Pain meds don't work for my herniated disc pain

Hi all! I am new here and have never posted anywhere before. I need advice please. Five weeks ago, the pain hit me hard from a lifting injury I had in April. My pain started at around a five or six and keeps getting worse. My PM prescribed me Vic. 5-325 every 6 hours, but that doesn't help at all. The steroid epidural and the other tries at oral steroids did nothing as well. My last hope is surgery according to my pain management Doc. I go Friday for the consult. I asked my PM tools up my meds to Vicodin 10 but he told me to just my five mg every 4 hours instead of six. Still not working. I'm not sleeping and can't do anything at all without paying horribly for it with double the pain in the evenings. My left is even hurting sometimes and I twitch at night. Please give me any advice you can. How do I explain to my PM how severe this is? it's not like I have any history with pain meds. Thanks!

    rockin robin-

I can relate to your situation and the pain involved-in PM these things unfortunately take time, and there will be some "proverbial hoops" you will have to jump through.

There is no easy answer or fix to your current situation-believe me when I tell you I have been there. At least you are getting something for your pain for the time being.

Have you had an MRI yet? I ask because you mention HNP-but of what? who diagnosed it? how were you referred to PM? Sounds like your PM wants to wait until you see the neuro-surgeon(I am assuming this is the specialist you are seeing Fri for consult?)

At this consult reiterate everything you have said here, see what the surgeons recommendations are, and if surgery is indicated he may also recommend another medication to make you more comfortable also.

If the consult results in a recommendation for surgery, I would get yet another opinion also. Again, if you have not had an MRI and xrays-I am certain you will be sent for them.

In the mean time, you need to just take it easy, try soaking in a hot bath, this can help a lot. Take your pain med as directed, Friday is just a couple a days away, I am certain you will get more relief soon. Try and hang in there best you can, and rest. If you have a heating pad this may give you some relief for the time being.

    Hang in there.

    Good Luck
