Unhappy new to pcos and scared

i was diagnosed with pcos yesterday, and i am freaking out.
i dont seem to have any of the other symptoms of pcos, except for a large amount of cysts on my ovaries. i dont have excess weight, facial hair etc.
is it common to not have all of the symptoms?

i have not had my period in 4 months. my doctor did not seem to fazed about this and pretty much told me to just 'wait it out'. what if i never get it?
how can i bring on my period? what can i take? i dont want to go on birth control as i am dying to get pregnant.

Hi -- I'm pregnant and I have PCOS.

nessa62873, if you don't have the cysts how can you be sure you have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome? I joined Weight Watchers and lost 30 pounds. I also took Red Clover capsules and reduced my caffeine. My Dr. had to open my cervix as it was too small & tight. I have periods maybe 3 times a year if I'm lucky. I'm almost 3 months pregnant now.

newbie777, don't freak out...it's ok and I know what you're going through. I was told that a healthy way of eating & lifestyle can help improve pcos but will not cure it. Last year I skipped the whole year without having a period. I tried birth control for a while and it really messed things up for me instead of helping the cause.

Getting my cervix opened really helped. I was having more periods. It really hurts getting this done but the pain only lasts 30 seconds or so.

what do they do to get your cervix opened up?

my doctor has put me back on the pill for 3 months, in hope of starting to trigger my periods again. and then for me to come off it after that.
i am really upset though, as i dont want to be on the pill because i am trying to fall pregnant.

but my doctor said that not having my periods is really bad for me, and it is making my cysts worse. that is why she has told me to go back on the pill for a while.

how long did it take you to fall pregnant bassethounds? i am jealous

Re: new to pcos and scared

nessa62873 sorry if I offended you. That's not what I wanted to do...it just doesn't seem to fit though if you don't have cysts...that's what PCOS is all about. Maybe you should seek a different opinion? Anyways, good luck and I wish you all the best.

newbie777, my Dr took a long swab (like a q-tip) and he pushed it through my cervix maybe 2-3 times. He said it was really tight. I couldn't see why it would help me get pregnant with my pcos ovaries, but he told me to trust him...the cervix test works 80% of the time. It has to be done 21 days after the 1st day of your period and you have to have protected sex during the 21 days...kinda confusing sorry - I got pregnant 2 months after.

it is possible not to have all the symptoms, but you are lucky. I had all the syptopms since i was 7or 8 and then when i got my period at 10 it was never regular. Im 17 i just got diagnosed a couple months ago. I know how scary it is, i cried uncontrollably for a couple days before i could get a handle on it. THe pill works, and so does natural things like progesterone. if ur desperatly want a child, i suggest a fertilization clinic, they can look over your personel information and give you the best options. Good luck with everything! it seems like the end of the world now, but just think, in can only last for so long. ur situation will work itself out. Just help it along and do everything the doctors say, but dont be afraid to ask for a 2nd opinion.

Re: new to pcos and scared

    thanks PcosGirl17

i have come to terms with the condition at bit better now. i was so scared in the beginning, thinking that i might not be able to have children.
but there does seem to be a few options out there for us like metformin and ivf etc.
i have been to see a specialist, and she has run some more tests. now i am waiting for 6 weeks and having more blood tests. i will then go and see her and she will monitor my hormone levels again.
hopefully something will come from these results. i really want her to prescribe me metformin. i have heard some good things about this medication.
it is good to know i am not alone ot there!

    thank you

Re: new to pcos and scared

    hello, newbie
I also have PCOS. I was diagnosed when I was fourteen. I used to go about nine months with no period then a month with a period, thankfully, I have, in my opinion, the best doctor ever. She gives me a hormone called progesterone, if I do not get a period. What it does is it stimulates the ovary to release an egg to give you a period. My doctor usually gives me seven to twelve pills of this hormone and you take it once a day until you get the period. I'm not sure of the mgs. but it does work.I really haven't needed it in a few years since I've been on my regular birth control. I have been on Yasmin since I was fourteen, but I have tried other birth controls, but Yasmin really is the best because it is anti-testosterone, whichs is the main culprit in PCOS, and for me, it really helps. I'm sorry to hear about your pregnancy troubles, I am only twenty years old, so I have been on my birth control for six straight years.
As for your doctor not having much of a reaction, I would switch to a doctor who cares more or tell him/her how important this is to you and having a child is a big deal to you, so he/she needs to take it more seriously. About the symptoms, its different for every woman, I had some symtoms, like the irregular periods and depression, some women have sever weight gain and ruptured cysts some have none at all, it really depends.
I hope I helped and good luck on getting pregnant -_^

Re: new to pcos and scared

Oh, metformin! forgot to mention that! I am on that, been on it for about four years. It helps prevent diabetes, as women with pcos are unfortunately prone to getting diabetes type two. It also helps with losing weight and lowering blood sugar. Luckily for you, you said you're not overweight, but its good to be on it just for pre-cautionary measures, it has helped me a lot. I read your next post, awesome, happy that your workin on that baby with ivf and other options :] I totally know how you feel about feeling alone, when I was first diagnosed, I did not have a computer, did not know anyone who had pcos, never heard of it, then I researched it, practically became an expert on it, then I learned I am not alone. 10% of women have pcos, we are not alone!
again, good luck on your pregnancy!! -_^

Re: new to pcos and scared

I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS. I still have a normal period, no major hair growth, no discomfort during sex, but there are several cysts around my left ovary. I am 250pds and in the process of dieting to loose the weight to help with the problem. I know it is incurable, however I wanted to know what special vitamins should I be taking and how much?..also.. does having this affect your blood pressure?...my blood pressure was always perfect now it is dropping constantly. Is that normal?..also my white blood count is up and my doctor has recommended me to take Augmentin for the infection although they cant find the infection from various blood tests and other test. Can PCOS cause this infection in my body?..I know its alot but please help if you can..

    Thx

Re: new to pcos and scared

I have been diagnosed with PCOS since 2004. I don't have all the "typical" symptoms either. I have the cysts, I am not overweight (@ time of dx I was less than 100lbs), I am starting to notice some facial hair, I have acne worse than I did when a teen, and missed my period for 4 months. I also have insulin resistance, and am going to my pcp to inquire about diabetes testing. (I have experienced several low blood sugar attacks in the past few months.) I was trying to get pregnant and thought I was just getting false negatives when I was dx. My OBGYN put me on prometrium(sp) to start my cycle again and it worked. She also gave me clomid(sp) to help with the fertility, it didn't work. After a few tries at that I was put on Metformin 500mg once daily for 2 weeks then up to 500mg twice daily. I couldn't tolerate that dose, so I was put on 750mg ER and have been on it ever since. My periods are almost predictible. I am no longer trying to have a baby, I feel that it is not in God's plan right now.
PCOS does affect 1 in 10 women, and a kind of funny thing is that I know at least 5 women at my church that have it. I am starting to think that it affects more than 10% of women. PCOS is not a life ending diagnosis, although at times it seems like it. When I was first diagnosed I had so many cysts on both ovaries that the ultrasound tech stopped counting at 50. I almost had to have surgery due to one of the cysts becoming large and painful. I had many people praying for me and was administered to by elders at my church and when I went in for another ultrasound, it was gone, there was no evidence of a cyst being there; and my ovary had a normal amount of cysts on it! If you believe, ask for prayers and let God handle everything.

Re: new to pcos and scared

    hi,

i was diagnosed with pcos in 2005, was on diane 35 + aldactone 100mg(took vry irregularly). At that time din't know the severity of this problem except for treating my symptoms I had no other purpose.I did get relief (regular periods, further hair growth stopped). Then went for laser in 2008(hair removal, it was effecting till the time I stopped my medicines in oct 2009 because i wanted to get all my tests done.)
I am totally confused and scared at the moment, seems as if nothing is gona work out. Taking diane + aldactone again seems to be the nly option left, but I am tired and sick of being on medicines.
I so not really know abt further complications in getting preg in future since i am still single may be for anthr 2 yrs.But reading all the posts on this forum makes me even more tense as if how big this problem can become. Please advice and help me on this.Definitely feels a kind of relief to see that I am not alone fighting with this problem.
    Please do advice.Thanks

Re: new to pcos and scared

I was diagnosed yesterday. I have the cysts and weight gain, but luckily no facial hair or acne. I was told that if I go more than 3-4 months with out a period there is a medicine that they can give you to help you start ovulating more regularly. Also, if you are trying to get pregnant since the medicine helps you ovulate regularly it makes it easier to get pregnant. There are things they can do for you, so dont let the doctors tell you that they can't.
