    Codeine Cotin

Hi I am new to this site. I hope you can help with a few questions I have.

I am currently on Codeine Contin 100 mg twice a day. I was reading info on this medication to get to know the drug better and how it works. My first question is why are you not allowed to cut the 50 mg in half? What happens if someone does? The other thing I'd like to discuss is more of a comment on a previous thread I read in here...What is the highest daily dose for Codeine Contin? I read that a patient took up to 1600 mgs a day? Isn't that an overdose?

Thanks people for any information you can provide about this drug.

    Re: Codeine Cotin

Is this the same thing as codeine sulfate?

    It's continuous release codeine phosphate.

In the US you can't get codeine as a single entity except in the hospital as an injection, as far as I know.

They still make Codeine Sulfate tablets. I was on them for a few months back in the '70s. They are very small and are easily broken or crushed, so you have to handle with care. They come in 15, 30, and 60 mg tabs.

You should be able to cut it in half. You should not chew or crush the pill. Call your pharmacist to verify but I don't see any reason why you could not cut the pill in half.

    Re: Codeine Cotin

I have to believe there's a good reason why the literature indicates that the 50mg tab should not be cut in half. Maybe the other dosages are pills that are scored, so by being cut in half the integrity of the coating and formula is retained, and maybe the 50 is not made like this.

I don't think you'll overdose on 50mg of codeine, but you may well lose the continuous release mechanism.
