pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I am just curious if any of you have/had a successful pregnancy after a LEEP procedure. I know this procedure damages the cervix and the chances of getting &/or staying pregnant can be affected by this. I would love to hear from someone who has had experience with this. Thanks.

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I've never heard of there being a problem in getting or staying pregnant after having a LEEP done! I REALLY hope this is not the case, as I had a LEEP done about 2 years ago - but now we are going thought infertility treatments (for me not my dh). I'm curious too as to what others have to say!!

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I do not have a personal experience with a preganancy after a LEEP, but I do have experiences with the LEEP - I had my second one 3 weeks ago. The LEEP doesn't damage the cervix, it repairs it by removing any pre-cancerous cells that could potentially damage your cervix along iwth the rest of your health. As far as getting pregnant after the LEEP, the best thing to do is wait a while and give your cervix some time to heal and grow back new tissue before you get pg. If you happen to get pg before your cervix heals, your doctor will insert what is called a cerclage, which is a stitch, into your cervix to close it up to ensure a healthy pregnancy. There are MANY women that have had LEEP's and gone on to have successful, healthy babies.

I had a LEEP done last year. I had to go for three repeats paps, one every three months. Well, at my last appt, me and s/o decided to stop using b/c and I was pregnant a month later. It didn't cause me any trouble. Good Luck!!

I had to trouble getting pregnant after my first LEEP. KIMRIK... THe LEEP does damage the cervix. it causes scar tissue which can in itself weaken the cervix.

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

The LEEP does not damage the cervix. If you try to get pg right after the LEEP, your chances of having a successful pregnancy is pretty low. You need to give your cervix enough time to heal itself. A woman's fertility and getting pregnant has nothing to do with the cervix, that has to do with your reproductive organs and whether they are working correctly or not. The only function that a cervix has during pregnancy is keeping the baby in the uterus - and it also serves as the birth canal during labor.

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I had the LEEP done about 8 or 9 years ago. I had great difficulty getting pregnant due to scar tissue that had formed over my cervix. I ended up having an HSG done and that took care of the problem. I am now about 8 wks. pregnant (after 2 years of ttc) and am hoping that I won't have any difficulties. Just don't get discouraged if it takes awhile to conceive. It will work out for the best. :)

I had a leep about 2 years ago. I have had normal paps since then but my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year and I wonder if the Leep could have caused any problems. I am going to see my dr. next week but wonder if anyone can answer my question now.

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I am going to be the black sheep here and say that I had a cervical proceedure done last July and got pregnant immediately afterwards. I believe it actually helped me get pregnant. I had been taking birth control for two years when I conceived. My cervix had precancerous cells growing on it though and the surgery helped clean everything out. I never had a period after having it done since I got pregnant within those next four weeks. I was worried about having an incompetent cervix, which can happen if you have had work done, but I am nine months pregnant now.

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

Hey there....Most women do not have any problems after a Leep. The most common problem is abnormal bleeding from the cervix which can occur even several days after the procedure. Infections are very rare. There is also some theoretical risks of damage to or weakening of the cervix which can result either in fertility problems in the future, or complicate pregnancy. These risks increase with the amount of tissue that needs to be removed in order to cure the dysplasia.

There is a small risk of damage to fertility...depends on the amount of tissue removed, .....hope this helps:)

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

i had the leep procedure done last year and got preggers in november and it has been much different than my 2 previous pregnancies. we had no prob getting pregnant when we tried but then again ive never had a prob getting preggers.
the docs will tell you that there are very minimal risks with that proceedure but to me they are NOT MINIMAL they just say that it might be harder to get preggers and one preggers the leep procedure mught cause you to have an incompentent cervix.
i had mild cramping or uterine irratiability (sp?) and they told me to come in. there was no bleeding or anything but they just wanted to be sure, and when i go in for my monthly checkups they always check my cervix to make sure its not getting shorter.
other than that everything was ok for me but EVERYONE is different. best of luck to you and dont worry too much just make sure that when you do get preggers go to doc appts all the time and if something is worrying you alwayas always call the doc or go to ER or OB Triage. GOOD LUCK

Re: pregnancy after LEEP procedure?

I was curious, did you get pregnant one monthy after the leep or one month after your first follow-up? did your Dr. give you comments as to this being normal?
