Question What Does RSD Feel Like?

Hello. Can any one describe the pain, the physical characteristics of RSD. I had Carpal unnel Surgery in Dec 02 on my right wrist and hand and I have been left paralized with no feeling (numbness)in my index finger and thumb. The are both stiff and I can't bend either one. What I feel is like a burning, stabbing, salt in wound, itchy but can't scratch feeling. My thumb and index finger looks like a snausage (dog treats), it is shiney and some of the selling has gone down, but the stiffness remains. Please tell me anything about this condition. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, rsd is very nasty with the shiny skin and other symtoms it sounds like you have rsd to me. what is your dr. saying about these symtoms. If your fingers are stiff, has he started you in pt?. My rsd in my hand started with the shiny skin and swelling and sever stiffness then started turning ice cold and purple and burns like h---.

Not everyone with rsd has the same signs and symtoms. Everyone is different. Rsd effects everyone differently.

You need to go to a good dr. who is educated in rsd so if this is rsd you can start treatment as soon as possible.

Everyone on this forum is great and well educated in rsd because we live with it everyday. We will try and answer any question you might have. We are all here for each other on good days and bad.

    You take care

Hi Cattys, Thanks for your timely response. I am a Gulf war VET and I go the VA Hospital. I had CTS on 5 Dec and I knew the moment the regiional block from surgery subsided, that something was wrong because I had the left had done 2 months earlier, so I had something to compare it with. My orthopedic surgeon released me and sent me to a neurologist and all my medical records say form Ortho is: "Possible post OP RSD", and the neorologist medical report says: "Apparent RSD" That really doesn't tell me anything, does it? I was in PT, but they released me when I brought a report from a private pract to have the Nerve conduction test. The results were abnormal with severe acute ongoing denervation with minimal evidence of reinervation. I was on nuerontin for 6 weeks with no help, then Keppra and this is not working and it has been 6 weeks also, so I am calling my doctor today and ask if I can stop taking the Keppra because the fear of side effect without the benefit of the medication working for me. Thanks again and be blessed and thank you for your information. Oh! I do have an appointment with a fellowship hand surgeon the enod of May in St. Paul MN. Be blessed,
    Crystal.

In a few simple words, RSD feels like living in hell.

    Hi Crystal,
you describe what many people experience in CRPS(RSD).
Most doctors(I say this from experience) write 'possible' or a form such as that due to there always being a margine of error. Because CRPS has no test to prove it is present, it could be something. But what has these exact same symptoms?
Your symptoms have all the classical trade marks of CRPS.

I do hope your doctor is able to get you in asap for blocks. The blocks are also one form of test used to diagnose as well.

    Good luck

Hi Shaman, for your helpful information about this condition, on thing is happening that id did not mention earlier, although I have no feeling in some places, other places I though very lightly on my thumb and index finger hurts so bad, just the a light touch. Yes, I am going to a hand specialist who is familiar with RDS. Again thanks and have a Blessed day!

One note on the numbness: CRPS does not cause paralysis. There have been people that have numb areas and so on but not where the limb/finger for example is total unresponsive.

Maybe others have experiences with this numbness symptom and a post specific to this may get you some more feedback
