Can't get on top of the pain, really need some advice

It's been a week since my surgery, and I am feeling horribly depressed and irritable. I cannot get on top of this pain, and I have no options as far as additional or different meds.

My cp meds are oxycontin 20mgs twice daily, and percocet 10mgs twice daily. (I have been on this dosage for so long, I have a high tolerance to both, and I get a 50% decrease in my chronic pain on this dosage) All the surgeon has allowed me for surgical pain is the same dose of oxycontin with an increase in the percocet to one every 4 to 6 hours.

I have YET to sleep through the night. I wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning in so much pain I cannot go back to sleep. At my post-op appt. the surgeon wanted to decrease the percocet to 7.5 mgs! I said that I wasn't ready, but the surgeon says that I have until next week to just be taking the oxycontin, then he is weaning me off all pain meds.

It seems that my tolerance has grown extremely quickly in just a week. I am allowed sparingly to take two percocet, but it doesn't even phase me anymore. He only allowed me to have 30 of the percocet and 14 of the oxycontin. (That's 5 days worth of the percocet if you stick to one every 4 hours, and a week's worth of the long-acting).

My pain doctor basically abandoned me and states that the surgeon is in charge of my pain meds until he releases me. I have been trying so hard, even taking NSAID's when I am not supposed to due to ulcers, and I am still in pain all the time. I barely sleep, and I am a witch most of the time, and yet I cannot make myself take a good dose of percocet, for fear of running out and having nothing.

Please, if anyone has some suggestions, I would really appreciate it. In the hospital, the nurses would give me other meds (that I have prescribed) to help in addition to the pain meds. I haven't tried this, as I am unsure as to what is safe, and I am very conservative when it comes to mixing meds, but I may just be doing myself more harm than good. I have scripts for flexeril, phenergan, klonopin, and over the counter benedryl (which I have been using unsuccessfully to sleep).

Any help would be so appreciated! Thank You.

    Sweetie,
I am so, SO sorry you are hurting so badly and not able to get a good nights sleep, or even any kind of real relief from your pain. I just feel terrible for you and wish I could make that pain go away for you.

I know you feel abandoned right now, as many of us would if we were in your position. Is there any possible way you can speak with your PM doctor and have him call the surgeon and talk about this? If your surgeon isn't sufficiently able to manage your pain, he needs to let your PM doctor take over. He needs to call your PM doctor and release you into his care.

With it being the weekend, it will more than likely be impossible to make this happen. Is going to the ER an option to consider at all? I know it's not the best, but if they can get some kind of IV med into you, it may get you through the weekend at least. I know you wanted desperately to get out of the hospital after your surgery, and the thought of going back probably isn't a good one for you, but I can't stand the thought of you being at home and in so much pain.

I'm really sorry if I've not been able to help you out, but I am thinking of you and sending positive thoughts and prayers for healing and relief from your pain. Please take care and know we are here for you.

    Hugs

Hi: Sorry you're having such a hard time!!! Were all these meds rx'd at the same time/dr after your discharge from the hospital?

I don't know what type of surgery you had but would heat/ice help? Or do you have a tens unit to use? I know that all of these things help to a degree when you are out of options-temporarily-because of the weekend.

It does seem harsh since you just had surgery.

    Good Luck...

    hi there
i am so sorry for your situation, and although none of us can probably solve you problem, i can say i understand the post op stuff...although my pm doc did take care of all meds in recovery and the rest of the hospital time...i feel for you because i know its hard..i have had one cervical fusion and 5 lower lumbar surgeries...and its so normal to feel depressed and irritable, even if the pain was under control...i remember my mom coming here and making me leave and go to her house for a night, i was so down...i had already been through two lower surgeries within 11 months of the cervical fusion..i remember i had posted alot during that time...I have been away and caring for my mother who had a aneurysm and stroke (she was 60 at the time and a health fanatic, so what does that tell you) But a thought from people here always helped....i would call the pm doc, if your relationship is good, and you tell them what is happening, then perhaps they will step in.
good luck and your in my prayers

Re: Can't get on top of the pain, really need some advice

Thank you everyone, and Ozzy God Bless your sweet heart! The flexeril is an on-going script for muscle spasms, and the Klonopin is as needed for anxiety. At the hospital, the nurses would give me a flexeril and a percocet together when the pain was really bad, or a percocet and a klonopin at the same time. Seemed like it helped it work better? But I am concerned about doing this at home for some reason.

Last night was another rough one. My surgery was abdominal surgery. I can only lay on my back, or one side. The back pain and surprisingly tailbone pain, have been severe in addition to the abdominal pain. I wake up every night about 3 am in so much pain, it is overwhelming. I have to take pain meds to get back to sleep.

Thank you all so much for your support. I am just at my wits end. If anyone has any ideas, I would so appreciate them!

    Butterfly-
I can tell you that I've been prescribed percocet & flexeril together before and taken them together with no problems. My only thoughts are that if the surgeon didn't prescribe both for you to use for post-op pain, and something did happen, then he would be angry and that would not be a good situation for you. I just wish I had some sort of concrete suggestions for you.

The boards are kind of slow on the weekends, but I really wish someone who can give something more to help you would stop in and see your post...

Please, first thing Monday morning, call your PM doctor and make them aware of the ongoing pain issues you are having, tell them the surgeon wants you off all of the meds and only taking oxycontin in a week's time, and that you really would like to be back under his care instead of the surgeon's care from here on out. You PM and the surgeon can discuss this if they so choose. I'd hope your PM doctor would want you back under his care in a case like this.

I just don't know what else to say...wish I did though. It's so hard to hold on when you are hurting. I am hoping your doctors will come to the rescue and give you the help you need. I don't feel you are looking for a miracle, but instead just wanting to have your pain managed more appropriately. Sufficient, quality rest is imperative during the recovery process, and if you aren't getting that because of the pain, then one of your doctors needs to step in and do right by you.

    More hugs coming your way....

    Butterfly,
I don't really know if this will help but I am also prescribed perocet 7.5 flexril 10 and clonapin. I take them together all the time (either perc and flex or perc and clo) with no problems. I believe you said you were given them together at the hospital? If so you will be OK to take them like that at home. As far as the surgeon being mad about you taking them if they are prescribed top you I do not think he can say anything about it. I agree with the other post that you need to see about you pm doc taking over. It has been my experience that most surgeons are very unconpasanite. When I had my back surgery I was on norco 2 every 6, flexril 4 times a day, neurotin 3 timed a day, xanax as needed, he sent me home on darvacet 3times a day with the neurotin and cut off everything else. Well that lasted all of about 6 hours till I showed up at my pcp hysterical and my pcp fixed it and said he thinks all surgeons should have to have surgery be for they can practice so they know what it feels like. I know this probably was not much help but I really do think you will be OK to take the meds together for a boost. Good luck and god bless.

Re: Can't get on top of the pain, really need some advice

I am so sorry for your pain. Althought I have been having constant pain for over a year at least I can sleep at night. I think one reason is that I take amitriptyline at night for migraines and I also have a muscle relaxer. But before this I was taking an herbal medicine at night, but I can't remember the name of it. I am not sure what you can or cannot take with your medicines but it might be something that would help you. I certainly pray that you get into see the doctor tomorrow or at least have a phone conversation. I am sure relief will come to you.

Re: Can't get on top of the pain, really need some advice

o/p sorry you are going through this, one thing dawned on me did you get prior approval for your surgery from your pain guy?

Recently i went through bad sitation with my mouth and made dentist call my nuroligist he called in stuff for that . I latter got a call from my nuroloigst thanking me for letting him know.
Also katrina made a good suggestion too, amitplene can be used for other purposes besides anti depressants and works great for itches and sleep . You might be albe to suggest that to doc and see if it would help your med mix.
Most of all i wish you relief and sleep.
I am sure the stress from surgery affected you every where else too.
Take care of yourself be good to yourself.Hope you get some releif and help soon
