| How bad is a nerve study?
Will it be uncomfortable or will I be in excrutiating pain.
Frankly, I'm thinking of cancelling! I have RSD in my right hand and don't feel like a painful experience in my left right now.
Anyone know?

I have had 2 Nerve Conduction Studies. They are uncomfortable, but not excrutiating. And there is no lingering effects.

Thanks! That makes me feel better....So many people have told me it is the worst pain ever and I was ready to cancel....
...but then again, I should know better----some people say that mammograms are the "worst pain ever!" |

I agree with the posts before me. Definitely uncomfortable, but not unbearable. Good luck if you decide to go.

If you are talking about a nerve conduction study it was uncomfortable, but not really painful. It also did not reveal anything in regards to my RSD because the doctor did it incorrectly. My pain was associated with sitting down back then and he did the study lying down.

They can be very uncomfortable but usually not to bad. Things like that it all kind of depends on your personal pain tolerance. I've had it done several times and it doesn't feel great but it's not the worst thing ever either.
I hope that it went okay for you and you were able to get good results.
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

I had them years ago for my back and remember it being uncomfortable. Recently had it done again for arm, wrist and neck and it was horrible. It was not the worst pain ever though and I was already in a flare. I also was not expecting the shock part of it. I only remembered the needles. But the way I looked at it was we needed answers so I could get better and if doing the test would help find answers than I needed to get through it. I took pain meds prior to the tests.
Like the others mentioned, the pain does not last. I wouldn't cancel. It may give you answers that could lead to permanent relief. Good luck!

Deanne | My nerve study years ago was mildly uncomfortable but I am glad I had
it done at the time. The discomfort was not untolerable during the testing.

Janaly,
Mine were uncomfortable, not enough to stop but after having the rsd really set in after a couple years they did get worse. Not really the test just it's self but the way I felt afterwards. Most of the time in the recent years/months it can sometimes cause me to flare up for the rest of the day. Be really weak and have spasms. I haven't had one done for about 6 or 8 months but my last one caused such a flare up that I didn't walk for two days. I know everyone acts differently with these and hope and pray that it's not that bad for anyone. We all deal with enough pain.
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

Deanne | It's cold here today Harmony....and I can't wait for summer to come!
I sure do understand how flair ups can occur and one can feel declined
for a while after the nerve tests. You are so right in that we all deal
with enough pain as it is. That is what I so value this forum and all
the many avenues to share and express. I am so happy to be a member
here now.
Warmly,
Janaly

Janaly,
I'm glad that you are enjoying your self here. This is a wonderful place and it's because of the wonderful open people that are on here.
Flare ups are no fun and even though I hate the pain I know how important it can be to have tests done, even if they hurt. You can't move forward without knowing your limits. Most of the time anymore my docs don't touch me. I'm almost done with my case. Hopefully I will be able to get some epi-blocks and aggressive therapy before then. Even though the therapy can hurt I know that after some time it can help too. I'm just going to keep my eyes at the end of the tunnel and try to get through it. Hopefully the ending eval and tests won't flare me up to bad. That's my biggest stress. It's so much work when you are going to have a flare up after tests and know that you have to get help from people and are going to be down for a couple days if not longer. Thank god for good friends and a very understanding and sympathetic husband.
Hope all is well on your end. Sorry it took me so long to reply, but the weather has really been laying me out. Hopefully summer will be here soon for everyone
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne
