Braxton Hicks?

Can someone tell me what they feel like? I had to have a stress test and the nurse told me I was having them and asked me if I could feel them at all. I couldn't. The other night I had a really bad cramp down low (lower than a menstrual cramp) and lasted about 30 seconds. I almost doubled-over it was so bad. My aunt thinks it was a Braxton Hicks contraction but it doesn't seem like I should be feeling them that low down.
Oh, and I'm 36 weeks btw.

Re: Braxton Hicks?

They can be anywhere and sometimes feel like labor, but they are more sporatic and go away. Labor may start out sporatic but the contractions get closer together and more intense and certainly don't go away. You could have had a cramp or B-H contractions. You'll know when it's the real deal.

Re: Braxton Hicks?

Ament, I've been having Braxton Hicks since about 15 weeks. At first, they were hard to notice 'cause my uterus was so small, but it was just tightening. I'm 35 weeks 4 days and they can get very uncomfortable. I have a ton of them, so I'm kinda jealous that you haven't even had any. I've read that they aren't supposed to hurt, but they can get so uncomfortable that they do hurt 'cause everything (especially my ribs and bladder) gets smashed in there. I ended up in the hospital last Saturday with low cramps and sharp pains, turned out I was having contractions and had to have 3 shots to stop them. So it very well could have been a real contraction that you were having, not a Braxton Hicks because they don't hurt that bad. Nothing to really worry about though, unless they become regular. At this point your uterus is just preparing itself.

Re: Braxton Hicks?

i never had braxton hicks contractions but i read ALOT about them compared to the real thing on the net...and from my labor experience my contractions started out every 2-3 minutes hurt, but was bearable but it definitely got WAY more intense as time went contractions arent regular and dont get more intense...if its early labor, i think the only way you would be able to tell the difference if its bh or the real ones is by timing them.

Re: Braxton Hicks?

I'm bumping this up to try and get more responses as I've been having alot of what I "think" are bh, but not quite sure. Any details of what a bh contraction feels like would be great!

Re: Braxton Hicks?

For me, the BH contractions are extreme tightening of the uterus. My abdomen gets tighter and tighter and then after a minute or so, relaxes again. They are very similar to early labor, but rarely get more intense as time goes on (true labor will intensify). I have had BH in fairly regular intervals, but not usually for more than an hour or two and they tend to go away if I take a warm bath or shower. The real thing doesn't go away for anything! Hope this helps somewhat.

I am the queen of BH contractions! I have had them since about 6 months, but these last few weeks (I'm 33 weeks right now) have become intense. Okay, sometimes they're painful like theres a feeling of sort of period type cramping down low and then your whole stomach/uterus becomes tight and SUPER hard like a rock. You would be able to feel it if you touched it, it's extremely hard. Then it softens up after a minute or so. So basically it feels like a big but for the most part painless CHARLIE horse in your entire stomach, usually concentrated more so in one place, like it's tight everywhere, but where I mostly feel it is the center around my belly button. Sometimes I won't realize I'm having one I'll think the baby is doing something weird and then I'll touch my stomach and realize, oh yeah... two days ago I had probably 30 throughout the day, but my midwife says until they become painful, regular or there is fluid, not to worry.
Hope that helps some, let me know if you still need more info.
