    Stop meds before colonoscopy?

I have to go under general anesthesia every year for my colonoscopy...had cancer 6 years ago. Now I am on 120 mgs, day/oxycodone and I am worried about my upcoming colonoscopy. It's bad enough using the gallon prep w/o going thru wd's too. I know I must inform anesthesiologist...but the night before and following am...can I take my dose. My Dr. hasn't given me a straight answer. Just wondered if anyone had experience with this. Thank you.S

    Re: Stop meds before colonoscopy?

I did some research on this, because I saw so many people being told by there docs to stop their meds before procedures, such as surgery. These people were told that they would not be able to sedate them, or control their pain. This caused many to go through painful withdrawal symptoms. I found articles from the American Academy of Pharmacology. They state that peri-operative, or procedure tapering is NOT necessary, and should not be done because they take an oath to "do no harm." They say that anesthesioloist may have to get more creative, but that tapering can actually have negative effects with anesthesia, due to messing with your chemistry. They say that withdrawal is painful, and is not necessary. Make sure that your doctor understands that you WILL NOT settle for pain during your procedure because he did not educate himself, or consult with a specialist of anesthesia. They can, and should find a way to sedate you, and keep you comfortable. DO NOT LET ANYONE TALK YOU INTO A PAINFUL PROCEDURE, USING THE EXCUSE OF OPIOD TOLERANCE! It is just that, an EXCUSE!

    Dear Butrfligirl28,

My Mom had a colonoscopy less than a week ago, and the doctor told her to take her MSContin and her Percocet. They did have to use some extra anesthesia.

I must tell you that she was never fully asleep, but she had no pain during the procedure. She said that she could simply feel slight pressure while this truly enjoyable procedure went on.

Let us know what you do!

    Sincerely,
    Jon (Conductor)

Sharonn: I had lung surgery four years ago and I was on Fentanyl (Duragesic) patch at the time. I told them before hand and they didn't ask me to withdraw from it. They even changed it for me when I was in ICU after the surgery. I had additional pain meds as well, Morphine and Dilaudid.

I have had two Colonoscopy procedures while on Methadone. I think the last one was about a year ago and they were aware I take Methadone for CP, but I took my meds as I normally do with no problem. Again, just make sure everyone knows you take Oxycodone and how much.

Don't worry, take your normal meds. Just make sure the doc knows you took them and how much.

Thank you for all your responses. If anything, I would think they would use LESS anesthesia as to not alter your respiration too much. S

Is your oxycodone an extended release version? The gallon lavage prep will wash extended release medications through your colon too quickly for you to get your usual benefit from them. In fact, that same prep is used as a remedy for overdoses of time released medications in emergency rooms! You may wish to discuss this potential problem with your doctor as there are ways to make sure you are comfortable before, during and after the procedure.

    Re: Stop meds before colonoscopy?

Hi Sharonn: I hadn't thought of that, Laenini has an excellent point. If you're taking Oxycontin or one of the generics like it, you'll have to use some short acting meds or something else to block the withdrawals. If you'll be under a general, talk with the doctors and have them give you something you can take before hand.

You won't be under that long, so maybe you can take your med (Oxycodone) just before going in, but that still doesn't answer the question about what to do while you're drinking GoLytly junk the night before. You need to talk with the doctor and get something lined up.

    Re: Stop meds before colonoscopy?

For my last colonoscopy I was told not to take my pain meds the day of the scope. The reason they gave me was so that I didn't end up with too much medication in me. I didn't have any problems with withdrawals at all.

But did you undergo general anesthesia ?Most do not...they get versed(twilight) a combo of demerol and valium. My Dr. makes me go under because I wasn;t falling asleep and could still feel the pain. I am trying to at least taper down my dose before. Thanks...Sharonn

    Re: Stop meds before colonoscopy?

Sharonn: I have had many colonoscopys and two of them they did at the hospital, so I could be put under, with a general. The others were done in the doctor's suite in his office (they get more $$$ this way) and had the Twilight (Versed) because there wasn't an Anesthesiologist there during the procedure. I have probably had six or seven procedures over the past 10 years and never once was I asked or told to cut back or stop my pain medications.

The last two I had were just about a year ago and I am on Methadone now. The doctor knew before hand and he said nothing about not taking my meds. In fact the instructions included the fact you could take your normal medication with a small amount of water.

Like I said before, I had a major operation, which was lung surgery, and I had a 100 umg patch on through the procedure. I spent four days in ICU afterwards, and they medicated me on top of the pain patch and even changed the patch for me the second day I was in ICU.

I think it probably comes down to the doctor and what they are comfortable with. Do you have yours done in a hospital?

    Re: Stop meds before colonoscopy?

Ummmm......apparently Canada (or maybe my city or province) is the last place on Earth that uses NO anesthetic during colonoscopies. I had one done in September, with nothing at all except a sedative that did not a thing, and I was awake, alert, and conscious throughout the whole, horrible experience.

I took my Percocet the night before, and in the morning before the procedure. I don't even think I told them, just did it. LOL

I had a traumatic experience though, because I FELT EVERYTHING. The scope going in, complete with a pain like someone's ripping your guts out, literally. I screamed through the whole thing, and told them I wasn't sedated enough. When they IGNORED ME, I tried to jump off the table. Twice. Then after the procedure was done, I DEMANDED SOMETHING for the horrid pains......and they would offer me not a thing. So I signed their stupid forms and checked out against their advice (you're supposed to stay for an hour afterwards) and left to go home where I knew I could at least take my Percocets. I was traumatized though....had nightmares of me screaming for a while, and even awoke in pain somethimes. Now, I'm okay.

So in answer to your question, I think you can take you regular medicines, I did anyways, and had no problem.
