Pain Relief for Intense Sciatica Pain

    Hi,

I've been having (what I'm pretty sure is) sciatica of my left leg for 3 weeks now. The pain is so shocking and burning and it's pretty much constant and travels down into my ankle. I've also had muscle twitching all along the entire path of the pain, i've had almost my entire foot go numb, pins & needles in my calf and down into my toes. I've also had some pins & needles in my rear. Of course it hurts while sitting and I have to walk with my leg bent a little at the knee because any straightening of my leg causes intense pain. I cannot even lay down at night in any position and have been lucky to get about 2 hours total sleep per night. I had a script for percocet, which deadens the pill a wee bit. I just told my doc that I cant go on like this without getting sleep as it's really wearing me down. He gave me a different script for Vicoprofen (vicoden with ibuprofen) and he also gives me injections of an anaesthetic into my rear. These injections do absolutely nothing for my nerve pain and I told him that. And even the painkillers arent enough to keep the pain away while trying to sleep. Is there anything else out there that may help more with this nerve pain?

Hi Baybreeze, there are two medications that I know of for nerve pain which is Neurontin and Lyrica. I suffer from RSD(Reflex Sympathetic Dystropy) which involes a lot of nerve pain. I take Neurontin for it, some people prefer Lyrica. Neurontin has been around for sometime now and Lyrica is new on the market and is more expensive. I know how it feels when your leg burns, my hands, feet and neck used to burn like that. Also the pain is out of the world without medication and then sometimes I have bad flare-ups anyway. I have heard of a medicine that some call Topamax ( I believe the spelling is correct). I do hope you're able to find some relief soon.

i have sciatica pain on and off as well and my dr. gave me samples of lyrica. it worked wonderful for that nerve pain but unfortunetly i could not take it becuse it did a number on my vision. i am glaucoma suspect and i literally could not focus after 3 days on it. luckily it has not flaired in awhile so...maybe you can mention this to your dr. and ask them about a free months sample. it really works great.

wow, morgyporgy....your condition sounds just like mine....severe pain down right leg...right foot numb...drop foot...have to drive with left foot....my pain is from DDD and its progression....duragesic patches, oxycontin, roxycodone..all these will help....I have or am currently on all/some of these...they worked for my pain.....it doesn't take all the pain away in my leg & foot, but makes it tolerable.....hope I helped ya ! heating pads help with my leg pain too ! I feel for you...I will have this pain for the rest of my life...have had 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions....nothing anyone can do....no cure...just keep taking my meds.....and totally inactive....literally !

Hi I can totally relate to the pain that you are experiencing. Are you on a med for nerve pain? You can take all the pain pills in the world and they wont touch the nerve pain. Ask md for neurontin or lyrica. I am now taking lyrica 150 mg 2x day. I hope you feel better soon.

You said you think it's nerve pain and it certainly sounds like it from the symptoms. Have you any other spinal issues, what have you been diagnosed with? The reason I ask is that many back problems have similar symptoms and they often overlap. It could be a combination of more than one thing.
At the moment I'm having lumbar, upper and lower leg pain with tingling and numbness in the calf as well. I have DDD and scoliosis and it's difficult to know which condition is causing the pain.
My specialist is planning on giving me epidural injections in May in the hope it helps so maybe a nerve block or cortisone injection could help you. The advantage over taking medications is that the injections directly target the site of the inflammation.

Re: Pain Relief for Intense Sciatica Pain

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it! I've never been given any kind of meds for nerve pain...only anti-inflammatories, steroids, muscle relaxants, and narcotic pain killers. Now I'm wondering why I was never given meds to try specifically for nerve pain.....

As for my diagnosis....I dont have one yet with this sciatica I'm dealing with and it's turning out to be quite a circus & frustrating trying to get someone to check me and send me for an MRI. But I do have spondylosis, DDD, and had surgery this past Sept for severe central canal lumbar stenosis (due to 2 centrally herniated & torn discs, bony build up, and thickening/buckling of the ligamentum flavum) I also have lupus, though luckily no major organ involvment, it's mainly my joints, muscles, major fatigue, rashes, UTI"s, and some other symptoms. I also have some hip pain & was diagnosed with early OA in there (had an MRI to make sure I didnt have avascular necrosis, which was clear so far)...

I have been religiously going to PT 3 times per week for a whole year now. So I exercised in pain before surgery and keep on doing it to strengthen my core. I was doing great after surgery, which relieved my stenosis pain and enabled me to walk upright again. Then all of a sudden I gradually had more & trouble doing my exercises (leg lifts were becoming the hardest), and over the course of 2-3 weeks, I felt like I was in a lupus flare, except that it was only located in my sacral/pelvic/hip/buttocks area. I felt bruised or like I was kicked by a horse. Then 3 weeks ago the sciatic nerve pain started in my left leg. I woke up from sleep in extreme pain (was laying on the bad side), got up and realized I had no feeling in my left foot. And to this day, I still have the pain from my rear all the way down my leg, into my ankle and outer foot. The numbness varies, but I always have constant pins & needles from my ankle into my foot. The only thing that relieves it a little is standing with my left leg bent at the knee. Sitting and laying down in any position is brutal. I've literaly had about 2-3 hours sleep per night for 3 weeks now.

My spine surgeon is out of the country for a while and there's one other doc filling in for him, but he cant get me in til May 9!!!! My rheumy suddenly doesnt want to look into it...he tells me I need to go back to the spine doc. I called some other more local spine docs and cant get in to see them for at least a month. The PM wants an MRI done before I go there and the walk -in med center suggested I see a PM...so IM going in a big circle and not getting any help. Sorry for my long ramble..Im sooo frustrated and sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired & exhausted from lack of sleep. I dont even care about the pain anymore..I just want and need to sleep without waking up constantly from jolts of pain. I know the epidurals helped me the last time I had sciatica higher up in teh spine.and I just want to get it done again as I'm sure it would relieve this pain but I cant seem to get anyone to try to approve and MRI to see exactly what's going on......

Ughh, sorry again,....i'm done with my rant but thanks again for the replies
