Put the child in his room. Make sure the room is child proof. If he can open the door, put one of those childproof door knob things on the door.

Go to bed.

Expect that:

He'll cry
He'll scream
He'll seem possessed.

Eventually, he will learn that you won't be saving him every time he cries to sleep with you.

And, it might make it easier for you to put your foot down the next time...run with it and don't backtrack.

I think it's actually harder for the parent than the child.

I agree with SocialWorks. Had a similar issue with a boyfriend's child when he was 5. All of a sudden he insisted on sleeping in our room instead of his own. Initially we thought it would pass and let him- big mistake. It turned into a huge production when my BF put his foot down and made the boy sleep in his own room. Tantrum city. Expect it, and just don't give in. The tantrums shouldn't last longer than a week or so, and then the kid understands that you won't give in no matter what and will stop with the tantrums.

Aaaaw - that poor kid. I wouldn't be able to abandon him suddenly like the two previous posters.

What I did was to lie down with mine in their own bed until they went to sleep. If they woke up in the night, I would accompany them back to their own bed and lie down again until they fell asleep again. Took a couple of weeks, but I didn't feel like a torturer.

Hi there, I have 4 children of ages between 8 and 3 years old. My advice will only work if you can bear your child to cry literally for 2-3nights!
I know this may sound cruel, but put you child in own bed and let him cry. He will probably scream over and over. Go in to him every 5 mins for the first 15 mins, then every 10 mins, 15mins and so on - he will eventually give in and go to sleep.
This will be heartbreaking, but believe me it works, and in a few nights he will be sleeping fine on his own. :-)

I second JennyG80...sounds tough but they get over it pretty quickly. As long as they finally understand you are close by and will check on them when needed, they'll finally doze off. It's harder on the parents than the child!

This is what I saw Super Nanny do once. Seems that a lot of parents give in on the other approach so she recommended the mother to just keep escorting the child back to his own room. The child was about 4 I think and he had done it all his life. By the end of the episode, he pretty much just stood in his room.
