    Blocks not working

    [/FONT]

Hello everyone,Sorry I`ve been away but I have had many painful days.Yes even on Christmas day. Not sure how many blocks I`ve had maybe 7, but on my last one I got my block at 10:30 and by 5:00 the pain was back. It`s now 5:30 in the morning and I can`t sleep, so I got up took a pain pill and here I am. Not sure what to do I can`t go on like this. I told my Pain doc about it and he told me every block is diffence. It`s not getting any better my arm feels like it going to fall off.

If the blocks are not working, then why do you continue to subject yourself to them?

    More invasion = More risk.

Clearly, many on this list have had numerous blocks. They obviously of questionable benefit.

I refuse to have any. In fact, I refuse to have American Medicine treat my condition. It is clearly in the dark on this matter.

I have nothing to lose in trying something else.

    Sam.

    Re: Blocks not working

    Hi Pam,
I been wondering what happened to you. I am sorry your not having more success with the blocks. When is your next one? I've had 6 and get the next one on New Year's eve. They were helping me and I was feeling close to normal until I had my flare-up on Christmas. Just did too much and as my husband said, got off my schedule. When I checked my PT schedule (for my home exercises) I noticed I had not done enough on Christmas. I also remembered today that I had not taken my celebrex for days. Maybe it's the combination of meds, PT & the blocks that were helping me. I have taken my Neurontin, Lortab, Amitriptyline & Clonidine as scheduled. I'm also taking vitamins and 100mg of grape seed extract. I may have missed some of those over the Christmas rush. What meds are you taking? I also have a TENS unit that I've used an awful lot the past two days for the pain. My pain doc doesn't want to continue with the blocks if they are not helping. They do help for several days then the pain starts creeping back. I'm wondering that if I got them closer together maybe they would have a cumulative effect. I will ask him about that. Some of my blocks have been better than others. I guess it depends on how much of the marcaine gets where it's supposed to go. Even with the x-ray (fluroscope?) showing the right position I've had different responses. They have all helped just some more than others.
I know what you mean about it feeling like your arm is falling off. I felt that way the day after Christmas. My thumb felt like someone was cutting the bone with a knife & the top of my hand was burning. I felt like I couldn't go on. It's tough. I don't know what to tell you. I just hope you get some relief soon.
I'm glad you checked in, I was worried about you.
    Keep the faith!
    Hugs & prayers,
    Linda

    Hi Linda,
It`s been a long time, I`m not sure what the next step is going to be. What I do no is that the [ain doc is trying to get me in with a PT with knows about RSD we hope that happen the frist of the year. The meds I`m taking now are Vicodin, Neurontin,Amitriptylineand the DR what`s me to start withLexapto.
Yesterday I had another painful day I was ready for the ER.But on the news they talked about the hospitals sending people away because of the flu. So I just kept taking my Vicodin.Today it`s alittle better.
The last two blocks I`ve gotten didn`t work that well at all.I just don`t know what to do.I go back on Jan 7 so I and to wait and see.Are you taking anything for depression???Also did you stop smoking or start up again???

    Have a great day

    Re: Blocks not working

    Hi Pam,
Great to hear from you. I'm glad you are feeling better today. I bet that weather there is having a nasty effect on you too. I think the rain & cold here contributed to my flare-up & it's nowhere near the snow & cold you have. I know what you mean about the ER. My husband asked if I wanted to go Christmas evening & the day after. Those morphine shots really help for several hours, but now that I know what I have, I just took my meds & sucked it in. I don't want to hang around the ER either with all this flu going around. If it gets really, really bad go to the ER & ask for a morphine shot. I hope you get to a good PT soon. I get to see mine today. I'm anxious to see what she has to say about my flare-up. She won't be happy when she sees my hand.
I don't know what lexapto is. What's it for? I'm not taking anything for the depression. The amitriptyline is supposed to help but the low dose I'm on is not enough for that. I tried trazadone for 2 days & had nightmares. I guess I need to go back to a psychiatrist to get some meds. I'm really depressed now, too. You might want to ask your doc for norco or lortab instead of vicoden - they're the same pain med with less aspirin stuff. My stomach handles them better. You might even want to ask for something stronger for those really bad days. I asked my doc but he didn't want to change my meds while I'm getting blocks - and I didn't need anything stronger until the last few days. I was taking a lot less lortab. Hoping to get off them. Now,I am really bummed!
I'm going to get a block tomorrow (Happy New Year!) & see a rsd specialist on Jan 6. I've gotten several referrals for him so I hope it's worth my trip to San Diego. I've been so stressed & depressed that I am smoking some. How about you? I hope you are having better luck with this addiction than me. It came to a point where I would either smoke or take too many pills. The smoking does calm me down.
Keep me posted, I worry about you. I called the social security office yesterday to get an appt. to sign up for disability. I tried working for my son-in-law for a couple of weeks. The first week was okay, then I started getting more & more pain. Missed more than I was there. I think he fired me yesterday when he called & said he thought I would be there & wants to settle up. And this was an EASY job! Nothing like the accounting or real estate that I used to do 7 days a week. Anyways, the SS person I talked to was real nice & she got a 'feeling' about me & that I would have a really good 2004. She said that she never gets 'feelings'. I thanked her for the encouragement. I hope you have a really good 2004.
    Have a nice day,
    Linda

    Re: Blocks not working

    Linda,
I sign up for Social Security back in Oct. They called yesterday to get a updated on my meds. They also wanted so see if I would go to one of thier doctor for a exam, if my doctors don`t repond back. I told them that I would. When do you go for your appointment??

I plan on asking my doctor about lortab, after reading the threads on vicoden. It`s not for me I only take it when it really bad. (Like yesterday)

On smoking I quit for one day that all. I try but It`s so hard to do along with everything else. My doctor will not be happy. I mean he got in my face and said you have to quit.If I told him that it clam me down, I think I might be better off walking out the door.

Linda Good luck on your block tomorrow

    Pam

I'm sorry the blocks aren't working for you...my husband Joey had a number of weekly blocks, first sympathetic lumbar blocks, then epidural Clonidine blocks which REALLY worked great at first, pain free for the whole week in between blocks....then last time the Dr switched him to something that's supposed to be a 'new' procedure, as the Clonidine was supposed to be, and it was a Lidocaine IV infusion through his arm. (His RSD is in his left ankle) This worked great for almost 2 wks, but the next one wasn't scheduled for 5 wks away....so when the pain started back, he tried to get it moved up sooner and they could only shorten it by one week, which will come on Monday, finally. Don't know what he'll get at this appointment.

    Good Luck,

    ~Ange~

    Re: Blocks not working

    Hi guys!
I am also in the process of getting a series of blocks. I started getting SGB's for my right arm/hand in late June 03. I have had 8 so far, and my 9th is scheduled for this Tues, the 6th. All blocks have provided pain reduction (usually drops approx 4 pain level points from 7/8 to approx 4). I have had as litttle as 20 minutes pain reduction to a max of 15 days. I average 10 days with moderate relief, but still must take my vicodin regularly to maintain.
My doc said I could go every two weeks, so I don't have to suffer at an "8" for a week and a half between blocks. But, problem is, I only have one person who can drive me and she can only take one day off a month to do it. So I usually have about 10-12 days pain reduction, then suffer horribly for two weeks until my next block. How do you guys find someone to drive you to your appt every few weeks? Everyone I know works full-time and can't get time off to drive me to my block.

I find the blocks to be bittersweet. I'm so grateful for the days of pain reduction I get, but its a nightmare when the block "wears off" and next round of unbearable suffering begins. I just try to keep the faith and hope that one of these blocks will start me into remission.

Keep the faith and hope for the best, Pam!

I had several blocks for my carpal tunnel(Both hands) Two near wrists, two near elbows, and 2-3 near neck. Last one lasted a glorious 10 hours then stopped. Dr after that stopped seeing me I guess I wasn't one of her successes.

Sam, may I suggest that since your not in pain any longer and you like to dance Naked around a fire. Go elsewhere, some of us are getting tired of arguing with you. Your point has been posted, ours has been posted. Now lets brake away nice and easy. You cured your RSD, and since we won't take your advice and follow your treatment we won't be cured.

    Good idea, stickgirl!

I'm "happy" for Sam that he has such minor pain now. Now maybe he won't have a need for this board.

    Hi Pam,
Just wanted to let you know, I think you are talking about lexapro which is an
antidepressant on the order of celexa----It's not in the same category as
elavil--- A suggestion---Don't take it at night--It may keep you up. It's a good drug and should not put pounds on you like elavil or the anti seizure drug
neuronton. Takes about 3 weeks to kick in.

A PT that knows about rsd/crps can make all th difference so make sure because if they don't they can actually do more harm than good. ---The massage, the wrapping, and the quality of exercises all help to keep movement.
let us know how you do. By the way I got a PT specifically for my hand
and he mad it possible for me to wrap it myself with the use off a self adhering gauze called cobam which I use on my fingers and thumb and ace bandages
for the rest of the arm 45min twice a day to cut down on swelling --any more
and you risk the fingers stiffening.----Wishing you much less pain- Susie L
