Hi everyone...

I am 36 weeks pregnant and went to the doc today... She said that I am about 1 cm dialated. That of course made me very excited - thinking that my baby is coming soon... How long does it actually take from this point on. Does the fact that I have started to dialate mean that my baby will be here early?

Re: Dialation...

Hard to tell when you have it maybe tomorrow or maybe a few more weeks from now. 1 cm dilation can happen early and never progress till you start having full force contractions....good luck!!

Re: Dialation...

I was dilated to 1 cm at 36 weeks, I had lost my mucous plug just before. My doc told me that day "I don't think you'll make it to 40 weeks, but don't hold me to that." I didn't go into labor til 37 1/2 weeks when my water broke. When he checked me at the hospital, I was still only 1 cm, but more effaced. I didn't begin contracting regularly, so they induced me with pitocin to avoid going 24 hours with ruptured membranes.

I have heard of some women being dilated for a month, my neigbor was dilated to a 3 for 3 weeks!! Some go very quickly after early dilation. So you really never know for sure!

Re: Dialation...

I hate to say it but no it doesnt mean you will go soon. Although sometimes it does so I mean its possiable. Me I have been dialated to 3 (i think) for weeks before I went into labor.

Re: Dialation...

i have to agree with mommaboys......
i was dialated 2 1/2 cm & 80%-90% effaced & contracting for 2 weeks before i went into labor this was from 34-36 weeks and then finally my water broke one day before i turned 37 weeks.

so you could walk around for weeks dialated to one cm or your water could break any minuite....really, it is just hard to say, every woman is different when it comes to labor.

but regurdless, you are so close to the end now, enjoy whats left of your pregnancy, because when its over, you'll miss the feeling of growing a baby inside you

Re: Dialation...

Not necessarily. You could stay dialated like that for weeks. If you start having contractions, then that's different.
