Re: how to get over fear of elevators

Majackso1, I used to have the same problem when I was younger. You didn't say what type of elevator. Newer ones installed in the last 20 years or so, if installed in buildings of 4 stories or less may be hydraulically driven. Very similar to that piston used at any car repair shop that lifts your car so the mechanic can work on it underneath while standing.

For higher buildings overhead cables attached to the top of the elevator "car" lift and descend the elevator. For that, seeing the size of all the equipment used to control the motor, and knowing that there is what is called a centrifugal brake on every one, fixed the problem for me.

I too have a fear of elevators especially after having been stuck in one for a few minutes, but I’m not going to let that run my life. So here’s what I do now. I have a little Brookstone light on my keychain just in case, I familiarize myself with the door open button and the telephone inside the elevator, and always have my cell phone with me. If I’m going up or down a bunch of stories, I’ll read a magazine article or a few pages in a book. Little by little I’m getting over it. Try that!

Re: how to get over fear of elevators

I have been stuck in an elevators a few times. YOu would not be there long, they need them in use. People can hear you yell and they have little buttons to press. The last place this happened I was trying to teach my daughter it's safe. Funny, we got stuck and happily they got us out within minutes.she now knows they absolutely get you xan bring a water bottle with you and go to an active medical building to's the safest place I can think of to just go and do it. Honestly, in about 10 years you'll be too tired to run up and down tons of stairs anyway. Good luck and face it no matter what you think or feel . I bet by mid day of doing this your fear will be much lower.
