Post Emetophobia???

I just found out on here last night that there is an actual phobia of throwing up. I haven't thrown up since I was about 13 (I'm 24) I've had a weak stomach for as long as I can remember. Last year I was diagnosed with panic disorder. I found myself worrying about throwing up constantly. I wouldn't eat certain things. I planned when I would eat so that in case I would have to throw up afterwards, I would be some place with a bathroom. If someone says they feel like they're going to throw up, I panic. I think that if they throw up, I will throw up too. Or that they might have a virus and I might get it and I might throw up too. I don't think that I'm so much afraid of the actual act of throwing up, but more of where I'm going to be when it happens and will it catch me off guard, etc. I think since I haven't thrown up in so long, I can't really remember what it's like so it's a lot about the fear of the unknown. And it's weird, I can handle it if my dog throws up. (I can't clean it up though cause the smell makes me gag) I just can't handle a person throwing up. Has anyone ever heard of this? I hadn't until last night. Does anyone else on here suffer from this?

Re: Emetophobia???

I too have only recently learned that what I've suffered from all my life has a name - emetophobia. Strange thing is that it's the fifth most common phobia!

I also have panic attacks and high anxiety, which seems routed in my deep fear of throwing up in public. Something that I've never done, so don't know why the fear is there, it just is. I also consider myself to have a 'weak stomach' and cannot be around the sight, sound or smell of others being sick - kinda hard to do when you have four kids!

My Dr has just this week put me on Buspirone (Buspar) 3 x 5mg per day to reduce my overall anxiety. First two days have made me feel sick as a dog but apparently that side effect passes quickly. I sure hope so!

There are half a dozen really good websites for sufferers of this phobia. I can't include the URLs as I don't think that's allowed, but just go to a search engine and type EMETOPHOBIA and you'll find them easily.

Good luck and stay strong - we'll get over it

Re: Emetophobia???

That's really interesting, it being a phobia. I guess I have it too, but I think it's because if I get started I can't stop for a while, usually get dehydrated and have to go to the ER for IV's. that would make anybody phobic I think. I avoid anything that would cause it too. Have a weak stomach, can't stand to even hear someone, even on tv, do it, can't stand an animal doing it, or even somone play wretching.

Also mucus stuff makes me sick. So glad to see its a phobia.

Re: Emetophobia???

I am so glad to see that more people have emetophobia. I am so afraid of throwing up. I also feel that if I see people throw up, I will too. So I absolutely cannot be near anyone who has the stomach flu or anything similar. I hate that nauseous feeling, your heart pounding, wondering if you will vomit or not, etc. This is the only thing I fear when I have children - treating them when they have a stomach flu.
