Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

OK. . . Where to cry? Bringing Mom did not help, though she was great! ! ! I couldn't have thanked her enough. My dose problem did not get solved. The doctor shot us both down. He told me I have built an addiction and that I need to go to rehab. I started to cry, so bad. I told him he needed to learn how to treat people and respect them, and that not everyone is a "drug seeker". I said, "you do not have me on the correct dose." He didn't say a thing. I went over everything. I know, probably not the best thing to say. . . But I could not take it anymore. He said if I needed something changed I needed to go back to my primary care doctor. . . What a ******* mess ! ! How much can someone beg for help? I told him about all this pain I am feeling in my joints now. . . He referred me to an arthritis specialist. He is convinced I also have rheumatoid arthritis ! ! They drew blood. I just keep getting worse and worse. . . They find these problems and bounce me off to some other dip-hole who will do the same. Some nights I wake screaming in in pain. The doctor also told my Mother and I that there is not need to treat with a stronger dose because this is (in his words) "what all my patients are prescribed (10mg Oxycontin 2 times per day)'" I flared up and said a bit loud, "I am not your "every patient, and how dare you compare me to everyone else, I am in individual, with individual circumstances and special needs" Again, I started to cry so bad. He then told me how bad he felt that he couldn't do anything more and said. . . "You know what Tony, I am going to give you something that I think will allow your Oxycontin to start working again." LOL. . . I am sitting here looking at a bottle of Indomethacin ! Take 1 capsule by mouth 3 times daily. Double the dose the first day. Now, he not only wants to make me suffer from pain, he's going to kill my liver and kidneys to stop me from coming back to him again and again. I know you have all gave great advice. . . . I will use it after my primary care physicals appointment tomorrow morning at 8:30am. . .Wednesday 04/23/2008. This is the last of all attempts I am willing to make. I now have 5 doctor appointments coming in the near future. . . Rheumatology, Physical Medicine, Back, PCP, Physical Therapy (which never helped me because my body is falling apart quicker then they can put it back together). Oh well. . . Back to square one for T. How big can your knuckles swell to make a doctors mouth drop? Give up? Are you sure? Big enough to look like I have elephantitis of the hands!!! I can hardly type anymore. Yeah, I know, you'd never guess by how much I have typed thus far. I do still have my Oyxcontin, and I am NOT following the prescription. . . Because I can't take it. If I take what's prescribed. . . I will be sitting at a level 8 pain wise. . . . I would rather self medicate (which I do not support or condone one bit) and have 10-15 days pain free, or very little, then be at a level 8 for 30 days. I keep telling them, put me on a dose where I can live, be well, work, hang out with my friends, leave my house, be with my family, my loved ones . . .The doctors are like Blah, Blah, Blah, tell us another sad, sad, sad story as if we don't hear it everyday day of the week, 365 days per year. I don't know how my doctors can face me in the eye and ignore me so easily? How they can not feel quilt, how they can sleep at night. I have no addictions other then cigarettes, I have never been to rehab, nothing. Apparently, we are all the same color (people that is), speak the same language, have the same exact amount of pain, are much like the "everyday person" we walk past, all have the same color of hair, eyes, height, weight, and so on. . . . . I am sure some of you may read my postings and think. . . There has to be something Tony is not telling us? There has to be a reason Tony's doctors are doing this to him? Is this really possible? I will swear on everything in my life. . . That everything I have told you is the honest to gosh truth! ! ! I'm only 28. I WANT MY LIFE BACK. I WANT TO LIVE LIKE MY FRIENDS DO, I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON PILLS ANYMORE! If I could turn back time, to 4 or 5 years ago, I would have cherished every waking moment. . . . Knowing what I had a head of me. The hurdles I'd have to be jumping everyday. The slaps across the face I'd face, the rejections from doctors. I guess I am stuck in a network of doctors who heads are so far up their A**' it's preventing them from thinking humanly, it's called' "SUFFOCATION." Hmmmmm and they are wondering why everyone who comes to see them for pain stinks like crap, smells fishy? Uh, cause their heads have been up their A** for hours on end. Oh well. . . I will keep you guys/gals posted. I am not going to ask for luck, it appears nothing helps at this point.
    Tony

    Tony:
I have one suggestion and one only, get yourself a PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR. These doctors actually do care about getting your pain down and treating it. I doubt you need all of these other doctors and it is probably going to be a waste of time. Get your self an appt with a PM doc and make sure they also manage medications as well because some PM docs only do procedures/injections. However, you will be absolutely thrilled, I hope, and they will listen to you and do whatever it takes to get your pain to a manageable level. That's all that I can suggest.

I assume this quack is your GP? Brian is right....You need a PM Doc....Hopefully, there are some good ones in Minneapolis.

I'm soooo sorry you had to go through this.

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

Tony, first of all, follow Brian's advice. Channel all this hurt and frustration energy into finding a pain management doc. I believe you that you are telling us everything. Unfortunately there are just bad docs out there. I was in the same situation you are in, I had a PA go off on me the day after I got out of the hospital from surgery. He said alot of the same things yours did to you, blah, blah. I like you was hurt, frustrated, angry because I had done EVERYTHING they had asked me to do, followed every rule never did ANYTHING WRONG. After I settled down I thought you know what, it took me being in pain for 19 years before anybody listened to me and I finally got a diagnosis, so BRING IT ON, I can do more if I need to until I find the right doc. I fretted all month and you know what? I went in to my next appointment and got a significant raise in my pain meds.

Try the best you can to take your meds as directed so you can be completely honest when you find a new pain doc. You will find someone to treat you. You are strong and you can do this.

You will be in my prayers

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

I think it is a pm doctor because Tony made a statement that "He said if I needed something changed I needed to go back to my primary care doctor. "

First off, Tony I believe you and that you are telling us everything. The reason I do is because surgeons and doctors can be very cruel when handing out pain scripts. I also realize that they do some things to protect themselves. Just sometimes I wish they could walk a mile in a chronic pain patients shoes and then they would change their tune.

Truthfully, I am sorry this has happened to you and I guess 10 mg. 2 x a day is better than none and in the meantime, I would be making multiple appts trying to find a pm doc who will write scripts for pain.

    Lifting you up in prayer.

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

It worked!! Wednesdays appointment. I got a dose increase on my Oxycontin. As of next Friday, I will now be on Oxycontin 20mg twice a day instead of 10mg. This time, my Mom actually was able to do this for me. I went to my PCP, explained everything, he instantly said NO. Again, the tears came-O-runnin ... He told me to stop taking the Oxy for one month and then it would work again. I was like. . . are you freaken kidding me?????? Then, he told me he was going to place me on Celebrex (sp) . . .which I paid for. . . after reading the drug info. . . I though, great, another SSRI. . .for my pain--full depression. . LOL. After leaving the pharmacy . . . I was so upset. . . I thought. . . To hell. . . I am not leaving this place without making a very strong complaint. . . Well. . . Without given out names and too much information. . . When speaking to the head of the facility. . . My Mom ended up calling. . . They talked for quit sometime. . Four hours later my prescription dose was increased. . . I will now be visiting a world known facility in Rochester Minnesota.

    Congrats.....I think! I'm confused though.....

After you left your GP without any meds (except Celebrex), you went to the pharmacy and why did you complain?? Also, your mom called the GP?? And she was able to convince the Doc to get you referred to a PM clinic?

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

I went to my PCP and he said NO right away, I begged and cried for him to reconsider. . . He wouldn't budge. I walked out, got my medicine from the pharmacy. . . and before leaving the building. . . I thought, I am going to complain about how I am being treated to the facility manager. . . I met with this very nice women. . . who actually cared about my situation. . . My Mom ended up calling me and I handed the phone over to this women and they spoke for a while. . within four hours. . my dose was bumped up to 20mg every 12 hours. . . I can't give out too much information. But I am soooooo happy. I will soon be able to move off the couch once again and be with my friends. . . Not dread going to work because of the pain all day. Oh, I do have an appointment with a pain doctor, but he is not able to get me in until June 27

You must be on an HMO.

I am glad that someone finally listened to you. It is frustrating to be in so much pain and no one listens. Congrats!!

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

Tony: First, Congratulations on getting a better dose of meds. It's about time. Since your appointment with a PM doc isn't till June, did the doc say he would rewrite the same if you run out before you see the PM?

You mentioned in a previous post that you were scheduled to see several different docs. One of the departments you mentioned was physical medicine. My PM doc is a physiatrist. They are MD's who specialize in PM&R or physical medicine and rehabilitation. I'm just wondering if this is the PM appointment you mentioned. Or is it a different doc altogether?

Again, congrats! And I hope this gives you some long deserved relief. cmpgirl

I think you may have meant Cymbalta which is an SNRI anti-d and also very effective for nerve pain. You might want to give it a try as an add on with the Oxycontin, if you truly have nerve pain. I am glad that you finally got someone to prescribe it and also a got an appt with a PM doc. I am sure you will be much, much, did I say much happier with a PM doc.

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

    Brian-
Ops, yes, that is what the newest of my drugs is called. . Cymbalta! The only reason I didn't think it would be effective because I was on Lyrica and Gabapantin (sp) Nurontin? Tried both for a good deal of time before I couldn't take the dizziness and the feeling it created in my body.
Physical medicine is with an actual pain doctor where I go. . . Sux not to be able to get me in until June 28. . .
Yes the doctor will keep me on 20mg twice a day until the PM doc takes over.
    Good Ole" HOM's
I was looking at how many people viewed this post. . . It's huge! From the beginning. . . . . To the end. . . . There is sooooo much valuable information within here. I'm going to print it off because I may need to go back to it for advice if another doctor acts up! ! !
I am also really excited to not have to look at another Vicodin again! I hate them. I feel like death on them. . . Every time I need to take Ibuprofen or acetaminophen ! ! For real. . . I have convinced myself that I see blood in my urine each and every time. . . Creaps me out! I worry a lot. . . Because of all my scary medical concerns I have had go wrong. Some of what has happened to me or what my body has done. . . . Would send shivers down your spine.. . .Literally! Meningitis 3 times, Siticosis (a darn bird disease, which kills them) Dropped a can of peanut butter on my big toe and went paralyzed from the shoulders dowe within 24 hours. Don't ask how any of this happened. .!! Ha Ha. . . Beats the docs and me silly. Kidney stones come out all the time. . . I hear them ding the toilet. . . But, I never feel them. . . They have never hurt. . . I can tell when one is coming though. . . Feels kind of weird.
Is this the price I pay for being really athletic growing up?
I posted a long time back about me getting dizzy off Oxycontin. . . . I hope this doesn't start up again.. .. I found out that it helped to have something little in my tum-tum before taking Oxycontin. . . Though I have been on Oxycodone for so long. . . I think my stomach is a bit shot. I have to take prevacid too. 30mgs of that. I try not to take that everyday. . . Sometimes I can get by once or twice a week. . . If it's built up in me. . . I was thinking that may have played a role on my pain relief from Oxycontin. . . Being its slow release. . . . Where was. . Percocet was immediate . . .I just get nasty nasty heartburn. . . But I do not have ulcers.
I found out I should be able to fill my new script for 20mgs next Wednesday or Thursday actually. I was wrong on the past date. I need to tough it out. . . But relief is in the fact that my voice was finally heard. It seems to have been years since I started this post. . . I can't believe I finally got it. It made my headache go away so fast. . . . . But now I have another one right now from stress at my job. . . Oh well. . . You can't win at everything can ya? Ha Ha.

Re: I got placed on a "pain med HOLIDAY"

Man you should be SO GRATEFUL to even be alive after everything you have gone through and I am sure that there is SO MUCH more you could tell us. Maybe you could sit down and post your story at the top of the board, if you haven't already done so. I haven't looked through all the storied yet or done my own. It's hard to bring up the past and all the bad things that have happened to us or hard times we have gone through. If you need a little extra relief, you could try taking extra acetaminophen or ibuprofen until you get the script filled. Just make sure you keep the acetaminophen under 4000mg/day short term, and the ibuprofen under 2400mg/day short term. So glad to see you got the relief you deserve. Now look what might have happened if you had blown a fuse and went off on the doctor like you were thinking. I can only imagine the outcome would have been much, much worse. I know sometimes these doctors really get me so dam* mad but like my good friend told me when I was going through a divorce, you can get mad as he** at her but just keep your cool when you are actually talking with her on the phone or face to face. Trust me that was easier said than done and I ended up breaking a phone after talking to her one night. Ooops guess I spilled a little bit there and go off topic. Good news to hear though.
