    Dear paxy,
Are you seeing a Specialist for this? I sometimes when eating have to stop because my chewing and throat do not seem to work properly, as though the muscles no longer know what to do. I simply stop eating at the time, forget it and eat later. If you are obsessing on this then you should seek some therapy. Is this an eating disorder or a symptom of panic? Either way you should see a Therapist about this. Eat when you can and get some help for this. Good luck paxy.

    Sincerely,

    Sickman

    Hi Paxy,

Ive not read any previous postings made by you.Do you have Panic Disorder or Anxiety?

Choking is a common complaint among many that suffers from Panic Attacks and Anxiety. The reason we do is,when we're Anxious our chest and throat muscles tense up.

When you relax and dont constantly think of the choking sensation it will pass.Like you Ive had fear and worry about choking. If my mouth and throat get dry or if it"feels"like I cant swallow the more I pay attention to it the worse it will be.

Whatever you do,DO NOT stop eating!Take smaller bites and chew and chew you will swallow and will NOT choke.

    Hi hun,

I too have choked a few times while eating and it seems worse now since I had my attacks. Especially when I eat corn. I choked the other day and thought I would never catch my breath. To ease my mind, I think of it like this.....if I choke, there is usually someone around that can probably do the hymlec(sp) manuver on me if needed. If no one is around, you could always use a chair on yourself. Throw your body over the top of a chair and hit right about your navel, or anything hard and round/flat. I keep this in my mind and it helps me out alot. I think as long as we have an answer to something we are scared of, it helps us deal with our fears.

I used to be scared of elevators. I would actually walk up the flight of stairs no matter how high I had to go. I am not too thin, so by the time I'd reach the 5th floor I was huffing and puffing. I know it sounds silly, but I did this. I worked at a bank back then and I HAD to find a quicker way to get to the fifth floor because I was taking too long, so I thought to myself.....what is the worst thing that could happen in that elevator? I would get stuck in there. I was so scared to get stuck, but I realised that there is always someone there that could get me out. They had a maintenance man there all day long. Plus, there is a phone in there and an emergency button AND, I also carry a cell phone, lol. So, I finally conquered my fears and now ride the elevator alone. I still get a little nervous, but at least I get on now.

Sorry this was so long. Have a good day hun

Yes, but how often do you hear of someone actaully dying from this? You are more likely to get in a car accident than choke to death. Not meaning you, but in general.

I know it is scary because believe me, I was scared when it happened to me, but worrying about it only makes it worse and it will likely NEVER happen to you hun.

Why don't you read more about the manuver and maybe it will help you out with your fears.

    Talk to you soon

    Re: choke

the inability to swallow any more of the bull turkey of life.

went through this - still do occassionally - have a large glass of water in your hand while eating in stressful times - somehow the water seems to make the throat do as it is suppose to - the more you thing about it the more its going to happen - one can get a food processor and juicer and take your meals with straw if you have too -

its a very bad feeling to be eating and go to swallow and everything seems to be out of order - so you got this chunk of food someplace near the back of your throat and your trying not to panic and get it lodged so you must calmly reach for your water and take a swallow and then continue on - no problem with yuck food - but what if its something you like - and there you sit looking at it -

there use to be the thought that swallowing difficulties could be traced back to sexual abuse when young - to young to remember the particulars - but I do not know if this thinking is still alive and well in the psych community - for me I think it was more to do with my opening statement here..
