    Pain management doctor/Physiatrist??

Is there a difference b/t a Physiatrist and pain management doctor?

My doctor told me to see a pain management doctor, then his resident wrote me a script for a physiatrist. This is for postopertive pain. (spianl fusion)

It's good to see both. Actually where I used to live, they psychiatrist helped more medication wise (with anti-epileptics as I have nerve pain) than the pain mgmt doc did.

Actually, a physiatrist is different from a psychiatrist. The physiatrist is a doctor of rehabilitation medicine (the physical angle). The psychiatrist is a doctor for mental issues (depression, etc.). Pain management doctors are generally anesthesiologists who specialize in long term pain management. Some are also physiatrists, though. Sounds as if a physiatrist would be what you would want for post-operative pain and rehabilitation. Hopefully, you are not a candidate for long-term pain management. :-)
