Anyone know of PCOS being related to Depo-Provera shot?

I am a twenty-something. I was on the Depo-Provera shot for approximately six years. Since I stopped taking it, which was about three years ago, my periods have been few and far between and extremely painful. They are so heavy I cant keep up with it and I hurt so bad I want to stay in bed. Also in that three year time period, Ive gained about thirty-five pounds. I'm by no means a health nut, but I am better to my body now than I ever have been. I work to make smart choices on my food selection and I make small choices like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Nothing extreme because I just get discouraged when I am unable to lose weight. I had a personal trainer for about 6 months last year. During that time, I was eating right, working out 5 days a week and really doing the "right thing." I never lost any weight from that. I never felt any better. I got literally nothing from the experience but a worse self esteem and a feeling that something wasn't right.
Recently, I spoke with my gynecologist about my strange periods and my inability to lose weight. He did some blood work and found that it was likely PCOS. He also found that my thyroid was way low. Since I am not looking to have kids right now, he has me taking synthroid for my thyroid and he said I need to lose 15-20 pounds (which is a lot easier said than done).
I have a couple of questions about this. First has anyone noticed a correlation between PCOS and the Depo Provera shot? Second, I have read on here that many of you are taking a medication for the PCOS. Are you taking that to try to get pregnant or is that something I should be looking into now with my doctor? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I was also on Depo for 3 years and have had a lot of issues since I have been off of it, the only thing is I have showed (some) PCOS signs even before my DEPO. I do know that my current doctor is recommending me to go on DEPO to help control my PCOS so I don't think it could be directly the cause of the PCOS, but I would love to see a study on it.... Honestly, you're probably a lot like myself and want to know why this has happened to us...
