    Question about getting meds..

    Hi,

I have a herniated disc at the L5-S1 level. I get terrible muscle spasms frequently and my dr gave me Tiazanidine 2 mg take 1 tablet 2 times a day. I have 2 refils left (60 tabs to a bottle). Well the spasms are getting worse, so today I asked him if it was possible to increase the dosage. He said I could up the dose, but then he decided to have me try Flexeril (10 mg) 1 tab 2 times a day. I got those filled today. My question is, is it possible to still get the refill of the Tiazanidine and alternate it with the Flexeril so I do not become tolerant to either? Will the pharmacy let me get the refill of Tiazanidine now that I have the Flexeril? Or will trying to get it filled alert the FDA or whoever moniters that type of stuff. I don't want my name on any list.

    thanks,

    elizabeth

    Re: Question about getting meds..

Neither are controlled drugs, so you wont get into trouble for filling both, but it might not be wise to mix them without your doctors ok. You generaly wont become tollorant to the effect of these drugs, so no need to worry on that score.

If you feel you need more releif, you could try taking a simple analgesic (eg 2 Advil) when you're in pain, as well as the Flexeril.

    I agree with Johnstar.

I have taken flexeril for years and don't have any addiction issues with it. You might get a little sleepy when you first take it, but that passes.

I certainly would not take both of the meds. You don't need to compounding issues. They both attack the same sort of issues so you would be layers the meds. Take one or hte other but not both.

I would never mix them together. I meant like taking the Flexeril one week, and the other med the next week. Would that be ok?

It would probably be be ok, provided your doctor was aware of what you were doing, but it isnt nessacery, as the body doesnt become tolorant to the effect of these drugs. Better to take one and stick to it.

    Re: Question about getting meds..

You can consider trying the Flexeril and if that works for you, then no need to fill the Tizanidine. Or if Flexeril doesn't work you have the Tizanidine. Neither are controlled substances but a concerned pharmacist could call the doctor to make sure he's aware you are filling both. When I tried Robaxin in didn't work at all so my PM doc put me back on Soma. When I went in to fill it one week after Robaxin the pharmacist asked if I was aware that Robaxin and Soma are both muscle relaxants, etc. I told her Robaxin has made me nauseous so I was changing back to Soma.

I did at one time try Zanaflex/Tizanidine but it made me so dizzy I had to end that one too. I keep reverting back to Soma 350.
