Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

Hi all - I just had back surgery 9 days ago and am on Oxycodone for pain management during recovery. I noticed over the last 3 - 4 days now that my body odor has been very prominent and stinky! No matter how many showers I take, it comes back and smells awful. Could this be the meds?

    Hi cat38-

That's one concern about oxycodone that I, personally have never heard brought up, lots of folks on here use oxycodone or Percocet (oxycodone/apap). I use it myself as my bt medication and don't have or even notice increased b.o. I am sure my husband would have said something.

Although it could be possible I suppose or sometimes increased b.o. could possibly be a symptom of another problem. You should speak to your doctor about this as this seems to be out of the norm for you.

You could also try researching this on the net-while your waiting to report this to your doctor.

    Good luck

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

Hi BBO7 - yes, I did research it on net and nothing much aside from liver malfunction. I can't imagine my liver malfunctioning on low doses of pain med, however, I have never been this drugged-up before and have never had major surgery. I don't have any of the other symptoms like exhaustion or yellowing of skin / eyes.

I do have hypothyroid and I saw a few things about how that could possibly affect metabolism and body odor. I wonder if my surgery screwed-up my metabolism and my thyroid is out of whack?

This is just so strange and no, I don't have a husband to complain to me but I can constantly smell it, it is rank! Like no other body odor I have ever had. I have a note into my Doctor to follow-up tomorrow. Thanks again for the reply!

Glad you are checking with your doctor. Always report strange side effects.

Surgery can definitely throw your body chemistry out of whack and it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out that's what happened. If so, you will be back to normal soon.

In the meantime as at your pharmacy about "prescription strength" deodorant.

Take care and good luck with your recovery.

Thanks again for your reply. Just updating on medication - it is actually oxycodone acetimanophen 5-325. The aspirin part may be messing with my thyroid as I saw that underactive thyroid is a watchout for this medication. Wish my docs would flag this stuff!

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

    hey there catb38-

forgive me for being so petty but its actually Tylenol(acetaminophen or apap) not aspirin in the percs or oxycodone 5/325. You probably meant that anyhoo.

On a more serious note I am a little concerned for you-do see your doc asap about this matter. I have read kidney/liver malfunctioning/disease (I don't mean related to your recent oxy use) or diabetes or fluctuations in your hormones could cause this symptom-but I don't wanna seem like I am "jumping the gun"-its probably nothing that serious, but I would still hope your doc does some blood work on ya.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to consult with your Gyn also.

My intention was not to scare you its just that I want you to rule out anything harmful to you. I just googled "what could cause excessive or abnormal body odor".

Good luck n let us know what your doctor does/thinks.

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

When I was put on a rather large daily dose of oxycontin, maybe 15 years ago, my wife used to tell me I smelled bad frequently. In fact, I used to sleep in the couch many nights for that and other problems related to the meds. She used to say, don't you remember the Lynyrd Skynyrd song "That Smell"? She said that the song was about just that but I totally disagree. I always thought it was supposed to be about the smell pot smoke. Honestly both of us could be wrong but it always comes to mind when I think about meds and bad BO.

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

Whoopee - LOL, I think you are right! I weaned myself off of the Oxycodone quickly and just as quickly, the nasty BO smell has died down. I am so happy. It was so rank. I'm also happy that it is most likely the meds now. Had a follow-up conversation with my Doc, as well, and she said not to be to concerned if I'm urinating OK and no yellowness of eyes. She said most likely stress rxn to all of the drugs and surgery.

Thanks all for the replies! On the road to recovery and off of Oxycodone - yay!

Dear catb38, Glad to hear that you are so much better & the smell is waning! I have to tell you this story as your thread brought it to mind. Once i was hospitalized for kidjey stone that required surgery & my husb brought me a new face cream i had ordered when he brought my old snail mail. I was out of it sick & kept smelling this weird smell, all night i was up from this & finally i figured outthe smell was like green beans. Told the dr & everyone can smell this smell on me too, had tests, found nothing abnormal. Went home & there the smell was & finally realized the infamous green bean smell was the vitamin A in the face cream! Lol

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

Hi gmak - too funny! Well, I have noticed that my senses are heightened since the surgery since my nerves have all been messed with in my back. I'm pretty sure this odor thing is from the meds though. Haven't had a Percocet all day now and took a shower tonight - very faint smell at this point.
I think I'm hypersensitive to drugs in general. Always have to cut pills in half before taking recommended dose as I've had some bad reactions. This one really tops it though!

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

    Hi all,

Just wanted to give an update. It is now day 3 of going off the Percocet. I noticed over the last 3 days that the odor became more faint each day and as of today, no more odor!

Although, I am experiencing the nasty side effects of opiate withdrawal. Hot/cold spells, headaches, slight nausea, slight cold symptoms like scratchy throat and runny nose, and dizzy with low energy. I'm hoping these go away soon! Anyone have info on how long the side effects normally last?

    Thanks!

Re: Does Oxycodone cause bad body odor?

I may be wrong but I thought it takes a lot longer of a period of time to get so tolerant of opiates that one would go through withdrawal when stopping them. Most people takes them for a couple weeks or 3 after ortho surgery, but do not have withdrawal. Maybe you are just sick? Hope you are feeling better soon. I stopped taking narcotics after over a year of use so I could assess my pain level. The worst I felt through weaning was a pounding heart.
