Norco VS Avinza..

i just figured out where to post on here. posted on someone elses thread earlier. sorry...

i have been on norco 10/325 for about a year maybe a little longer and before that vicodin in various dosages for fibromyalgia and arthritis. lately, my pain has increased but so has my stress which causes flare ups. Doc wants to switch me to Avinza. I want to know the difference if anyone really knows from experience. I am also Bipolar 2 so depression is an issue with me. i have seen that Avinza can cause tiredness, groggy etc..i definitely do not want that. with teh norco i actually feel mentally better which i am sure is due to an effect of the drug. the thing is, so what? im not taking more of it, never have but i am also very afraid of taking a drug that may knock me out. norco does not nor has ever done that. how do i explain this to my doctor. we had an issue where he prescribed ultram for breakthru pain. well had a HORRIBLE reaction ended up in the ER. now he wants to put me on morphine because its ER. i actually understand his reasoning behind this with having to take less pills and avoiding the ups and downs but actually im ok with that! im used to this medication and would like to stay with it until it no longer works, then i would consider it. isnt avinza more addicting than norco? or morphine anyway?? my insurance will probably not pay for the ER so it will more than likely not even be the ER anyway so what is the point? im scared and just want to keep my regular regimine. i'll deal with the break thru pain with ibuprofen or flexeril. my stress is about to end anyway. ive been living with a "friend" who drives me into stress overdrive and am about to move with my kids into a new place. at that time things will be back to normal. i guess i just made the mistake of telling the doc about breakthru pain? didnt know he was gonna wanna change EVERYTHING. sorrry long first timer vent....help.

Re: Norco VS Avinza..

Yes the norco and the avinza are two comletely different medications. Unfortunately they do not make extended release hydrocodone. I know what you mean about the energy or not being depressed feeling. Hydrocodone is about the only med that doesn't really make me feel tired or groggy. However, you must take a narcotic medicatoin to TREAT THE PAIN and not for the HAPPY FEELING that it gives you. Trust me this can really lead to addict thinking really quickly. However, I don't know why your doctor would be opposed to you taking the Norco as a BT mediction and have the Avinza as your LA mediction. It sounds like you really do need to be on a LA medication but you will probably have to experiment. Hopefully the Avinza is a good fit and you don't experience too many side effects. Just remember that it take awhile for the side effects to subside especially the drowsy effect. Hopefully things will work out well with the Avinza. Keep us posted.

he may continue the hydro for bt dont know yet. yes i know, u are right. i think for me it is "im happy, im not hurting" not that im high. i can drive, i am not sleepy, i feel "normal". i have never with the exception of when i started taking it noticed anything, tiredness etc.. no side effects except that it works. i have had quite a few scary "reactions" to other meds as well so guess on that note im nervous about something happening and its stuck in my system for hours and hours. but my insurance did not pay for Ultram ER only the regular so im going to assume they wont pay for the Avinza either which puts me right back to taking several a day...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..just so tired of all this CP stuff just doesnt seem fair at 38. but i'll deal.. thanks for your response :)

I know exactly what you mean concerning the frustrations with medications and side effects. I am also bi-polar2 as well so I can definitely relate. What do you take for your bi-polar if you don't mind me asking? If your insurance does not cover the Avinza or the copay is outrageous then you could always try MSContin or Kadian whic have the exact same active ingredient as the Avinza and are both LA meds. The only difference is that these two drugs last 12 hours so you take them two times per day. This would significantly cut down on the # of pills you take. I am just trying to think of some options for you to take. If your health insurance has a website you might be able to check on the price of the meds online or call the customer service # and ask how much the copay is on these meds so you will be prepared the next doctor visit. Hope that helps some. What we can not do alone we can do together so hold on.

Re: Norco VS Avinza..

Brian,

I use MS Contin and I have to take it three times per day. It turns out that it's kinda like OxyContin, in that 12 hours is just too long for many patients. So I take the MS Contin every 8 hours and that seems to cover the pain. When I was switched from methadone to MS Contin the doc automatically dosed it at three times per day.

Hi there. I just wanted to confirm for you that your insurance probably will NOT pay for Avinza, based on what you described. I have fabulous insurance who has always paid for everything, no questions asked, and after taking Avinza for 2 months while they were deciding (and paying over $400 by myself), they decided NO. Just want to make sure you're aware. Best of luck!

I was on Avinza with Norco for BT pain and Soma for better part of a year and a half. I did work but as with all meds the longer you are on them the less affective they become.

I am now on Fentanyl 75mcg patch, with Norco for BT and Soma. It is doing alright so long as the weather holds stable. However if it gets damp or we get rain I am in pain big time even with the Fentanyl, Norco and Soma. Also suffer from Crohn's disease so when that happens it kicks up the back problem big time

Norco is a pretty good medication. Ask you doctor if you can take the Avinza and have the Norco for BT pain. It doesn't hurt ot ask.

I just wanted to add that I switched from the hydrocodone to mscontin because my insurance wll not cover the avinza. My pharmacist said the reason its so expensive is because it was made to where people couldn't shoot it up.I take 30mg of msc extended relief every 12 hours and just yesterday she switched my lortabs to 15mg msc immediate relief 3 a day for break thru pain and increased my Lyrica.I have found the lyrica has been a major role in my pain relief PLUS it helps me to sleep without waking up due to nerve pain.I dont know if I helped,I sure do like to talk! lol!;)

Have you seen a difference between the hydrocodone & the msc immediate relief especially with any drowsiness?

As a matter of fact I did,I dosed off watching the evening news and I never dose off.The hydrocodone definately gave me more energy.I still have 4 refills left on my lortabs, wonder if I'll get in trouble for filling them and taking those in the mornings.I'm not under any contract.I get my meds from my primary doctor.
Have you seen a difference between the hydrocodone & the msc immediate relief especially with any drowsiness?
