    Is repeating words fine?

My 3 y old repeating each words two times. My parents are concerned and think she should see specialist. Is it fine. Also she became very picky to clothes and wants to do everything herself. I don't know if i should fight her or comply.

What do you mean by "repeating each word 2 times"? Is she stuttering or she just says the words over and over again? My son will repeat things all the time and he wont stop until he gets my attention.

And the whole clothes thing, she is just wanting some independence, if she wants to get herself dressed, let her. Just pick out her clothes and lay them on her bed. I do this with my 3yr old son. I sometimes have to help him if he puts his shoes on the wrong feet or if his shorts are on backwards, but for the most part he knows what he is doing. If I know that we are just staying home all day I let him dress himself in whatever he wants to wear. She is wanting to act like a big girl, let her.

I don't think there's anything to worry about at this point. A very high percentage of kids stutter at this age (if that's what she is doing) and then outgrow it. Seems their minds work alot faster than they are able to think of words. Makes sense when you consider how short of a time they have been talking, right? Even if it's more of a ritualistic type repeating of words, it will most likely pass. Any anxiety about it that you convey to her will undoubtedly make it worse!

As far as the other - wanting to do everything herself - this is not only normal but a very good thing! I like DaniGirl's suggestions about clothes. I once heard a quote that might be appropriate for you: "never do for a child what they can do for themselves". Something to think about...

Pick your battles. Let her do it her way as long as it's safe.

Thank you. I will probably check her, I've heard it can be done for free.

If she continues to do this past the age of 5-6, once the toddler years are over, you might want to consider looking into Asperger's Syndrome; both echolalia (repeating words) and hypersensitivity to feelings of clothes, lights, textures, etc. are symptoms. I don't want you to worry over nothing as it could very well be just normal toddler behavior, but if it continues long afterwards, just be aware that Asperger's could be an option. My therapist and I both agree that I have a very mild case of Asperger's (I'm 18), and I do have a lot of the traits and they first appeared at age 3. Good luck, God bless, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
