Update on procedure today

Hi everyone thank you for your replys and advice the last couple of days. Here is what happen.

Well I got up early so they told me I can take my meds when I got up but to let them know when I got there. I took one pill at 930 am cause my spine felt like it was tightening up. Well my appointment was at one.

I got there at 12:58 signed in got registered and had to sit there and wait for a hour and a half! Which ticked me off cause they said I would be taken right back and my meds had worn off by this point and my back was hurting so bad I couldnt sit without moving and wincing every few minutes. Well as I am sitting there waiting its now 1:45 who do I see walk by and go to lunch? My doctor going to lunch. So of course I had to wait till he came back and it was so loud in there from the place being completely packed solid there was literally people standing.

So they finally call me back I get changed and the IV started and my doctor comes in and says how are you feeling today? I said in pain. So he laughs in my face and storms out of the room! I was appalled!. So they give me the sleepy medicine and then I go in and I dont know what he was using to clean my back before he started but it felt like he set fire to my back thats how bad it burned. Now this is the same doctor who said he was sure the 2nd shot would fail. Well after the shot and after I get dressed they hand me a paper for the THIRD SHOT!!! I get they come in three but he doesnt even know if this one has worked yet and he said if this one failed he wanted me to see a surgeon????

Well I leave and now I am hope and I am sick to my stomach and in a lot of pain. Tomorrow I have to go see my GP and hopefully he can recommend someone who is a back specialist I can get a 2nd opinion from.

As far as meds I have tried here is some. I have tried cymbalta, savella, valuim, gabbapentan, ever y anti inflammatory under the sun and much more.

I have tried hot showers,heat/ice,TENS unit, physical therapy(which made the problem way worst),massages, stretching, walking around, diffrent sleeping positions, solan patches, lidocain patches all the meds listed above. I feel like I have tried it all and I am out of options. Please pray that this works for me and thank you all again for your advice kind words and help.

Re: Update on procedure today

Sorry things didn't go well.

It seems like at this point you have to either find a new Pain Management Dr. and/or find a Board Certified Orthopedic surgeon/Neurosurgeon and see what they have to say.

As far as surgery goes....you will have to see if the Drs. say it's up to you to have the surgery (elective) or whether they feel it's crucial to do soon.

I know you say you have "tried" the other medications but most people are on more than one at a time as it's never going to be where just one medication (opiate) takes away all the pain.

The opiate (Hydrocodone) just dulls the pain. With all your issues surrounding the nerves...You need to be on a nerve pain medication full time. Why did you go off Neurontin or Cymbalta previously?

Again...you need to think of things as pieces to a puzzle and each medication will take the pain down a tiny notch so they all add up to get you to about a 5-6 on the pain scale.

If you are only taking a narcotic now and no other medications...it unfortunately does look bad to the Drs. that you are not taking the medicine that is specifically meant for your pain (nerve pain)....

So if you approach your Drs. with asking them for any type of help to reduce the pain instead of just wanting to up the Hydrocodone....they are much more apt to help.

I'm not saying you are doing this deliberately...just letting you know what it looks like to Drs. when a patient says, "nothing else works but a narcotic".....

Even a muscle relaxer added in can be helpful..But from what you wrote about your MRI....it is all mainly nerve related so adding in a nerve pain in addition to the Hydrocodone should be very beneficial.

You just need to find a Dr. who is wanting to find the best comprehensive pain program that will work for you. This adds in daily exercise, aqua therapy, TENS unit, steroids, massage, acupuncture, eating healthy, not smoking, maintaining a heatlhy weight, counseling, ice, heat, etc....

To name all the things possible that help a chronic pain patient. As I mentioned...it's not about trying something once...it's about adding up as many modalities as possible daily/weekly/monthly to put a dent in the pain.

Hope you can make an appt. with a new PM and Orthopedic soon...

Keep us posted.

Re: Update on procedure today

Wow, that does not sound like a fun afternoon. I tried the 3 shots as well and am grateful when they did not work by doc said no more. It sounds like a good idea finding a new pain doc. I hope you find a good one who can help you!

Re: Update on procedure today

Thank you guys for your responses! The cymbalta and that I tried for a few months each on top of the hydro and I noticed they werent helping at all and some of them I was having a allergic reaction to. (rashes, stomach bleeding,Hives).

I made an appointment with a ortho surgeon for Aug 8th so I am hoping he can maybe point me in the right direction or give me some ideas. I also am starting Savella tomorrow so I am going to see how that helps. I can see what you mean it looks bad saying hydro is the only thing that helps I shouldnt of put it like that I should of worded it better.

I do eat healthy and I only weigh 93 pounds which sound like under weight but my mom is very skinny always has been and I have a very fast metabolism. I eat and eat but dont gain weight.

I hope you know that I don't think you are doing anything wrong...I just want to help you say things the right way at the Drs. office as I am good friends with my PM outside of my appts. And he tells me the biggest red flags for patients who come in to see him..

As I mentioned...since the majority of your problems are nerve related....asking them for a nerve pain med is absolutely needed. So you can use either Lyrica or Neurontin. They both work very well.

Savella is usually used for Fibromyalgia pain. Have you been diagnosed with this too?

So are you going to wait to find another PM Dr. until you see the Ortho on the 8th? The main reason I ask is that it could take a month to get into see one. So hopefully the Ortho will take over any meds until then.

Keep us posted.
