Question How well does Darvocet work?

Hi everyone. I went to the orthopedic doc about my chronic knee pain (had surgery almost two years ago and am in need of a knee replacement but will have to wait until after my total hysterectomy in 10 days) and told him that the Ultram works fine on normal pain days but the days when it is unbearable I need something stronger and he gave me Darvocet.

I have never taken this drug but that is what they gave my sister after surgery for her gallbladder removal. How well does this drug compare to Lortab? I have had Lorab after my knee surgery and know that it works well when the pain is really bad.

    Thanks for any help!
    Take care all.

Of course everyone is different but Darvocet worked as well as Lortab for me, the problem being that to get enough of the darvon part (propox a something) the tylenol dose got to be too high - I always ended up with the lortab or norco 10/325 so I could take 3 if needed
    Peace to all Aver

I am sorry to say that for me, Darvocet is useless. There was a recent study that showed that Darvocet was as effective in pain relief as two aspirin. It seems to help some people though. I hope it helps you!

I wish you luck with Darvocet. I took it a few years ago for something and all I remember is it did nothing.

I'm on darvocet for back pain. It works in abundance (like 3 or 4 at a time) but 1 in the am and 1 in the pm as prescribed isn't very effective.

Got absolutely no relief from darvocet. Similiar to what someone else wrote, I read a study that said it is about equivalent to two tylenol. Actually, I found the tylenol more effective. It is my understanding that lortab/vicodin (hydrocodone) of at least 5 mg is considered more effective.

Most studies, and me give Darvon (Darvocet) a low rating for pain control. That said my wife loves it for mild-moderate pain.

One big concern is the LD-50 (a dose that would kill 50% of people) is quite low. Got to be careful or you can end up dead.

Re: How well does Darvocet work?

Darvocet has never, ever provided relief for me--not even in the early days of my use of opiate-type pain relievers!

After I had my wisdom teeth removed, Darvocet was what the Dentist prescribed me--after a great deal of debate. When I took the Rx into the pharmacy, the pharmacist informed me that I should not mix the propoxyphene (the main stuff in the Darvocet) with the Tegretol (carbamazepine--had to look that one up!). After much discussion, I was Rx'd Lortab 10's by the Dentist. The hydrocodone was significantly more helpful than any form of Darvocet would have been--and I wasn't that deep into my pain management treatment. That happened about 10 years ago. I had an appointment with my PM Physician a few days later, and he didn't seem very impressed with the Dentist's choice of pain relief.

Just from my own observations from prior experiences with Darvocet, I hardly think that Darvocet-N (100 mg propoxyphene napsylate, 650 mg acetaminophen) is comparable to Lortab 10's. Maybe it was just my own physiology or something! Darvocet is a Schedule IV, while Lortab 10 is a Schedule III. I usually figure that a Schedule III pain reliever is more potent on most people than a pain reliever that is a Schedule IV.

Short version: Darvocet is not that potent for most people--especially if they have used opiate-type pain relievers for an extended period. Not that short, huh?

    Sincerely,
    Jon (Conductor)

Darvocet was the 1st pain med I was given by my primary before being referred to a pain specialist and it did next to nothing for me. Of course the prescribing instructions were to take no more than 1 per day . Even at 2 it was pretty useless. I'd rather take Tylenol #4.

Re: How well does Darvocet work?

Well unfortunatly for me darvocet does nothing and by the way is a totally different drug than Lortab. Darvocet contains something called propex??? and caffiene, Lortab conyains hydrocodone which is a schedule III narcotic. Darvocet also made me very sick on my stomach (probably because I took to many of them ) hoping they would help my pain if I took more which they did not. Anyhow two different meds altogether.
