleep well the first night but got better as the week progressed . She is a thin lady so the weight gain is not a problem with her. So some good feed back and some not so good. I am on Topamax and doing well . Everyone system is so different so what might work for one may not work for another.

Re: pregabalin (Lyrica) or gabapentin (Neurontin)

I've started Gabapentin last week and am getting on with it very well so far. Titrated up to 1200mg a day and heading for 1800 by next week. I haven't had much in the way of side effects accept a false sense of securty in the 1st few days and a little foggy minded, I can hadnle that and it seems to be passing; also I had some awful spasms in my pain area on day three; they were real seering level 8 type hits, passed quickly but have knocked my confidence, I'm a little worried about it happening in public or whilst driving. I wasn't though sure if this is from the Gaba or from having my Tens machine too hight, any opinions on that?
