    Talking Anyone ever challenged their Dr's or shrink over diagnosis of BPD?

    Hi all,

    I'm just wondering whether anyone has challenged their doctor or shrink over the BPD diagnosis? And if you have, how did it work out? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

    Last week, when I was with the 'lady shrink', I challenged her over why she felt BPD was the diagnosis that fits best with my symptoms. I'm still having just a little difficutly actually believing that I'm BPD.

    My life is quite mundane and really quite normal, no drugs, no self injury, no alcohol, no suicide, no gambling, no over spending (well not including shoes ) and because my life is not unsettled I just felt that BPD was not "the label" for me.

    OK, the symptoms I do have are unbelievable depression, horrendous anxiety, dissociation, frontal lobe problems, emotional intensity, sensitivity to rejection, lack of belonging, and when I'm really really stressed out and on a down-hill slide, I can experience intense ideations, but have never acted on these intense feelings.

    Does this sound like BPD to you?

    The lady shrink seems to think that this is sufficient to label me BPD. But my feeling is that whilst the 'lady shrink' calls this 'compensated BPD' the term 'borderline' seemingly strikes the fear of satan into those medical people who only know BPD by it's most extreme presentations. And this presents a problem because I now have to take a letter writen by the 'lady shrink' to another specialist she's refered me to, and the term 'borderline' is applied to me in this letter.

    I've encountered a fair quota of prejudice over the borderline tag, and do not wish to enter into these diffficult situations again. (very funny, because we were just talking about our avoidance strategies on another BPD thread)

    I'd just like to know if anyone else has had the experience of challenging the borderline personality diagnosis? And how you got on?

    Regards, waratah x

    Thumbs up Re: Anyone ever challenged their Dr's or shrink over diagnosis of BPD?

    This a great question that I would be curious to hear from those with the BPD diagnosis. I have someone in my life that has received this diagnosis and when I asked him about whether or not he agreed with it...he avoided the question. I've read books and articles about BPD and I think that not everyone will exhibit all of the behaviors that BPD encompasses. Also, the degree to which a person exhibits specific behaviors may vary depending on the individual. In trying to learn about this I came across an article that really spoke to me in simple terms about this. Nobody wants to be labeled but in my opinion it's not the label that's important it's addressing the behavior that may be interfering with the person's ability to live a happy, prosperous and satisfying life that's important. I'm still learning and willing to learn more about this as I don't see the BPD in my life as some mentally disturbed person but as someone that needs support to overcome this particular area of his life that's preventing him from being able to navigate through life without being afraid to live and be happy.

    [QUOTE=waratah;3790885]Hi all,

    I'm just wondering whether anyone has challenged their doctor or shrink over the BPD diagnosis? And if you have, how did it work out? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

    I've not had the label bpd attached to me, (as yet, anyway but I keep challenging everyone who keeps putting me a certain box'. The boxes being, depressed, anxious, passive aggressive, of low self esteem. I feel crazy enough without them stirring up more stress in me!

    I can feel 100% great and instantainiously fall into dispair.....that's when I dissociate. I have fleeting suicidal thoughts, and yet I know I would NEVER act on them, (so should they even be classed as 'she feels suicidal)'? And then, as though someone has waved a magic ward, I return to normal???
    Frustration is my problem. Sounds like you have that problem too.
