    Overweight Women Had a Cesarean?

    Hi Everyone

I may have to have a cesarean and am extremely overweight, although I have lost a lot of weight.

I had a 27 hour labour with a vacuum delivery last birth and may have to go a cesarean this time around.

I was just wanting to know whether any other very overweight women have had a cesarean delivery and whether there were any complications with wound heal or anything else.

I have watched dvds on this and spoken to the specialist in great length but just wanted to hear any real life stories.

    It's much appreciated. Thanks.

I had difficulties pushing DD out too. However, got lucky with the vacuum and such (didn't need it). My SIL had to have c-section b/c her baby was 11lbs. and 10 oz. I don't think a small person could have deliverd that first time!! LOL! My SIL is a pretty big girl and she said she healed fine and that she got to nurse right away. I fear a c-section this time (don't know why). If you had your last baby "natural" or vaginal, you should be able to this time. You have already cleared a "path" for this one! It took 2 1/2 hours of pushing for my DD. She had a 14 1/2 in. head but was tiny length wise. I was told by the delivering doc that I may have to push only about 1/2 hour this time (which would be heaven!). So, don't worry. If you have to have a section, they are pretty safe nowadays and the docs seem to be good with all sizes of women. I will pray that you have a natural delivery...you may just be surprised with how your body will stretch for another one! Good luck!

Re: Overweight Women Had a Cesarean?

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum too, just joined today! Yikes, c-sections scare me! I had an emergency c-section with my first and you will need all the support you can get, it is very difficult to do everyday tasks like walking up stairs or taking a shower. If you have one try not to take on too much and try to keep your spirits up as it will get easier. To be perfectly honest I found it very tramatizing myself, I was completely out of it in the hospital, I was hallucinating and having nightmares, not sleeping etc. and I couldnt cope for 3-4 months at home. I develped post-tramatic stress disorder. That was just me...I know of ladies who never had any problems with the c-secion and were up and about in no time (lucky ladies!) ...on a better note my cousin was very heavy and recently had a planned c-section and had no problems at all with the scar healing, however she did need help to keep the incision area clean, her tummy was about 50 pounds dead weight and she needed her mom to lift her tummy up and hold it for her clean it well. She said she was slightly tramatized after as well because of the surgery, she told me it was how dependent on others you are that surprized her. Whatever happens good luck to you on your new arrival, pregnancy really is a special time, enjoy it! I have a 5 month old baby boy and a 5 yr old boy. Kind regards

Hey! I am around 270ish (big "ish", lol) and the only problem that I had with my C-section (unplanned after 29 hours of labor) that I know to be due to my weight is that because of the way that my belly sat after she was out the top part of my incision has a little "lip" that the doctor wasn't happy with. But it is pretty minor and it really is amazing how small the scar is now.

I had two c-sections while weighing 300+ pounds. I didn't have any problems either time. Make sure you take it easy afterwards, do what the doc says and you should be fine.

Re: Overweight Women Had a Cesarean?

I have had two csections and no problems. The first one was an emergency csection and i had staples to close the incision. The second was a planned csection and i had sutchures to close the incision. I had no problems healing and felt that i was up and around faster the second time. I did get minor redness with the staples that i used a 50/50 peroxide and water rinse on. I didn't think that the csection was as bad as I would have imagined and I would do another one if i were going to have more children. (but we are done with that lol) Good luck. Also I just wanted to say that by the time you are ready to have that baby and especially if you labor prior to a csection. You are not going to care how they get the baby out! lol

I have not had a C-section. This is my first baby. But the Dr. told me just this morning ( I am 16 wks. 2 days) that statistics show that women my age (41) have a 50% chance of having a C-section. I am also overweight (274) right now. However I'm not scared. We are planning a reg. birth unless there are complications and then I told him we will do whatever is best for the baby!

Re: Overweight Women Had a Cesarean?

I have a question...how much "overweight" are we talking??? I have never heard this before!?!? I'm suddenly quite nervous! I was about 15-20 pounds overweight when I conceived and I've gained about 17 pounds during the pregnancy (I'm a few days shy of 27 weeks). Did your doctor's mention this to you? Or is it not mentioend until the delivery room???

    Just curious!

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Re: Overweight Women Had a Cesarean?

Well, with my first baby I weighed 275 at delivery. No cesarean, no epidural but did have an episiotomy. I only had around 4 hours of labor and she pushed right out! I am now 7 months into my second pregancy and I am planning for a natural delivery. However, I'm now 10 years older (37) but I am hoping things go just as smooth....So overweight ladies don't give up plan (if you can) for a natural childbirth.
