Question Does Any Kind Of Surgery Make Rsd Spread?????

    Hi Everyone!
    I Got A Question??
I Have Rsd, Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Depression, Anxiety, Etc......
I Remember Reading That Surgeries Can Cause Rsd To Spread, I Have Rsd In Both My Hands And Both My Feet, I Had A Hysterectomy Done In 2000 And Ovaries Removed In 2002 Due To Endometreosis, Adhesions And Scar Tissue.........well That Pain Is Back And The Doctor Thinks It's The Endo Back Attacking My Intestines And Colon And Is Sending Me To A Surgeon To See If I Need The Laprascopy Done To See If Anything Needs To Be Removed
My Question Is, If Things Have To Be Burnt Or Cut Out Or Anything, Will This Affect My Rsd????????
    Thanks In Advance

    Sylvia

    Hi Sylvia,
sorry to hear you have so many things wrong. I have read & my 1 ortho doctor has told me that surgery in the site of the rsd can make it worse, but I haven't heard or read anything about surgery in another site. Maybe someone else on the board knows. I hope you don't need the surgery. I didn't know endo could attack the intestines & colon. I sure hope you're okay. Is that painful also? How are your hands & feet doing?
    Best wishes,
    Linda

    Hi,

My understanding is that any surgery MAY cause the RSD to spread or worsen. This doesn't mean that it will. Sometimes, you just have to take the risk. Sometimes, you don't have a choice. Since my RSD diagnosis, I've had many surgeries. Some have made the RSD worsen, some haven't. For example, a few years ago, I had a tonsillectomy. The RSD didn't go there or worsen although for a while, I thought it might have because my throat was hurting for so long. Now, everything is fine with that. My advice would be to do what you have to do for your health and deal with possibilities later. You might not even have to deal with the RSD spreading or worsening. Sometimes, you have no choice but to do the surgery. Good luck.

    Sharon

    Sylvia,
From what I've been told from several specialists is that there is no 100%guarantee that any new trauma introduced to your body won't cause the RSD to spread or worsen. The best prevention is to notify the doctor performing the surgery and ask that they perform a nerve block prior to the general anaesthetic. This helps prevent the nerve impulses from traveling to the spinal cord and being sent elsewhere. However, this may only be the case with surgeries on the limbs. I"m not sure about internal organs. Sounds like you have alot to deal with. My thoughts are with you. Cheryl

    Thanks For The Replies
Yes The Endo Does Hurt. It Even Burns, Feels Like Sharp Knifes, I Am On So Many Meds And Even The Oxy Won't Touch The Endo
I Was Just So Worried Because The Iv Needles From The Blocks Caused The Rsd To Spread To My Right Hand And I'm Not Sure What Caused It To Go To My Feet
Either Way, I'll Have To Take The Chance, B/c I've Got To Get This Problem Taken Care Of And Just Hope For The Best
    Thanks

    Goodmorning,

I also have severe Endo, I have had to have 6 laparoscopies and a laparotomy in the past 3 yrs. They wont do a hyst on me bc i am only 25 but understand the pain you are in. I am now on the depo provera shot and taking 2 birth controll pills a day to help the pain and the spread of the endo. you are right about the endo pain and the rsd pain being similar, and recently i really dont know if the RSD has spread to my abd. or its just my endo acting up?

But to answer your question, I am also in the understanding that any surgery can trigger RSD. I mean that if you already have RSD and you need to have surgery, then it might spread to the incision site and then go from there. I havent had any more GYN surg since i had RSD bc of this , and my doc says ineed to ahve it or else my fertility will be in question, but i dont want to haev the RSD spread.. He thinks its just the massive adhesions that i have causing the probs but the endo is visible and i have chronic cysts on my ovaries too..soo?? I would ask you PM doc if surg will worsen your RSD?? I Hoped I helped a little..
