    Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Hi Everyone

I had my second scan today - I am 21 weeks.

I found out that I am having a baby boy and am so happy but the nurse found a choroid plexus cyst in his brain.

I have been provided with leaflets about it and I've done some research myself on the web so I know what it is and that it can be a sign of Edward's syndrome or Trisomy 18.

They said that there would be other very obvious signs on the ultrasound if baby did have Edward's Syndrome and as there weren't any other problems they would assume I was fine and not carry out any more tests.

I noticed from looking on the web that a lot of people in the USA seemed to have a more detailed scan carried out to double-check for other abnormalities if a CPC is found. I am in the UK and it looks like this isn't being offered. Does anyone know if I can pay privately in the UK to have this done? They said I could have an amniocentesis but it was strongly advised against.

    Any advice?

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

At my 20 wk ultrasound with DS I was told he had a c.p. cyst on his brain. I am in the US and they did an extremely detailed second ultrasound. In the second one they measure everything to make sure everything is growing at the right rate. DS is perfectly fine. I found out that baby's can have one or more of these and be perfectly fine and most times they mean nothing. If your other blood tests and everything else on the ultrasound is normal I would not worry about it.

    Hi there,

Why did they strongly advise against an amniocentesis? You will know for sure if the baby has Edward's Syndrome. I had a CVS test done which is the same as an amnio but done earlier in pregnancy. My opinion is the benefits outweigh the risk. I know if my OB found that he would strongly advise me to have an amniocentesis done. The risk of miscarriage is about 0.5% and if you go to a maternal fetal specialist their rates are even less. If I were you I would push to have an amnio done. It will give you piece of mind. Here in the states they can do a level 2 ultrasound which is much more detailed however it cannot tell you a definitive diagnosis like an amnio can. An amnio will map out all of the baby's chromosomes so you have a complete picture...it is is almost 100% accurate!!! my test didn't hurt at all and my sisters both had amnio's done and they said they weren't painful either. I had my results within a week and the piece of mind is worth it in my opinion. Good luck whatever you decide to do! I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers!

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

2fast4u - thank you for your reply. Looks like we will be giving birth around about the same time. I have another appointment with my midwife next Monday, I will try to convince her to let me have another ultrasound just to double check for any other markers. I don't know what she will say though. She will probably tell me just to wait and not worry but it's easier said than done.

koukla3 - I think the amnio was not recommended because the doctor thought I would be putting a perfectly healthy pregnancy at risk. I'm glad you got the all clear and are doing fine though. Thanks for those prayers - it means a lot!

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Hi

I thought I would update this post, really just in case anyone is in a similar situation in the future.

I saw my midwife today and asked if I could have another scan (we only get 2 in England) as I wanted them to double check for any other markers which might be associated to Trismoy 18. After my 20 week scan they found a choroid plexus cyst but no other markers. I was still quite concerned as during the scan when she told me about the cyst, I started crying and shaking and I'm not sure how accurate the remainder of the scan was. The pictures she printed off for me were terrible so I was worried she might have missed something.

They would not authorise another scan!

My only option has been to pay privately for the scan which has cost me 200.00. I'm due to have it done this Wednesday evening.

    Fingers crossed for me please.

Victoria, i really wish for you the best. We will keep our fingers cross.
I think the $$ doesn't matter as long as you will get to the bottom of it.

You can prepare for whatever it is. Let's just hope it is a false alarm and everything will work out well.

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

Well I've just got back from having my scan.

The specialist could see a cyst on each side of the brain (my previous scan only showed one on the left side). The one on the left was the largest and measured 1cm.

He went through each body part with me as he scanned it and explained how it would look in a baby with Edwards Syndrome (trismoy 18) and how it looked in my baby boy. He couldn't find any other markers and was happy that baby was fine.

The only lingering worry I have in my mind now is that he said even with just the cysts and no other markers there is still 1 in 200 chance that baby has Edwards Syndrome. There is no more I can do now though, I'm definitely not having the amnio so I will just have to get on with it as best as I can until he's born.

I'm glad I've had the third scan just so I know that there are no other markers. I knew that the cysts wouldn't have gone as it was only last week that I had the second scan done. Apparantly with Edwards syndrome it doesn't make any difference whether they go away or not anyway, the risk is just that they were there in the first place.

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Victoria,
So what this means is that they are not sure if the cyst has impacted the baby? That means there is a high % he will be okay?

These Drs sometime get me dizzy, is there a problem or there isn't?

I was at my genetic counselor yesterday and we went over the cyst problems and other chromosome diseases. I will have a CVS done tomorrow to see how is the baby. I am really scared because I am 40 and so is my DH. There are also "taras" in my family because back then they used to get married with first cousins to keep the "pure" whatever ... go figure ! There seems to be a test for everything nowdays.

Anyway, please let us know how everything turns out to be.

Good luck and keep praying. I have heard or other similar stories, they keep having faith and at the end everything is okay.

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Victoria,
At my 18-20 wk can they found a bright spot on our sons' heart. They called me 4 days later and told me that the spot could mean that our son has Down's Syndrome or Trisomy 21. They told us that there are 15 markers for this and that he only had one. I opted to get the 2nd u/s with the genetic counselor, and when I did she confirmed that he only had one marker. They told me not to worry and to enjoy the rest of my pg. They said I could have the amnio and triple screen done, bit that was my option b/c she said that no more further testing was needed. I agree with no amnio, b/c they told me that at this stage there was a 1/40 chance that I would lose the baby if I had it done. They told me that they couldn't totally rule D/S out, but they said the odds are in our favor. So, I am in the same boat as you are. I try not to think about it, but it is always in the back of my head. I wish nothing but the best of luck to you and your little one and I hope everything is okay! Take care and just relax now!

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Thank you for your replies.

I am going to try and put this out of my mind for now.

Hopefully I will be updating this post around the 9th February with news of my healthy baby boy.

Best wishes for the rest of you that your little ones are fine too.

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Hi Victoria,
I am Stephanie. Today we had our 20 week ultrasound and I was told our baby also has a choroid plexus cyst. I have decided to not have the next level 2 ultrasound until I am at least 28 weeks to see if it resolves. These tests are not accurate at all---especially with just one "soft" marker. I also am not going to risk an amnio. We would NOT terminate in any regard. I figure that everything will be as it should. In the meantime I am going to be praying and counting the positives I am experiencing pregnant.

Keep me posted! I am due March 15, 2006.

    Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst

    Hi Stephanie

Let me know what happens at your next ultrasound.

From other information I have read and advice from people on other boards I am confident that my doctor's estimate of 1/200 risk of Edwards Syndrome with only the cysts as a soft marker was looking on the bleak side. Choroid Plexus cysts seem to be much more common now with advances in how much the ultrasound machines can see and doctors are starting to think that they are just part of baby's normal devlopment.

I am still hopeful that my little one will be fine and will update you when I know more.

    Victoria
