    Re: Burning mouth syndrome

tina...yes i have BMS and i am dying to talk to someone else who has it.Ive had it for approx 4 years.it began with severe tooth pain ,that traveled to different areas of my mouth,Then the burning began. This was constant and horrible for the first year.after the first year or so, the problem seemed to lessen and would come and go, but stress and illness would def make it worse.another symptom i have is numbness of the lips and the"muzzle"of my face. I also have tinnitus that began at approx the same time and ive always wondered if the two ...BMS and tinnitus are somehow related.
    looking forward to your response.

    Re: Burning mouth syndrome

I have been diagnosed with Burning Mouth Syndrome with a secondary diagnosis of facial neuralgia. It was caused by a horrible dental procedure (and an incompetent dentist) that I had to have redone. I went from dr. to dr. and dentist to periodontist, to the emergency room, and back to dr. to dr. trying to get a diagnosis. Most of them kept looking at me like they really didn't believe I was actually having these problems. I finally was referred to a neurologist that saved me.

I had severe scalding in my mouth, especially when I spoke, and the pain started at the top of my front teeth and spread outward in a "V" shape up my face to the top of my forehead.

I am on 3 different medications now and the symptoms are starting to come under control. The burning, or scalding, has lessened and as long as I take my medications everyday I can keep the pain mostly under control.

I understand that it takes an average of 6-7 years for the treatments to finally work and that 90% of people with BMS can be cured.

I suffered for 8 months until I found this wonderful dr/neurologist who was able to help me. He has helped me, not only physically with the medication, but emotionally with encouragement and care. It was such a relief to find him. I hope you are able to get your condition under control soon.

    My prayers are with you,

    Camchase

    Hi Camchase,
I read your post and I wonder if you burn anywhere else like I burn? MY face, legs and held burn continually and i suffer from panic disorder. When cool air hits me, it is aweful. So far, no Dr. has helped. When I take medication for the panic, ex. lexapro, xanax etc, the burning intensifies. This is driving me nuts. Oh yeah, all of this started after a bad trip to the dentist. The nut tried to pull a tooth that wasn't numb, I ended up at an oral sugeon and look as if I had been beaten up for about 3 weeks.

Saddy2, I can sympathize with your problems of finding a doctor who can treat you properly. It took me a long time to find one who could. All I can tell you is to keep trying different dr.s until you find the right one.

I'm no dr., certainly, but it sounds to me like it has to do with your nervous system. Have you seen a neurologist? Try several until you get it right.

No, I only have the burning in my mouth and throat, thank goodness. I can't imagine having this all over. I take 3 medications, including one for epilepsy, even though I don't have it. My dr. says it calms the nerves. And then I take 2 different pain medications. He has had to up the dosage a couple times to get the proper amounts to help. It is better but not gone yet so I'm expecting him to up them some more.

I hope you get some help soon. My prayers are with you,

    Camchase
