Panic From Marijuana Withdrawal?? It's been almost 2 weeks....

I am a 28 year old male. I am an alcoholic that has been sober for 2 years. After quitting drinking I more or less swapped booze for weed and until 2 weeks ago I was a very heavy (5-10 times daily) smoker.

Its been 2 weeks since I totally quit weed and about 4 days ago started having severe panic attacks which center around my breathing. I am constantly needing to take a deep breath and If I dont I freak and go into a full blown panic attack. If I catch my breath I am ok for a few minutes (until the urge do breathe deep returns).

This is driving me crazy Ive already been to 2 ER's and they both said anxiety. One doc gave me a few ativan but I dont like benzos unless absolutely necessary.

I have no desire to smoke dope and Im sure that if I did I would just freak about my breathing more. I just dont know what to do. Im currently self studying for an IT degree and since I quit smoking weed I havent been able to study at all. This is runing my life.

I always knew EXACTLY where to weed was coming from so the possiblity of it bieng "laced" is less than zero. I do NOT want to start popping pills right and left because my dad is severly addicted to xanax after 10 years of use and I dont want to be like that. I just want this constant state of anxiety and panic attacks to go away.

Could dope have been masking a painc disorder or do you think all this is from long term dope smoking and Im withdrawing from it?? I always smoked the highest grade stuff available. To be honest I have only went this long without substances once in my life and even then I was smoking cigs and drinking caffiene which I quit last year becasue of palpitations.

Any and all advice is appreciated. Im going to give this about 2-3 more weeks (if In not toally insane by then) and hopefully it will be all over.

I used to have panic when I was a teen but that was from post traumatic stress after a bad inhalant "trip".

Thanks. Pray that this gets better.

Im 29 and I smoked weed daily, but not heavy for the past 10 years. I had a panic attack one day when I was high and BAM the food gates were opened. That was probably 6 months ago.

I can't smoke weed at all anymore or it gives me panic. Even 1 hit. BAsically I'll share what I've learned. You're gonna have a rough time for the next 3 months.
Your attacks are gonna get worse and become more frequent. Mine were at about 2 a day and the triggers and symptoms were all over the place. After the first month and half of not smoking I thought the weed had nothing to do with it. Because I wasnt smoking but my panic attacks were worse. But after about
2-3 months I noticed they were slowly getting less frequent and less intense.

Its not easy cause there will be ups and downs along the way. I had a week where I felt great followed by 3 weeks of hell at times.

I was told by a doctor its best take shallow breaths during panic. Because deep breaths increase your oxygen in your blood and actually fuel the panic mechanism.

All the times I was convinced I was gonna die, I found it helpful to pray. It also seemed to help if I took the attitude that I didn't care if I died. So what if Im having a heart attack, or Im gonna drop dead in a minute from a brain annurism. Screw it. I can't wait to see the afterlife. That sort of attitude helped me thru quite a few times.

But thats just my experiences. I never had any panic before that. I haven't had an attack in a couple months which is a amazing for me now. The other day I had my first cup of coffee in months and I didnt get an attack. I just got hyper like the good ol days.

I quit smoking on Dec 10. I am now at 4 months totally clean. I had smoked for 12 years. At the end I was a heavy smoker. The first time I tried to quit I got real anxious and hated it. The second time I quit I didnít have a choice. It made a HUGE psychological difference. I am not near as anxious as I was the first time. I donít know what the difference was.

I honestly think it is withdrawal. If you tell yourself it is in your head do you think it might help? Your thinking has major control over your body. I guess I donít know what I can say to help you but my guess is it will go away soon. It is just as much psychological as it is physical. (Probably even more) Good luck!

my first panic attack was at age 17 and while high i promptly quit but the panic attacks didnt.i have a chemical imbalance and the maryj made it worse with shallow breathing and super rapid heartbeats and a total freaking out.after tons of test i found i had panic disorder and with the help of xanax, imipramine, and atenaol i got better it took a long time but i got my panic under controal.i still take all above mentioned drugs as prescribed and i am now 39 years old.and i can also tell u that all the hype of xanax is just that hype if u dont abuse them they r great and not addicitive.i now take .25 mg a day when i remember, but at first years ago i took 2.5 mg a day.lowering my dose when needed was no of luck to you.

Bad Idea. I don't know what doctor told you this but they are completely wrong even though I am not a doctor, but this is wrong in anybody's case of anxiety.
    Not being rude or anything

Anyways shallow breathing fuels panic, that's why shallow breathing is a common symptom of panic because it fuels it.
Slow deep breaths in and out will help tons and tons.
    Shallow breathing causes hyperventalation.
    hyperventalation = longer panic attack
longer panic attack = crappy tommorrow or rest of the day
crappy tommorrow or rest of the day = more thinking about it and the likeliness it will happen again. (agoraphobia)

From my understanding weed should not have withdrawal effects (from what i read on a website). It's more often weed is what causes panic attacks.
Don't start back up or it will get worse, if you have to smoke something smoke a cig for now until it's gone.
Some others will say to get xanax, valium or another benzo to help you get through it, but i don't think you need it...go find some books on anxiety and panic.

NOTE: Withdrawal from any medication is only a physical sensation, they will go away in time and they will not hurt you.
Even though i don't think weed has withdrawal (especially panic attacks).
