    Opana ER Advice

    Hello my friends,

I need some advice on Opana ER.

I have tried several different pain meds, as many of you have as well. Oxycontin seems to have worked the best for me so far, taking into account a balance of pain control and side effects. I have found Oxycontin (oxycodone) to have a better side effect profile than some other meds I've tried. is too up and down. I can't forget to dose because the withdrawals always remind me. I can't take it before bed because I cannot sleep when my opioid-levels are too high. Therefore, I usually wake-up in the middle of the night in pain and withdrawals. I find with the ups and downs, it affects my mood a lot. When I'm in slight withdrawal, I get irritated and impatient.

So my doctor (the PA actually) had me try Opana ER. She put me on a high cross-over dose. 240 mg per day -- same as my Oxycontin dose. Well, I just didn't do well on it. I think I had a bug or something and I felt crappy, but wasn't sure what to attribute it to. After the 15 day trial of the Opana, I went back to the doctor for a re-assessment. I was afraid to stay on the Opana ER, afraid I would get "stuck" on something that did not work for me. So I asked to switch back to Oxycontin.

After that appointment, I had to wait a few days still to get my Oxycontin filled. And wouldn't you know, in that few days, I started doing really well on the Opana ER. I really started to like it. It was so steady. Also, I was just taking 2 pills in the morning and 2 at night (2/3rds of my full dose, with my doctor's permission). I liked just taking 2 pills in the morning and not having to worry all day. No more getting thrown into withdrawals and I was able to sleep thru the night. Most importantly to me, my mood improved -- I wasn't so cranky.

The only downside was I had more breakthru pain. I think with the lower dose of Opana ER, I will need to ask for an increase in my breakthru meds. But I don't like to ask my doctor for too much at once.

My appointment is tomorrow. I guess I'm still afraid to commit to a new med, afraid I will make the wrong decision. I guess I will just discuss this all with my PA...she is very nice and understanding. Sometimes I get kind of afraid when there is no need to. I think the fear comes from the terrible way that I was treated before finding my pain specialist.

I'm wondering what are your experiences with Opana or Opana ER specifically? How does it compare to other meds?

    Thanks, Wren

Just explain things to her like you did here. It makes perfect sense to me! I know you are fearful about commiting to something, because it takes them sooooooo long to listen and do something, when something is not working. (at least it does my doctor) Just tell her what you told her, and that you would like to try it again, but are fearful of a total commitment. I am sure she may understand your fears.

It's not a perfect science to figure out what is going to work best for anyone. This is all trial and error, for you AND your doctor. Your doctor knows that, and should take your fears into account.

Hope you get it figured out! Good Luck!
